Chapter 12: The Forgotten Heir Returns

The old Vale estate disappeared behind them as Dominic’s convoy raced through the darkness.
No lights.
No sirens.
No unnecessary movement.
Only the sound of engines cutting through the empty road.
Dominic sat in silence.
His hands were folded.
His expression was unreadable.
But everyone around him knew.
This was not calm.
This was the moment before the storm.
Because someone had taken Harper.
Not a business rival.
Not an enemy seeking money.
Someone from his own bloodline.
Another Vale.
Marcus sat in the front passenger seat, checking every piece of information they had collected.
“Boss.”
Dominic looked up.
“What do we know about Adrian Vale?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Almost nothing.”
“Almost?”
“There are records.”
“From where?”
“The old family archives.”
Dominic waited.
Marcus continued.
“Adrian was born twenty-eight years before you.”
Dominic frowned.
“Twenty-eight?”
“Yes.”
“That would make him older than my father.”
Marcus nodded.
“According to the records, Alfred Vale had a son before Alessandro.”
Dominic looked out the window.
The family tree he knew was changing again.
Every branch hiding another secret.
“Why was he erased?”
Marcus looked at the file.
“Because Alfred believed he was dangerous.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Dangerous how?”
Marcus turned a page.
“There are reports of violence.”
“Criminal activity?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Something worse.”
Dominic looked at him.
“What?”
“Adrian was described as someone who could control people.”
Dominic almost smiled.
Another person like Isabella.
Another person who believed human beings were pieces on a board.
“What happened to him?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“He disappeared when he was nineteen.”
“Dead?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Missing.”
Dominic looked ahead.
Not dead.
Not missing.
Waiting.
Meanwhile, deep beneath an abandoned warehouse outside the city, Harper sat on a wooden chair.
Her hands were not tied.
She was not injured.
That was what frightened her more.
Because the man who took her was acting like he did not need chains.
He believed she would stay.
A tall man stood near the window.
His back faced her.
“Are you hungry?”
Harper said nothing.
The man turned.
He was older than Dominic.
Around fifty.
Sharp features.
Dark eyes.
A face carrying years of anger.
“Your mother told you not to trust strangers.”
Harper hugged her rabbit.
“My mommy said good people tell the truth.”
The man smiled slightly.
“Smart woman.”
“Who are you?”
The man looked at her.
“My name is Adrian.”
Harper tilted her head.
“Are you family?”
A strange expression crossed his face.
“Yes.”
“Are you my daddy?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
Harper looked down.
“Then why did you take me?”
Adrian walked closer.
“Because everyone else wanted to use you.”
“I don’t understand.”
He crouched down.
“You are the last person who can stop them.”
Harper frowned.
“Stop who?”
Adrian looked away.
“The Vale family.”
Back at the mansion, Mia woke up.
The first thing she did was call Harper’s name.
Then she realized.
The room was empty.
Her heart dropped.
“No…”
She tried to stand.
Pain immediately stopped her.
Daniel rushed inside.
“What happened?”
Mia looked at him.
“Harper.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“She’s gone.”
For the first time in years, Daniel looked completely terrified.
Not because of danger.
Because of losing his daughter.
“No.”
He moved through the room.
Searching.
As if Harper might somehow be hiding.
“Mia.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel stopped.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“This isn’t your fault.”
But both of them knew.
Everyone who loved Harper had failed to protect her.
Again.
Dominic returned to the mansion briefly.
Only five minutes.
That was all he allowed himself.
When he entered Mia’s room, he saw the pain on her face.
He saw Daniel’s fear.
And he saw the empty bed.
Something inside him broke.
But he refused to show it.
“Dominic…”
Mia whispered.
“I’m sorry.”
He looked at her.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“No?”
“You kept Harper alive for four years.”
A pause.
“You protected her when everyone else wanted something from her.”
His voice lowered.
“I should have protected both of you.”
Mia looked away.
“Dominic…”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“This time, I’m not blaming anyone else.”
That was the first time Mia saw something different in him.
Not the mafia boss.
Not the feared businessman.
Just a man who was tired of losing people.
Daniel approached.
“I know where he might take her.”
Dominic turned.
“Who?”
“Adrian.”
“Where?”
Daniel looked uncertain.
“There is an old property.”
“Another one?”
“Yes.”
Dominic almost laughed.
“How many secrets does my family have?”
Daniel did not answer.
“What property?”
“The Vale orphanage.”
Dominic frowned.
“Orphanage?”
Daniel nodded.
“Your grandfather built it.”
“For charity?”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
“It was where Adrian grew up.”
Dominic became still.
“Explain.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Alfred hid him there.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed Adrian was dangerous.”
Dominic understood.
A child rejected by his own family.
A child who grew up believing he was erased.
That kind of pain did not disappear.
It transformed.
The convoy arrived at the abandoned orphanage after midnight.
The building stood alone.
Broken windows.
Old walls.
A forgotten place.
Dominic entered first.
The inside was filled with old photographs.
Children.
Staff.
Family donations.
Then he saw something.
A picture on the wall.
A young Adrian.
Standing beside a young Alessandro.
His father.
They looked happy.
Like brothers.
Dominic stared.
“Your father knew him.”
Daniel nodded.
“They were close.”
“Then why abandon him?”
Daniel looked away.
“Because Alfred forced Alessandro to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Power.”
Dominic looked at the picture.
“And he chose the empire.”
“Yes.”
Another wound.
Another generation.
A sound echoed from upstairs.
Dominic immediately raised his weapon.
Someone was there.
He moved through the hallway.
Slowly.
Carefully.
At the top floor, he found a room.
Inside was a small table.
On it was a video recorder.
And a note.
Dominic picked it up.
The handwriting was Adrian’s.
You wanted answers.
Now you will receive them.
He pressed play.
Adrian appeared on the screen.
Harper sat beside him.
Safe.
Awake.
“Dominic.”
Adrian looked directly at the camera.
“You and I are not enemies.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Then why take her?”
Adrian continued:
“Because you would never listen otherwise.”
Harper looked at the camera.
“Mr. Dominic…”
Her voice was soft.
“I’m okay.”
Dominic’s eyes changed slightly.
Then Adrian continued.
“You believe Elena is the villain.”
A pause.
“You believe Nathan betrayed you.”
Another pause.
“You believe Claire was manipulated.”
He leaned closer.
“But you still don’t know the truth.”
Dominic watched.
“The truth about what?”
Adrian smiled.
“The night your father disappeared.”
The video glitched.
Then Adrian said:
“Your father was not taken.”
Dominic froze.
“He left.”
Silence.
“Because he discovered something about you.”
The screen went black.
A final message appeared.
Come alone.
And I will tell you why Alessandro abandoned his own son.
Dominic stared at the screen.
Behind him, Marcus whispered:
“Boss…”
But Dominic did not answer.
Because for fifteen years, one question had haunted him.
Why did his father leave?
And now someone finally claimed to know.
The answer was waiting.
With Adrian.
And Harper.
The child who had become the center of a war she never asked for.
Dominic turned toward the door.
“Prepare the car.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You’re going alone?”
Dominic nodded.
“Yes.”
“Boss, it could be a trap.”
Dominic looked at Harper’s image on the black screen.
“It is.”
A pause.
“But this time…”
His eyes hardened.
“I’m the one setting the trap.”
And for the first time in this war…
May you like
Dominic Vale was not chasing the truth.
He was ready to make the truth come to him.
