Chapter 2: The Man Who Came To Watch Him Die

The footsteps stopped.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The entire room felt frozen.
Emma stood beside the hidden compartment, holding the small black camera in her tiny hands.
Alejandro Moretti lay on the floor, barely conscious, his breathing shallow and uneven.
And in the doorway…
stood the man who had spent two decades standing beside him.
The man who knew every security code.
Every hidden entrance.
Every weakness.
Every secret.
Victor Moretti.
Alejandro’s younger brother.
The man the entire Moretti family trusted.
Victor was dressed perfectly.
Dark gray suit.
Black leather shoes.
Silver watch.
Not a single wrinkle.
Not a single sign of panic.
That was what scared Alejandro the most.
A normal person walking into a room and seeing someone dying would react.
They would freeze.
They would call for help.
They would show fear.
Victor showed nothing.
Only calm.
Almost peaceful.
“Brother.”
Victor’s voice was soft.
Almost affectionate.
Emma looked at him carefully.
Children were not good at understanding power.
But they were excellent at understanding people.
Adults lied with words.
Children listened to everything else.
The eyes.
The hands.
The breathing.
The smile.
And Victor’s smile was wrong.
It did not belong in a room where someone was dying.
“Mr. Moretti is sick,” Emma said.
Victor looked down at her.
For a moment, surprise crossed his face.
Not because she was there.
But because she was holding something she should never have found.
The camera.
His eyes moved toward it.
Only for a second.
But Alejandro saw it.
And that one second confirmed everything.
Victor knew.
He knew about the camera.
He knew about the hidden compartment.
He knew what Emma had discovered.
Alejandro forced his fingers to move.
Barely.
But enough.
Victor noticed.
“You’re still fighting?”
A quiet laugh escaped him.
“Of course you are.”
He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.
The lock clicked.
Emma heard it.
Her small body became tense.
“Why did you lock the door?”
Victor ignored her.
He walked toward Alejandro.
For years, people had watched Alejandro Moretti walk into rooms and change the atmosphere.
Politicians became nervous.
Businessmen became careful.
Enemies became silent.
But now the roles had reversed.
Victor looked down at the most feared man in New York like he was already a memory.
“You know what your biggest mistake was?”
Alejandro tried to answer.
Nothing.
Victor continued.
“You believed fear created loyalty.”
He walked around him slowly.
“But fear only creates obedience.”
His shoes stopped beside the broken wineglass.
“You spent your whole life teaching people to fear you.”
Victor looked toward the dark red stain on the carpet.
“Then you were shocked when nobody loved you.”
A weak sound escaped Alejandro’s throat.
Anger.
Not because Victor insulted him.
Because part of it was true.
Alejandro had built an empire based on control.
He rewarded loyalty.
He punished betrayal.
But somewhere along the way, he stopped knowing the difference between respect and fear.
Victor crouched down.
“You know what’s funny?”
He lowered his voice.
“For thirty years, everyone thought I was the dangerous one.”
His smile disappeared.
“They were right.”
Emma watched silently.
She did not understand everything.
But she understood one thing.
This man was not helping.
He was hurting.
She slowly moved backward.
Victor noticed.
“Little girl.”
Emma stopped.
His voice was gentle.
Too gentle.
“What is your name?”
Emma hugged her rabbit tighter.
“Emma.”
“Emma.”
Victor repeated it.
Then he smiled.
“Your mother works here, doesn’t she?”
Emma nodded.
“Where is she?”
“Downstairs.”
Victor looked toward the door.
“Good.”
The way he said it made Emma uncomfortable.
“Why?”
Victor looked back at her.
“Because she won’t interfere.”
Emma’s face changed.
“She would help.”
A small sentence.
But it carried something powerful.
Victor studied her.
“You really believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Emma looked at Alejandro.
Then back at Victor.
“Because my mommy always helps people.”
For the first time, Victor’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not sadness.
Something colder.
“Your mother made the same mistake.”
Emma frowned.
“What mistake?”
Victor stood.
“Trusting people.”
The words hung in the air.
Then suddenly…
A sound came from the hallway.
A phone ringing.
Victor froze.
Not his phone.
Alejandro’s.
The phone that had fallen beside the desk.
Impossible.
Nobody had touched it.
Victor looked down.
The screen was glowing.
Incoming call.
The name appeared.
BRUNO FERRARO
Alejandro’s head moved slightly.
His head of security.
His most loyal guard.
Victor’s face became serious.
Because Bruno was supposed to be outside the mansion.
Not calling.
Victor walked toward the phone.
Emma watched.
“Shouldn’t you answer?”
Victor stopped.
He looked at her.
The little girl had asked a simple question.
But somehow it sounded like a challenge.
Victor picked up the phone.
Before he could speak, Bruno’s voice exploded through the receiver.
“Boss!”
Victor remained silent.
Bruno continued.
“Boss, are you there?”
A pause.
Then:
“Something is wrong. The cameras just went offline for exactly thirty-seven seconds.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
Emma looked confused.
Thirty-seven seconds.
Why was that important?
Because Victor knew.
Thirty-seven seconds was not a random failure.
It was a signal.
Someone else had entered the system.
Someone else was watching.
Victor slowly turned toward the hidden camera in Emma’s hand.
His expression changed.
Someone had anticipated his plan.
Someone had created a backup.
Alejandro saw the fear flash across his brother’s face.
Only a fraction of a second.
But it was there.
Victor quickly ended the call.
Too late.
Bruno had heard enough.
The security team would be coming.
Victor looked at the door.
Then at Alejandro.
Then at Emma.
His calculations were obvious.
He had seconds.
He walked toward Emma.
Alejandro’s eyes widened.
No.
Not her.
He tried to move.
His body refused.
Victor reached out his hand.
Emma stepped back.
“What are you doing?”
Victor smiled.
“I’m taking you downstairs.”
“No.”
The answer surprised him.
A four-year-old child had just refused him.
Victor stared.
Emma held the rabbit tighter.
“My mommy said never go with strangers.”
Something almost like amusement appeared on Victor’s face.
“Smart girl.”
He took another step.
Then—
The lights went out.
Complete darkness.
The fireplace became the only source of light.
Victor stopped.
A second later, a small sound came from somewhere inside the room.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Emma looked down.
The hidden camera in her hand had activated.
A tiny red light blinked.
And then a voice came from the device.
A recording.
A voice Alejandro recognized instantly.
His own voice.
Recorded years ago.
“If anyone finds this message, it means I was betrayed.”
Victor’s face changed completely.
Because he had never heard that recording.
Alejandro had never told anyone about it.
The hidden camera was not just recording.
It was a trap.
The voice continued.
“And if my brother Victor is the one listening…”
Silence.
Victor stopped breathing.
Alejandro closed his eyes.
Because he finally understood.
Years ago, he had suspected betrayal.
He had prepared for it.
But he never imagined the betrayal would come from the person standing closest to him.
The recording continued:
“Victor…”
“Your biggest mistake was believing I never saw you.”
The room went silent.
Emma looked between the two brothers.
And for the first time that night…
May you like
Victor Moretti looked afraid.
