Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Wedding Veil

The next morning, the Vale mansion looked exactly the same.

That was what made it terrifying.

The marble floors were still polished.
The massive chandeliers still illuminated the halls.
The servants still moved quietly through the rooms, pretending they did not feel the storm building inside the walls.

But Dominic Vale knew the truth.

A house did not become dangerous because of the weapons hidden inside it.

A house became dangerous when the people living inside it started lying.

He stood alone in his office, staring at the security footage again.

Frame by frame.

Minute by minute.

He watched Claire Bennett walk into the wine cellar.

He watched Nathan follow her.

He watched the two people closest to him discuss Mia Carter’s disappearance like they were discussing a business transaction.

Dominic had watched the video twelve times.

And every single time, the same question burned inside him.

Why?

Why Mia?

Why now?

Why inside his own home?

The answer was somewhere between the lies.

And Dominic Vale had spent his entire life finding the truth buried underneath lies.

A knock came at the door.

“Come in.”

Marcus entered.

The guard looked different.

More serious.

“Boss.”

Dominic turned away from the screen.

“Report.”

“We found Claire.”

“Where?”

“At her apartment downtown.”

Dominic narrowed his eyes.

“Alone?”

Marcus hesitated.

“No.”

That single word changed the atmosphere.

“Who was with her?”

Marcus placed a folder on the desk.

“Someone we didn’t expect.”

Dominic opened it.

Inside were photographs.

The first one showed Claire leaving a luxury apartment building.

The second showed her entering a private restaurant.

The third showed her sitting across from an older man.

Dominic’s expression darkened.

He knew that face.

Everyone in his world knew that face.

Victor Bennett.

Claire’s father.

A businessman who had built his fortune through questionable deals and powerful connections.

Dominic flipped through the remaining photos.

“There’s more.”

Marcus nodded.

“Victor met with Nathan three times in the last month.”

Dominic looked up.

“Why didn’t I know?”

Marcus lowered his head.

“Because they covered their tracks.”

A long silence followed.

Then Dominic smiled slightly.

Not a happy smile.

A dangerous one.

“They were planning this for a long time.”

“Yes.”

Dominic closed the folder.

“Where is Claire now?”

“Still at her apartment.”

“Good.”

Marcus looked surprised.

“You’re not bringing her here?”

“No.”

Dominic walked toward the window.

“I want her to believe she’s safe.”

Marcus understood immediately.

Dominic was not chasing her.

He was hunting her.

And hunters never rushed toward prey.

They waited.

Across the city, Claire Bennett stood in front of a mirror.

She looked perfect.

That was always her talent.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

The kind of smile that convinced people she was incapable of doing anything cruel.

She adjusted the diamond necklace around her neck.

The necklace Dominic gave her six months ago.

A symbol of love.

A symbol of trust.

A symbol of everything she had destroyed.

Her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Nathan.

She answered immediately.

“Is it done?”

Nathan’s voice was quiet.

“Not exactly.”

Claire froze.

“What do you mean?”

“Mia survived.”

The room became silent.

Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“She survived?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Nathan looked through the office window of his temporary location.

“I don’t know.”

Claire paced across the room.

“That changes everything.”

“No.”

Nathan’s voice became colder.

“It changes nothing.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Claire stopped.

Nathan continued.

“Dominic doesn’t know the full truth yet.”

“He found the camera.”

Silence.

For the first time, Nathan had no immediate answer.

Claire whispered:

“What?”

“He saw us.”

Her face went pale.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

The perfect mask disappeared.

For a moment, Claire was no longer the elegant woman preparing for a billionaire wedding.

She was simply a frightened person who realized the game had changed.

“We need to leave.”

“No.”

Nathan’s answer was immediate.

“You don’t run.”

“Why not?”

“Because Dominic expects fear.”

Claire looked around.

“What do you suggest?”

Nathan lowered his voice.

“We continue.”

She stared.

“Continue?”

“Yes.”

“That’s insane.”

“No.”

Nathan’s tone became firm.

“It’s the only way.”

