Chapter 9: The Woman Who Held The Last Secret

Nobody recognized fear on Alejandro Moretti’s face often.

Enemies had seen his anger.

Rivals had seen his cruelty.

Business partners had seen his cold calculations.

But fear?

Almost never.

Yet now…

As the woman stood inside his study, Alejandro felt something he had not felt in years.

Uncertainty.

Because this woman was not supposed to matter.

She was not a bodyguard.

Not a family member.

Not a rival.

Not someone whose name appeared in his empire’s records.

She was simply someone who had always been there.

Someone everyone ignored.

Someone who moved through the mansion like a shadow.

The woman who served tea during meetings.

The woman who arranged flowers in the halls.

The woman who knew which doors were open and which secrets were locked.

Mrs. Evelyn Hart.

The Moretti family’s longtime house manager.

Emma stared.

“Mrs. Hart?”

The woman smiled gently.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Emma’s expression changed.

Because that was the confusing part.

Evelyn had always been kind.

She gave Emma warm blankets during cold nights.

She kept extra cookies hidden in the kitchen.

She fixed Emma’s broken backpack when the zipper broke.

She did not look like someone involved in murder.

But then again…

Emma was learning that appearances meant very little.

Alejandro’s voice was cold.

“You know where Emma’s mother is?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Safe from who?”

Evelyn looked around the room.

At Victor.

At Clara.

At Angelo.

Then finally at Alejandro.

“From all of you.”

The words hit hard.

Victor stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn did not answer him.

Instead, she walked toward the desk.

She looked at the hidden camera.

“The final piece.”

Bruno watched her carefully.

“You knew about this?”

Evelyn nodded.

“I helped create it.”

Alejandro stared.

“You?”

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

“You installed the camera?”

“Yes.”

“You recorded my private conversations?”

“Yes.”

“You watched me?”

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“No.”

A pause.

“I watched the people around you.”

That answer was somehow worse.

Alejandro looked at her.

“Why?”

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Because Kiara was not the first warning.”

Nobody moved.

“What?”

Evelyn looked at the fireplace.

“For years, strange things happened around this family.”

“Missing documents.”

“Changed security files.”

“Payments that nobody could explain.”

“People disappearing before they could speak.”

She looked at Angelo.

“And every time, the blame went somewhere else.”

Angelo’s expression remained unreadable.

Evelyn continued.

“The truth was hiding in the one place nobody thought to look.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Where?”

“Inside the family.”

A heavy silence.

Victor laughed quietly.

“So everyone was guilty.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice became firm.

“Everyone was manipulated.”

She turned toward Alejandro.

“Even you.”

Alejandro hated that answer.

Because everyone kept saying the same thing.

That he was powerful.

That he was responsible.

That he was dangerous.

But now everyone was telling him he had been controlled.

And he did not know which was worse.

Being betrayed.

Or realizing he had never truly been in control.

“Tell me everything.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Three years ago, I discovered a hidden account connected to Project Eclipse.”

Bruno looked at her.

“The same project.”

“Yes.”

“Who created it?”

Evelyn looked at Angelo.

The old man said nothing.

But everyone understood.

Evelyn continued.

“Angelo created Project Eclipse years ago.”

Alejandro looked at his father.

“You created a system to destroy your own family?”

Angelo responded calmly.

“I created a system to prevent weakness.”

“That is the same thing.”

The old man’s eyes hardened.

“No.”

“It is exactly the same.”

For once, Angelo did not reply.

Evelyn continued.

“The problem was someone modified the project.”

Victor frowned.

“Modified it?”

“Yes.”

“Someone changed the purpose.”

Bruno stepped closer.

“From controlling the leader…”

“To removing the leader.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Exactly.”

Alejandro looked at the screen.

“So someone used my own father’s plan against me.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“That is what I spent three years trying to discover.”

“And?”

She was silent.

Too long.

Alejandro noticed.

“You know.”

Evelyn looked away.

“I know who started it.”

Everyone waited.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at Clara.

Then Victor.

Then Alejandro.

“The person who started Project Eclipse was…”

She stopped.

The door behind her suddenly slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

The lights went out.

Again.

Darkness.

A gunshot exploded.

Emma screamed.

The sound echoed through the study.

When the emergency lights returned…

Evelyn was on the floor.

Blood spread across her shoulder.

Bruno immediately moved.

“Everyone down!”

Guards rushed through the hallway.

But nobody had entered.

Nobody had left.

The shooter was not outside.

The bullet had come from inside the room.

Alejandro looked around.

Everyone was still there.

Victor.

Clara.

Angelo.

Bruno.

Emma.

Then his eyes moved slowly.

To the only person standing near the hidden camera system.

The only person who had access to the security controls.

The only person who had not moved when the gun fired.

Evelyn’s eyes opened slightly.

She grabbed Alejandro’s sleeve.

Her voice was weak.

“Don’t trust…”

She coughed.

“Don’t trust the person who looks innocent.”

Alejandro looked at everyone.

The words echoed.

The person who looks innocent.

Then Emma suddenly pointed.

Her little finger moved toward the floor.

“There.”

Everyone looked.

A small object lay beside the fireplace.

A remote trigger.

And engraved on it was a symbol.

A symbol Alejandro recognized.

Because it belonged to only one person.

His own family.

The Moretti crest.

But underneath it…

Someone had carved a second mark.

A tiny letter.

E

Alejandro’s face changed.

“Evelyn…”

But Evelyn shook her head weakly.

“No.”

She looked terrified.

“That’s not mine.”

Everyone froze.

The injured woman looked toward the hidden camera.

“The E doesn’t mean Evelyn.”

A pause.

“It means Elena.”

Bruno’s eyes widened.

“Elena Carter.”

Emma’s mother.

The room went silent.

Alejandro stared.

“My maid?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“She was never your maid.”

A final whisper escaped her lips.

“She was the person who knew the truth before all of us.”

Then Evelyn lost consciousness.

And for the first time that night…

Alejandro wondered if the woman he had spent years protecting…

May you like

Was actually the person who had been protecting him.
