Chapter 4: The Room Beneath the Forgotten Past

The message remained on Dominic’s phone long after Marcus stopped speaking.

Your father waits.

Three words.

Three words that should have meant nothing.

But they carried the weight of fifteen years of unanswered questions.

Dominic Vale had spent half of his life believing he knew the story of his family.

His father, Alessandro Vale, had died in a private plane crash when Dominic was twenty-two.

The official report said there were no survivors.

The world accepted it.

The enemies accepted it.

Dominic accepted it.

He had buried his grief beneath responsibility and turned himself into the man everyone feared.

But now…

Someone had been living beneath his mansion.

Someone who knew about his father.

Someone who wanted Dominic to find them.

Dominic walked through the hallway without saying a word.

Marcus followed behind him.

The guards around the mansion moved aside immediately.

They had seen their leader angry before.

They had seen him during wars.

They had seen him after betrayal.

But this was different.

This was not anger.

This was a man walking toward a ghost.

The entrance to the hidden room was located beneath the wine cellar.

A section of the stone wall had been removed.

Behind it was a narrow passage that looked older than the mansion itself.

The air smelled different.

Damp.

Cold.

Forgotten.

Dominic looked at the walls.

“This was built before the estate renovation.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“How did nobody know?”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Because the original construction records were changed.”

Dominic stopped.

“Changed by who?”

Marcus handed him a folder.

“We found this inside the cellar office.”

Dominic opened it.

The documents were old.

Very old.

But one signature caught his attention.

Nathan Cross.

His blood ran colder.

“How long?”

Marcus looked at him.

“According to the dates…”

He paused.

“Since before Nathan became your adviser.”

Dominic stared at the paper.

The betrayal was no longer a crack.

It was an earthquake.

Nathan had not suddenly turned against him.

Nathan had been hiding something from the beginning.

They continued deeper.

The passage became narrower.

The walls were covered with old scratches.

Not random marks.

Numbers.

Dates.

Names.

Dominic stopped when he saw one.

Dominic Vale.

Carved into the stone.

Beside it was another name.

Alessandro Vale.

His father.

Marcus noticed.

“Boss…”

Dominic touched the carving.

His father’s name had been there for years.

Waiting.

A voice echoed faintly from ahead.

A cough.

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

Dominic lifted his hand.

“No.”

“Boss, it could be a trap.”

“It is.”

Marcus looked surprised.

Dominic continued walking.

“But traps only work when you don’t know they exist.”

He moved forward.

The passage opened into a small underground chamber.

And there…

Was a man.

Sitting in a chair.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair completely gray.

But his eyes…

Dominic knew those eyes.

Because he had seen them every morning in the mirror.

The man slowly looked up.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then the old man whispered:

“Dominic.”

The sound of his name almost broke something inside him.

Because nobody had said it like that in fifteen years.

Not since before the funeral.

Dominic stood frozen.

“Who are you?”

The old man smiled sadly.

“You already know.”

“No.”

Dominic’s voice became cold.

“You died.”

The man lowered his head.

“I know.”

A silence.

Then Dominic stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

“I’m your father.”

The guards behind Dominic reacted immediately.

Weapons raised.

But Dominic did not move.

His entire world had become impossible.

“Explain.”

That was the only word Dominic could say.

His father looked exhausted.

“I wanted to.”

“Fifteen years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

Alessandro looked away.

“Because I thought you were safer believing I was dead.”

Dominic laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“Safer?”

He stepped closer.

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe I lost my father.”

“I know.”

“You watched me build this empire alone.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Dominic’s voice rose.

“Then tell me why.”

The old man looked at him.

“Because someone inside this family wanted you dead.”

The room became silent.

“Who?”

Alessandro hesitated.

That hesitation told Dominic everything.

“Who?”

His father whispered:

“Your uncle.”

Dominic froze.

“My uncle died years before you disappeared.”

“That is what everyone believed.”

