Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The room became completely silent.
Not the peaceful silence Emma knew.
Not the quiet after a long day.
This was the silence of people realizing the world they believed in was built on a lie.
Angelo Moretti stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Calm.
Unbothered.
Like he had not just returned from the dead.
Like he had not just shattered three years of grief, twelve years of history, and an entire family’s understanding of reality.
Alejandro stared at him.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
“You died.”
The words came out again.
This time louder.
Angelo tilted his head.
“Yes.”
A strange answer.
Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.
“You admit it?”
Angelo walked slowly into the room.
His cane tapped against the marble floor.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
“I died to the world.”
He stopped beside the desk.
“But not to myself.”
Victor remained frozen.
For the first time in decades, he looked like a child standing in front of his father.
Not a criminal.
Not a strategist.
Not the man who had planned Alejandro’s downfall.
Just a son.
Alejandro noticed.
And that terrified him.
Because Victor feared almost nothing.
Except Angelo.
“Victor.”
The old man looked at his younger son.
Victor straightened immediately.
“Yes, Father.”
Emma noticed.
The way Victor answered.
The way his shoulders moved.
The way his confidence disappeared.
This was not respect.
This was fear.
Angelo smiled slightly.
“Still following orders.”
Victor said nothing.
Alejandro looked between them.
“You were working for him.”
Victor’s silence confirmed it.
Alejandro’s expression hardened.
“All this time…”
He looked at Victor.
“The poison.”
A pause.
“The camera.”
Another pause.
“Kiara.”
Victor’s face changed.
“Don’t.”
Alejandro’s voice became colder.
“You knew.”
Victor looked away.
“I knew pieces.”
“Pieces?”
Alejandro tried to rise.
Pain forced him back down.
“You knew my daughter was murdered and you said nothing.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
Alejandro looked at him.
“I understand perfectly.”
The old anger returned.
“You let me bury my child while you protected him.”
Angelo interrupted.
“Enough.”
One word.
And everyone stopped.
Even Alejandro.
Because Angelo Moretti had always possessed that ability.
A single word from him could silence a room.
The difference was…
Alejandro had spent his life trying to escape that power.
And now it was standing in front of him again.
Angelo looked at his son.
“You always were emotional.”
Alejandro stared.
“Emotional?”
“Yes.”
The old man walked closer.
“That was your weakness.”
“My weakness was loving my daughter?”
Angelo did not answer.
That silence was crueler than any insult.
Emma looked at Alejandro.
She saw something she had never seen before.
The strongest man in the house looked broken.
Not because he was dying.
Because someone had attacked the one thing he could never protect.
His family.
Angelo turned toward Emma.
“You.”
Emma held her rabbit tighter.
“What?”
“What is your mother’s name?”
Emma hesitated.
“Emma Carter.”
“I know your name.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Your mother.”
Emma became cautious.
“Why?”
Angelo looked at Clara.
Then Victor.
Then Alejandro.
“Because she is the reason you are here.”
Nobody understood.
Alejandro looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Angelo smiled.
“Your maid is not just a maid.”
Emma froze.
Her mother.
No.
That could not be true.
Her mother cleaned rooms.
Cooked meals.
Worked long hours.
She was just Emma’s mother.
A normal person.
Angelo continued.
“She has spent years pretending to be invisible.”
Alejandro looked at the door.
“Emma’s mother?”
“Yes.”
Victor suddenly spoke.
“Father…”
Angelo looked at him.
“What?”
Victor’s face became serious.
“You never told me she knew.”
Angelo smiled.
“Because you were never meant to know.”
That sentence changed everything.
Victor stepped back.
For the first time, Angelo had revealed a secret even he kept.
Alejandro looked toward Emma.
“What does your mother know?”
Emma shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
And she was telling the truth.
She knew her mother worked hard.
She knew her mother was tired.
She knew her mother always worried.
But secrets?
No.
Her mother never told her secrets.
Angelo studied her.
“You really don’t know.”
Emma frowned.
“Know what?”
The old man looked at Alejandro.
“She is the last person alive who knows what happened that night.”
Alejandro’s face changed.
“What night?”
Angelo’s eyes became darker.
“The night Kiara died.”
The room froze again.
Emma looked confused.
“My mommy knows about Kiara?”
Clara covered her mouth.
Victor looked at Angelo.
“You kept her alive?”
Angelo ignored him.
Alejandro’s voice became dangerous.
“Explain.”
The old man leaned on his cane.
“Your daughter’s death was not an attack against you.”
Alejandro stared.
“Then what was it?”
Angelo looked at him.
“It was a message.”
“A message?”
“Yes.”
“To whom?”
Angelo smiled.
“To me.”
Everyone went silent.
Alejandro’s expression changed.
“You’re saying Kiara was killed because of you?”
Angelo nodded.
“Yes.”
The answer was horrifying.
Because it meant Alejandro had spent three years blaming enemies.
Blaming rivals.
Blaming himself.
But the truth was connected to something much older.
A war before his empire.
Before his power.
Before his name became feared.
Angelo continued.
“Your daughter was never the target.”
Alejandro whispered:
“Then who was?”
The old man looked directly at him.
“You.”
A long silence.
Then the hidden camera in Emma’s hand suddenly flashed.
A new file appeared.
Everyone turned.
Another video.
Another secret.
The screen showed a hospital hallway.
Three years earlier.
The night Kiara died.
A young woman walked through the corridor.
Carrying documents.
Looking terrified.
Alejandro stared at the screen.
Because he recognized her.
Emma’s mother.
The video showed her entering a doctor’s office.
Then a man followed behind her.
The camera angle changed.
The man’s face appeared.
Alejandro stopped breathing.
Because the man was not Angelo.
Not Victor.
Not anyone from his family.
It was someone Alejandro trusted completely.
Someone who had stood beside him during every war.
His closest friend.
His right hand.
Bruno Ferraro.
Emma looked at Alejandro.
“Who is that?”
Alejandro could not answer.
Because the man who was supposed to protect him…
Had been hiding the truth all along.
The video continued.
Bruno placed a folder on the desk.
The doctor opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Kiara.
Then Bruno said four words that destroyed everything Alejandro believed:
“The girl cannot survive.”
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Alejandro whispered:
“Bruno…”
And for the first time that night…

He realized the betrayal inside his home was much bigger than he imagined.
