Chapter 8: The Father Hidden in the Shadows

Dominic Vale had spent his entire life believing blood was simple.
You were born into a family.
You carried its name.
You inherited its enemies.
You protected its legacy.
That was how the world worked.
But over the past few days, Dominic had discovered something far more dangerous.
Blood was not a connection.
Blood was a weapon.
And someone had been using his family’s bloodline as a battlefield for fifteen years.
He stared at the photograph in his hand.
The image was old.
The edges were worn.
But the faces were clear.
A young woman.
A newborn child.
And the man holding the baby.
Dominic knew him.
Not from childhood.
Not from family memories.
From the present.
The man had been beside him through countless battles.
He had attended business meetings.
He had protected Dominic’s life.
The man who appeared in the photograph was…
Daniel Cross.
For the first time in years, Dominic felt something close to disbelief.
Not anger.
Not betrayal.
Disbelief.
Because Daniel was not just a guard.
He was the man Dominic trusted with every security detail in his life.
The man who knew every entrance and exit of the mansion.
The man who knew every weakness.
The man who had just revealed the existence of Harper.
And now…
He was connected to her.
“Daniel.”
The name left Dominic’s mouth like a warning.
Mia watched him carefully.
“You know who he is.”
Dominic did not answer.
She saw the photograph.
Her expression changed.
“You found out.”
Dominic turned toward her.
“You knew?”
Mia closed her eyes.
“I knew his identity.”
“Whose?”
“Harper’s father.”
Silence.
The answer felt heavier than any confession.
“Daniel Cross.”
Mia nodded.
Dominic looked back at the photograph.
“How long?”
“Since before Harper was born.”
His expression darkened.
“So Daniel knew.”
“Yes.”
“And he said nothing.”
Mia looked away.
“He was afraid.”
Dominic almost laughed.
“Everyone is afraid.”
A pause.
“But everyone keeps lying.”
Daniel was brought back to the mansion an hour later.
He entered the main hall surrounded by guards.
Unlike Nathan, Daniel did not pretend.
He did not smile.
He did not create excuses.
He simply looked tired.
Like a man who had been running from the same truth for years.
Dominic stood at the center of the room.
The photograph was on the table between them.
Daniel saw it.
And immediately knew.
“You found it.”
Dominic stared at him.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
Daniel remained silent.
That silence was enough.
Dominic’s voice lowered.
“Tell me you are not Harper’s father.”
Daniel looked down.
“I can’t.”
The room became colder.
Marcus and the guards exchanged looks.
Nobody expected this.
Dominic stepped closer.
“Explain.”
Daniel took a breath.
“My real name is not Daniel Cross.”
Dominic narrowed his eyes.
“What?”
“My father was a member of the Vale organization.”
A pause.
“But I changed my name.”
“Why?”
“Because the Vale name was killing everyone connected to it.”
Dominic stared.
“Who was your father?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Nathan Cross’s father.”
The answer landed like a punch.
Dominic understood.
The entire web.
Nathan.
Daniel.
Harper.
The old family war.
Everyone connected.
“But you and Nathan are brothers?”
Daniel nodded.
“Half-brothers.”
Dominic’s eyes sharpened.
“Then why are you protecting Harper?”
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
Where Harper was sleeping.
“Because she is my daughter.”
The words echoed.
“My sister was her mother.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Dominic felt a strange mix of anger and confusion.
“You were with my sister.”
“Yes.”
“You had a child.”
“Yes.”
“And you let everyone believe Harper was just a maid’s daughter.”
Daniel looked broken.
“I had no choice.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Everyone says that.”
Daniel accepted the anger.
“I loved your sister.”
A pause.
“She was the only person who treated me like a human being.”
Dominic said nothing.
“She knew who my father was.”
“Your father?”
Daniel nodded.
“He was involved with Lucian.”
The name changed the room.
“Lucian forced him to work for him.”
Daniel continued.
“My father wanted out.”
“What happened?”
“He was killed.”
Dominic stared.
“By Lucian?”
Daniel nodded.
“After that, I took Harper and disappeared.”