Another impossible truth.

Another hidden lie.

Dominic felt like he was walking through a house built from mirrors.

Every reflection showed a different reality.

“What happened?”

Alessandro looked toward the ceiling.

“The Vale empire was never as clean as you thought.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“My father built it.”

“Yes.”

“And you destroyed it?”

“No.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“I tried to fix what he created.”

Those words hit harder than expected.

Dominic had spent years protecting the family name.

But what if the family name itself was built on something rotten?

“What does Nathan have to do with this?”

His father’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Nathan?”

“Yes.”

Alessandro looked at him carefully.

“You trusted him?”

Dominic said nothing.

That was answer enough.

His father sighed.

“That boy was never your friend.”

The words cut deep.

“He saved my life.”

“He was supposed to.”

Dominic stared.

“What does that mean?”

Alessandro leaned forward.

“Because saving your life made you trust him.”

The room went silent.

“He needed you alive.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“For what?”

“Access.”

A pause.

“Power.”

Another pause.

“And something else.”

“What?”

Alessandro looked directly into his son’s eyes.

“The inheritance.”

Dominic felt his stomach tighten.

“My inheritance?”

“Your family’s original fortune.”

“I control everything.”

“No.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“You control what they allowed you to control.”

The words echoed.

“What are you saying?”

“Your company accounts. Your properties. Your investments.”

He looked around the hidden room.

“All of it was designed with a weakness.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Who designed it?”

Alessandro whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

A chill moved through him.

“Why?”

“Because he believed the Vale family needed a stronger heir.”

Dominic stared.

“My grandfather created a system that could control me?”

“Yes.”

“And Nathan knows?”

“Yes.”

The pieces began connecting.

The fake accounts.

The hidden documents.

The secret rooms.

Mia’s discovery.

Claire’s betrayal.

Everything led back to something much older.

Something planned.

A war that started before Dominic was even old enough to fight.

Then Alessandro said something that changed everything.

“Nathan isn’t working alone.”

Dominic looked up.

“Who else?”

His father looked toward the tunnel entrance.

“Claire.”

Dominic’s face became emotionless.

“I know.”

“No.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“She betrayed me.”

“Yes.”

“But she isn’t the mastermind.”

Dominic became still.

“Then who is?”

Alessandro’s voice dropped.

“The person who has been controlling Nathan and Claire from the beginning.”

A pause.

“The person who owns their loyalty.”

Dominic waited.

“Who?”

His father looked at him.

And said a name Dominic never expected to hear.

“Your mother.”

The room stopped.

Dominic’s expression changed for the first time.

His mother had died when he was twelve.

A car accident.

Another tragedy.

Another funeral.

Another story everyone accepted.

“No.”

Alessandro looked at him with sorrow.

“I’m sorry.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

Dominic took a step back.

His mother.

The woman whose photograph sat in his office.

The woman he remembered as gentle.

Kind.

Loving.

“You’re lying.”

Alessandro looked broken.

“I wish I was.”

Before Dominic could answer, Marcus’s voice came through the radio.

“Boss.”

Dominic pressed the button.

“What?”

A pause.

Then Marcus spoke carefully.

“We have a problem.”

“What problem?”

“The mansion security system was hacked.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“By who?”

Marcus answered:

“We traced the signal.”

A pause.

“It came from inside the mansion.”

Dominic looked around the underground chamber.

Then at his father.

Then toward the darkness behind them.

Someone was still inside his home.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been waiting.

Marcus continued:

“Boss…”

“What?”

“The cameras caught the person.”

Dominic’s grip tightened.

“Send me the image.”

A few seconds later, his phone received the picture.

He opened it.

And froze.

Because standing in the hallway of his mansion…

Was someone who was supposed to be dead.

His mother.

Elena Vale.

Looking directly into the camera.

Smiling.

May you like

And beneath the image was a message:

Come upstairs, son. We need to talk.
