Chapter 10: The Maid Who Was Never A Maid

The name remained hanging in the air.
Elena Carter.
Emma’s mother.
The woman who cleaned the Moretti mansion.
The woman who quietly carried laundry through the halls.
The woman who apologized whenever she accidentally walked into a room full of powerful men.
The woman everyone ignored.
That woman.
Alejandro stared at the symbol carved into the remote trigger.
The Moretti crest.
And the letter beneath it.
E.
Not Evelyn.
Elena.
His mind struggled to process it.
“No.”
The word came out almost automatically.
Bruno looked at him.
“Boss…”
Alejandro shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became stronger.
“Elena Carter is a housekeeper.”
Evelyn, barely conscious on the floor, opened her eyes.
“That’s what she wanted you to believe.”
The room became silent.
Emma looked at her.
“My mommy is not lying.”
Everyone turned.
The little girl stood there.
Small.
Afraid.
But certain.
“She helps people.”
Nobody answered.
Because once again, the smallest person in the room had said something the adults had forgotten.
Helping people did not always look powerful.
Sometimes it looked like a tired woman coming home after midnight.
Sometimes it looked like a mother carrying groceries with sore hands.
Sometimes it looked like someone choosing to stay invisible.
Bruno knelt beside Evelyn.
“You’re losing blood.”
Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“Forget me.”
Her voice was weak.
“Find Elena.”
Bruno looked at Alejandro.
“Boss?”
Alejandro did not respond.
His eyes remained on Emma.
Because suddenly everything about the little girl seemed different.
The backpack.
The hidden camera.
The way she found the emergency system.
The way the device responded to her.
None of it felt random.
“What is your mother?”
Emma frowned.
“My mommy?”
Alejandro nodded.
Emma thought for a moment.
“She’s a nurse.”
Everyone looked at each other.
A nurse.
Simple.
Normal.
Except nothing about this night was normal anymore.
Victor walked toward the screen.
“There must be more files.”
Bruno looked at him.
“You’re helping now?”
Victor ignored the comment.
“If Elena knew about Project Eclipse, she may have found the original records.”
Alejandro looked at his brother.
“Why do you care?”
Victor stopped.
The question hit harder than expected.
Because after everything…
Alejandro still did not know whether Victor was an enemy or an ally.
Victor looked down.
“Because I thought you killed Kiara.”
His voice lowered.
“And I spent three years becoming someone I hated because of that belief.”
A pause.
“I want the truth.”
For the first time, Alejandro saw something different in Victor.
Not betrayal.
Regret.
But regret could not bring back his daughter.
Nothing could.
Suddenly, Bruno’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Bruno looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“It’s Elena.”
Alejandro stepped forward.
“Answer it.”
Bruno pressed the button.
But nobody spoke.
Because the call was not normal.
There was no greeting.
No voice.
Only a recording.
A woman’s breathing.
Then Elena’s voice.
“If you are hearing this…”
A pause.
“…then Alejandro Moretti finally knows.”
Alejandro froze.
She knew.
She knew this moment would happen.
The recording continued.
“My name is Elena Carter.”
Emma smiled slightly.
“My mommy.”
Nobody spoke.
Elena continued.
“For twelve years, I have hidden from the Moretti family.”
Angelo’s expression changed.
Twelve years.
The exact amount of time since his supposed death.
“Because twelve years ago, I discovered something that should have destroyed this family.”
A pause.
“The truth about Angelo Moretti.”
Everyone looked at the old man.
Angelo remained silent.
Elena continued.
“Angelo did not die.”
A pause.
“Because he was hiding.”
Alejandro looked at his father.
“From who?”
The recording answered.
“From the people who created the Moretti empire.”
The room became colder.
People who created the empire.
Not Angelo.
Someone before him.
Elena continued.
“Angelo spent years searching for the person controlling the family from the shadows.”
Bruno whispered:
“Another player.”
“Yes.”
Elena’s recording continued.
“And when he found that person…”
Static.
The audio distorted.
Everyone leaned closer.
Then her voice returned.
“…he realized the enemy was not outside the family.”
A pause.
“The enemy was born into it.”
The recording stopped.
Everyone waited.
Then another file started automatically.
A video.
The image was old.
Grainy.
A young Elena appeared.
Not a maid.
Not tired.
Not afraid.
She was standing in a hospital.
Holding a folder.
Beside her was a little girl.
A younger Emma.
Only a baby.
Alejandro stared.
Because behind Elena stood someone else.
Someone he recognized.
A person from his past.
Someone he thought had died years ago.
Angelo stepped closer.
His face changed.
“No.”
The video showed Elena speaking to the person.
The audio was unclear.
But one sentence could be heard.
“You can’t hide her forever.”
Then the camera turned.
And revealed the person holding baby Emma.
Alejandro stopped breathing.
Because he knew that face.
Everyone knew that face.
It was Kiara’s doctor.
The doctor who signed the death certificate.
The doctor who told Alejandro his daughter could not be saved.
The doctor who disappeared afterward.
But there was something else.
The doctor was holding a document.
A document with the Moretti crest.
And a name.
PROJECT ECLIPSE: SUBJECT ZERO
Emma looked at the screen.
“Why is my picture there?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was staring at the same thing.
The file contained Emma’s name.
Not Kiara’s.
Not Alejandro’s.
Emma Carter.
The little girl who walked into the study.
The little girl who saved the most feared man in New York.
The little girl who somehow had been part of this story since before she could remember.
Angelo whispered:
“No…”
Alejandro looked at him.
“You know.”
The old man’s face had lost its confidence.
For the first time, he looked truly afraid.
“What is she?”
Angelo stared at Emma.
And his answer changed everything.
“She is the reason Kiara died.”
Emma stepped backward.
Her eyes filled with confusion.
“No.”
Alejandro immediately moved.
Despite the poison.
Despite the pain.
He positioned himself between Emma and Angelo.
A dying mafia boss protecting a child.
The irony would have been impossible to imagine hours ago.
“Choose your next words carefully.”
Angelo looked at his son.
Because for the first time in decades…
Alejandro was not protecting an empire.
Not money.
Not power.
A child.
Angelo slowly said:
“Because if Elena told you the truth…”
He looked at Emma.
“…then you are protecting the wrong person.”
The lights flickered again.
The hidden camera activated.
A final message appeared.
FILE UNLOCKED: THE REAL SUBJECT ZERO
Everyone stared.
Then the screen displayed a photograph.
A child.
A little girl.
With a pink ribbon in her hair.
Alejandro’s heart stopped.
Because the picture was not Emma.
It was Kiara.
And underneath the image were four words:
May you like
SHE WAS NEVER HUMAN TARGET.
