Chapter 4: The Woman Behind The Locked Door

The door handle moved slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Nobody breathed.
The entire room seemed to wait.
Alejandro Moretti stared at the entrance.
His poisoned body was barely holding together, but his mind was moving faster than ever.
His wife.
The message had said:
Keep Alejandro alive until she arrives.
Not kill him.
Not finish the job.
Keep him alive.
That detail bothered him more than the poison itself.
Because murder was simple.
A bullet.
A blade.
A poisoned drink.
Those were actions.
But keeping someone alive after poisoning them meant something else.
It meant someone wanted him awake.
Someone wanted him to see something.
Someone wanted him to suffer.
Victor held the phone tightly.
The confidence had returned to his face.
“Funny, isn’t it?”
Alejandro looked at him.
“What?”
Victor glanced around the study.
“This room was supposed to be your fortress.”
He slowly walked toward the fireplace.
“The one place nobody could enter.”
His eyes moved toward Emma.
“And yet tonight, everyone who matters walked right in.”
Emma hugged her stuffed rabbit.
She did not like the way Victor said that.
Everyone who matters.
Like people were pieces on a chessboard.
Her mother hated chess.
She said it was a game where people were treated like objects.
Emma thought Victor played that game too.
With real people.
The door opened.
Emma turned.
A woman stepped inside.
Elegant.
Calm.
Beautiful.
Her black coat rested perfectly over her shoulders.
Her dark hair was tied neatly behind her head.
She looked like someone walking into a business meeting.
Not someone entering a room where her husband was dying.
Clara Moretti.
Alejandro’s wife.
Emma knew her.
Everyone in the mansion knew her.
Mrs. Moretti was always kind to the staff.
She remembered birthdays.
She asked about people’s families.
She gave Emma books and toys.
She was the woman everyone described as gentle.
But tonight…
Something was different.
Clara looked at Alejandro lying on the floor.
And for one second…
Something flashed in her eyes.
Not sadness.
Not fear.
Relief.
Alejandro saw it.
And that hurt more than the poison.
“Clara…”
His voice cracked.
She closed the door behind her.
“I’m sorry, Alejandro.”
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed something inside him.
Because an apology was not a denial.
It was confirmation.
Emma looked between them.
“You knew?”
Clara looked at the little girl.
Her expression softened.
“Emma…”
“You knew he was hurt?”
Clara hesitated.
A hesitation was enough.
Emma stepped backward.
Her small mind struggled to understand.
The woman who brought her cookies.
The woman who smiled at her mother.
The woman who hugged her when she scraped her knee.
Was part of this?
Children often believe adults are divided into good people and bad people.
But Emma was learning something much harder.
Sometimes people could be both.
Clara looked at Victor.
“Where is the camera?”
Victor pointed.
“In her hands.”
Clara’s expression changed.
For the first time, she noticed the device.
“You found it?”
Emma nodded.
“It was hidden.”
Victor laughed softly.
“She found everything.”
Clara looked at Emma carefully.
Not with anger.
With concern.
That confused Emma.
If Clara was bad, why did she look worried?
Then Alejandro spoke.
“Why?”
One word.
A lifetime of pain inside it.
Clara looked at him.
The woman who had stood beside him for years.
The woman who had held his hand when Kiara died.
The woman who cried beside his hospital bed.
Now stood there as part of the betrayal.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.”
Alejandro’s expression hardened.
“But it did.”
Clara looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her eyes became wet.
“Because you would never listen.”
A bitter silence filled the room.
Alejandro stared.
“Listen to what?”
“The truth.”
Victor moved closer.
“She tried to tell you.”
Alejandro looked at him.
“You?”
Victor smiled.
“Yes.”
He looked around the room.
“You built an empire where everyone was afraid to speak honestly.”
His voice became colder.
“So people learned another way.”
Alejandro pushed himself slightly upward.
“What truth?”
Clara looked at him.
“The truth about Kiara.”
The name returned.
Like a knife turning.
Alejandro’s breathing changed.
“No.”
Clara swallowed.
“Yes.”
“No.”
“You need to hear it.”
Alejandro’s eyes became darker.
“My daughter died.”
Clara shook her head.
“She was taken from us.”
The words hit harder than anything else.
Emma looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Nobody answered.
Clara stepped closer.
“Three years ago, everyone believed Kiara’s car accident was caused by a drunk driver.”
Alejandro’s hands tightened.
“That man was arrested.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you saying?”
Clara looked at Victor.
Then back at Alejandro.
“That man was innocent.”
The room went silent.
The fire cracked.
The clock ticked.
Every sound felt louder.
Alejandro’s world shifted.
“No.”
“I found evidence.”
“Where?”
“In the original investigation file.”
Alejandro stared.
“The file was closed.”
“Because someone made sure it was closed.”
His eyes moved slowly toward Victor.
Then Clara continued.
“The brakes were damaged.”
Alejandro froze.
Not an accident.
Not random.
Someone had planned it.
“But why?”
His voice broke.
“Why would anyone hurt Kiara?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Victor spoke.
“Because of you.”
Alejandro looked at him.
Victor’s face was serious now.
No smile.
No arrogance.
Only years of anger.
“Everything you built had a price.”
Alejandro shook his head.
“You’re blaming me?”
“I’m telling you the truth.”
Victor stepped closer.
“You destroyed everyone around you while protecting your empire.”
“That doesn’t explain my daughter.”
“No.”
Victor looked at Clara.
“She was collateral damage.”
The word made Emma angry.
She did not understand everything.
But she understood that children were not collateral.
Children were children.
“You’re talking about her like she was a thing.”
Everyone looked at Emma.
Her voice was small.
But strong.
“She was a person.”
Nobody spoke.
Because a four-year-old girl had just said what three powerful adults refused to admit.
Clara looked away.
Victor looked uncomfortable.
Alejandro closed his eyes.
Because Emma was right.
Then suddenly…
The hidden camera in Emma’s hand made a sound.
Beep.
A new recording appeared.
Everyone froze.
Victor grabbed his phone.
“What?”
Emma looked at the device.
A message appeared on the tiny screen.
NEW FILE FOUND
DATE: OCTOBER 14, THREE YEARS AGO
Alejandro’s eyes widened.
October 14.
The day Kiara died.
Clara stepped closer.
“What is that?”
Emma pressed the button.
A video began playing.
The image was blurry.
Dark.
Security footage.
A parking garage.
A little girl’s car.
And standing beside it…
A person.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone recognized the person.
Even after three years.
Even through the poor quality.
Even through the darkness.
Alejandro whispered:
“No…”
The person in the video placed something under Kiara’s car.
Then looked directly into the camera.
As if they knew they were being watched.
As if they wanted someone to find this.
And the face appeared.
A face Alejandro never expected.
A face from his own family.
A face that made Clara cover her mouth.
Because the person who killed Kiara…
Was not Victor.
Was not Clara.
Was not an enemy.
It was someone Alejandro had spent his entire life protecting.
Someone who shared his blood.
The video froze.
Emma looked up.
“Who is that?”
Alejandro stared at the screen.
His voice barely existed.
“My father.”
The room went completely silent.
Because Alejandro Moretti’s dead father…
May you like
Was standing in the footage.