Claire sat down slowly.

“How?”

“You go back.”

“To the mansion?”

“Yes.”

She laughed nervously.

“You want me to walk back into Dominic’s house after he knows?”

“He doesn’t know everything.”

“What if he asks?”

“Cry.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

Nathan sighed.

“You’re good at pretending.”

The words sounded like an insult.

But Claire ignored it.

“What’s the plan?”

Nathan looked at the city below.

“Make Dominic believe you are another victim.”

A slow smile appeared on Claire’s face.

The mask returned.

That afternoon, Claire arrived at the Vale mansion.

Every guard watched her.

Every camera followed her.

But nobody stopped her.

Because Dominic ordered them not to.

She walked through the front doors wearing a white coat and a worried expression.

“Dominic?”

Her voice carried through the hallway.

No answer.

She continued.

“I heard about Mia.”

Still nothing.

Then Dominic appeared at the top of the staircase.

The same place where Harper had grabbed his sleeve days earlier.

Claire looked up at him.

For a second, she saw something she had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Nothing.

Dominic’s face was empty.

And that frightened her more.

“Dominic…”

She walked closer.

“I was so worried.”

He looked at her.

“Were you?”

Claire stopped.

A small crack appeared.

Then she quickly recovered.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic slowly walked down the stairs.

“You tell me.”

“I don’t understand.”

“That’s the problem.”

He reached the bottom.

They stood only a few feet apart.

The woman he planned to marry.

The woman who had been part of his family.

The woman who had smiled beside him in photographs.

“I heard Mia was found.”

Claire placed a hand over her chest.

“Thank God.”

Dominic watched carefully.

“You seem relieved.”

“Of course I am.”

“Why?”

Claire blinked.

“Because she’s alive.”

Dominic studied her reaction.

A normal person would look terrified.

A normal person would ask questions.

A normal person would demand to know who did this.

But Claire’s first instinct was different.

She was controlling the conversation.

“How is she?”

Dominic answered.

“She’s alive.”

“That’s good.”

“She asked about Harper first.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“Mia was always a good mother.”

Dominic’s eyes sharpened.

“You knew she was trapped.”

Claire froze.

Only for a second.

But he saw it.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Her voice became softer.

“Dominic, are you accusing me?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I’m giving you a chance.”

“A chance for what?”

“To tell me the truth.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

Perfect timing.

Perfect emotion.

Perfect performance.

“You think I would hurt Mia?”

Dominic said nothing.

She continued.

“I loved Harper.”

“You barely spent time with her.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No.”

Dominic looked directly into her eyes.

“What’s not fair is a child spending three nights believing her mother was dead.”

Claire’s tears fell.

But Dominic noticed something.

They came too easily.

Like a practiced scene.

“I would never do that.”

Dominic stared at her.

“Then prove it.”

“How?”

“Tell me everything.”

Claire’s breathing slowed.

“What do you want to know?”

“Your relationship with Nathan.”

The room changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Claire looked away.

A mistake.

A tiny mistake.

Dominic saw it.

“Why are you asking about him?”

“Because he lied to me.”

Claire looked back.

“What did he lie about?”

Dominic smiled faintly.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The question.”

He stepped away.

“You’re not asking if he’s innocent.”

Claire said nothing.

“You’re asking what I know.”

The silence became unbearable.

Then Harper’s voice came from the hallway.

“Mommy?”

Everyone turned.

The little girl stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.

Claire looked at her.

And for the first time...

Dominic saw genuine fear on Claire’s face.

Because Harper was not supposed to be there.

The child who had uncovered everything.

The child who remembered every detail.

The child who could destroy their entire plan with one sentence.

Harper looked at Claire.

Then she whispered:

“Why did you lock Mommy away?”

The mansion went completely silent.

Claire’s face lost all color.

Dominic did not move.

He did not need to.

The truth had just walked into the room wearing a yellow nightgown.

And for the first time...

Claire Bennett realized the smallest person in the mansion was the most dangerous witness she had ever faced.