“But Mia found you.”
“Yes.”
“And my father?”
Daniel looked away.
“Your father helped hide us.”
Dominic remembered Alessandro’s words.
The hidden heir.
The secret child.
The protection.
Everything connected.
“Why didn’t my father tell me?”
Daniel answered:
“Because he knew you would hunt Lucian.”
Dominic’s face became cold.
“He was right.”
“Yes.”
A sound came from the staircase.
Everyone turned.
Harper stood there.
Holding her rabbit.
Her eyes moved between Dominic and Daniel.
“Daddy?”
The word was barely a whisper.
Daniel froze.
Dominic looked at him.
Harper slowly walked down the stairs.
“Is he my daddy?”
Nobody answered.
The little girl looked at Daniel.
Then at Mia.
Then at Dominic.
“Everyone keeps secrets.”
The sentence was heartbreaking because it was true.
Dominic crouched down.
“Harper.”
She looked at him.
“Is my mommy okay?”
“Yes.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
She hugged her rabbit.
“Then why is everyone fighting?”
Nobody had an answer.
Because how could they explain a family war to a child?
How could they explain that adults had spent years destroying each other over money, power, and revenge?
Dominic looked at Harper.
And realized something.
This child was the only innocent person in the entire story.
Everyone else had made choices.
Everyone else had secrets.
Everyone else had blood on their hands.
That night, Dominic returned to the underground room.
Alessandro was still there.
Waiting.
When Dominic entered, his father immediately saw his expression.
“You know.”
Dominic stopped.
“Did you know Daniel was Harper’s father?”
Alessandro nodded.
“Yes.”
Another secret.
Another wound.
Dominic laughed quietly.
“You all knew.”
His father looked away.
“We were trying to protect her.”
“No.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“You were protecting information.”
Alessandro accepted the accusation.
“Maybe.”
The honesty surprised Dominic.
“What changed?”
His father looked at him.
“You.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Alessandro sighed.
“When I disappeared, I thought I could control the situation.”
“But?”
“But secrets grow.”
The old man looked around the hidden chamber.
“They become stronger than the people who created them.”
Dominic looked at him.
“Who killed my sister?”
Alessandro became silent.
Too silent.
Dominic noticed.
“Father.”
A long pause.
Then Alessandro said:
“Lucian did not kill her.”
Dominic frowned.
“Then who?”
Alessandro’s eyes became filled with regret.
“The person who ordered it.”
“Who?”
Alessandro whispered:
“The person who has been manipulating this entire war.”
Dominic waited.
“The person who convinced Nathan to betray you.”
A pause.
“The person who brought Claire into your life.”
Another pause.
“The person who made your mother disappear.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“Who?”
Alessandro looked directly at him.
And finally spoke the name.
“Elena Vale.”
Dominic froze.
His mother.
Again.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She protected Harper.”
“Yes.”
“She saved Mia.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would she kill my sister?”
Alessandro looked away.
“Because Harper was never supposed to exist.”
The words were impossible.
Dominic felt the room spinning.
“What?”
Alessandro continued:
“Your mother believed the Vale family needed one heir.”
His voice became quieter.
“And when your sister gave birth to Harper…”
A pause.
“She saw the child as a threat.”
Dominic stared.
“No.”
His father looked at him sadly.
“Your mother did not disappear to protect you.”
Silence.
“She disappeared because she was running from what she had done.”
Above them, inside the mansion, every camera suddenly turned on.
Every screen displayed the same image.
Elena Vale.
Standing in the hallway.
Looking directly into the camera.
Then her voice came through the speakers.
“Dominic.”
Everyone froze.
Her voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“You finally found the truth.”
Dominic looked toward the ceiling.
Then Elena continued:
“But your father only told you half of it.”
A pause.
“The real betrayal…”
Her voice became colder.
“Has not even begun.”
The screens went black.
And for the first time…
Dominic realized something terrifying.
The secrets he discovered were not the end of the war.
They were only the first layer.
May you like
Because someone had been carefully controlling every move.
And that person was still playing.
