Chapter 3: The Little Witness

For five seconds, nobody moved.

Not Dominic.

Not Claire.

Not even the guards standing near the entrance.

The entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.

Because the accusation did not come from a detective.

It did not come from a rival.

It did not come from someone looking for revenge.

It came from a four-year-old girl wearing a faded yellow nightgown, holding a stuffed rabbit with one ear bent from years of love.

Harper Carter.

The smallest person in the room.

The person everyone had ignored.

Claire stared at her.

Her carefully controlled expression cracked.

“Harper…”

The little girl stepped closer to Dominic.

She did not run to Claire.

She did not hide.

She moved toward the only person who had believed her.

Dominic looked down at her.

“Harper.”

His voice softened.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Claire immediately shook her head.

“Dominic, she’s confused. She’s been through a terrible experience.”

Dominic did not look at Claire.

“Harper.”

The girl swallowed.

Her fingers tightened around the stuffed rabbit.

“Miss Claire took Mommy downstairs.”

Claire’s face changed.

“That’s not true.”

Dominic raised one hand.

The room became silent again.

“Let her speak.”

Harper looked at the floor.

“She told Mommy that she needed help with something.”

“What kind of help?”

Harper thought carefully.

“She said it was about the wedding.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“The wedding?”

Harper nodded.

“Mommy looked scared.”

Claire interrupted.

“She was probably tired.”

Harper looked at her.

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

But certain.

“Mommy was scared because Miss Claire was angry.”

A cold feeling moved through Dominic.

“What happened after they went downstairs?”

Harper hugged her rabbit tighter.

“I waited.”

“How long?”

“Until my bedtime.”

“And then?”

“Mommy didn’t come back.”

Her voice became smaller.

“I went to find her.”

Dominic crouched down.

“You went alone?”

Harper nodded.

“I heard voices.”

“Whose voices?”

She looked toward Claire.

“Miss Claire.”

A pause.

“And Mr. Cross.”

Nathan.

Even hearing his name from a child made the room colder.

“What did they say?”

Harper looked frightened.

“I don’t know all the words.”

“That’s okay.”

Dominic kept his voice gentle.

“Tell me the words you remember.”

The little girl closed her eyes.

Trying to remember.

“Mommy said she wouldn’t tell.”

Nobody breathed.

Claire’s face became frozen.

Dominic continued.

“Wouldn’t tell what?”

Harper shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A few seconds passed.

Then she whispered:

“Mr. Cross said if Mommy talked, everyone would lose everything.”

Dominic stood slowly.

His expression disappeared.

That sentence confirmed one thing.

Mia was not randomly attacked.

She knew something.

Something dangerous.

Something Nathan and Claire wanted hidden.

Claire took a step back.

“You’re twisting a child’s memories.”

Dominic looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I’m listening to them.”

The words hit harder than shouting.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“You really believe her over me?”

Dominic stared at the woman who was supposed to become his wife.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No doubt.

“Yes.”

Mia woke up an hour later.

The doctors said she was dehydrated and weak but stable.

The injuries were serious.

But she was alive.

Dominic entered her room alone.

Harper was sleeping beside her.

The little girl refused to leave her mother.

Mia opened her eyes.

When she saw Dominic, guilt crossed her face.

“You found me.”

Dominic sat beside the bed.

“I should have found you sooner.”

Mia looked away.

“Dominic…”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“Don’t protect me from the truth.”

She remained silent.

“You knew something.”

Mia’s eyes moved toward Harper.

Then back to him.

“Yes.”

“What?”

She hesitated.

For three years, Mia had worked inside Dominic’s home.

She knew him well.

She knew his temper.

She knew his power.

But she also knew his sense of justice.

Finally, she spoke.

“I discovered something about Nathan.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“Tell me.”

Mia took a slow breath.

“Six months ago, I noticed unusual payments.”

“From where?”

“From accounts connected to the estate.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“Money was being moved?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Mia looked nervous.

“Millions.”

The room became quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What stopped you?”

Mia looked toward the door.

Then lowered her voice.

“Nathan.”

Dominic already knew the answer.

“He threatened you?”

Mia nodded.

“He said I was misunderstanding things.”

“And Claire?”

“She knew.”

Dominic looked away.

A storm was forming behind his eyes.

“What exactly did you find?”

Mia swallowed.

“Documents.”

“What documents?”

“Your father’s old business records.”

Dominic froze.

His father.

A name rarely mentioned inside the mansion.

A man who had built the foundation of the Vale empire before dying unexpectedly fifteen years earlier.

“What about my father?”

Mia whispered:

“Someone has been stealing from the company since before you took control.”

Dominic stared at her.

“Impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

She closed her eyes.

“But the signatures…”

“What?”

“They were real.”

Dominic’s voice lowered.

“Whose signatures?”

Mia looked directly at him.

“Your father’s.”

The room felt suddenly colder.

Dominic stood.

“My father died fifteen years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then how could he sign documents?”

Mia shook her head.

“That’s what I was trying to find out.”

Dominic walked to the window.

His entire life had been built around one truth.

His father had died.

The empire passed to him.

The enemies came afterward.

But now a new possibility appeared.

A terrifying one.

What if the betrayal started before Dominic even became the head of the family?

“What else did you find?”

Mia looked nervous.

“There was one more thing.”

“What?”

“The night before I disappeared…”

She paused.

“I found a hidden room.”

Dominic turned.

“A hidden room?”

“Under the mansion.”

His eyes moved slightly.

“Another room?”

Mia nodded.

“The wine cellar wasn’t the only secret beneath this house.”

Dominic remembered Harper’s words.

Under the house.

Knocking.

Slow knocking.

His mansion was becoming a maze filled with ghosts.

“Where?”

Mia closed her eyes.

“I didn’t get inside.”

“Why?”

“Because Nathan found me.”

A silence followed.

“He told me if I wanted Harper to stay safe…”

Her voice broke.

“He told me to forget what I saw.”

Dominic clenched his fist.

“What was behind that door?”

Mia looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But I heard someone.”

Dominic’s eyes sharpened.

“Someone?”

Mia nodded.

“A man.”

The room went silent.

“What did he say?”

Mia’s voice dropped.

“He said…”

She struggled to remember.

“He said, ‘Dominic can never know his father was alive.’”

The world seemed to stop.

Dominic did not move.

Did not blink.

For years, he had believed his father was dead.

For years, he had carried the weight of a lost family.

But now…

A woman had been imprisoned because she discovered something impossible.

Something that could destroy everything.

His father.

Alive.

Impossible.

Unless someone had spent fifteen years making sure Dominic believed a lie.

Suddenly, his phone rang.

Marcus.

Dominic answered.

“What?”

The guard’s voice sounded urgent.

“Boss…”

A pause.

“You need to come downstairs.”

“Why?”

Marcus swallowed.

“We found another room beneath the mansion.”

Dominic’s eyes darkened.

“And?”

The answer came quietly.

“Someone has been living there.”

Dominic looked at Harper sleeping beside Mia.

Then at the door.

Then toward the darkness beneath his home.

A place where secrets had been buried for fifteen years.

“Who?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then said:

“We don’t know.”

A pause.

“But whoever it was…”

His voice lowered.

“They left a message for you.”

Dominic tightened his grip on the phone.

“What message?”

Marcus answered:

Three words.

“Your father waits.”

Dominic stood completely still.

Because for the first time in his life...

The man who feared nothing felt something he hated.

May you like

Uncertainty.

And beneath his own mansion, a forgotten enemy was waiting to tell him the truth.
