Chapter 5: The Ghost From The Past

For a moment, nobody understood what they were seeing.

The video remained frozen.

A dark parking garage.

A damaged vehicle.

A figure standing beside a little girl’s car.

And the face of a man who should have been impossible to find.

Impossible to accuse.

Impossible to blame.

Because Angelo Moretti had been dead for twelve years.

Yet there he was.

Standing beside Kiara’s car.

Three years ago.

After his own death.

Emma looked at the screen.

Then at Alejandro.

“But you said he was dead.”

Alejandro did not answer.

His eyes remained locked on the image.

The man in the video.

His father.

The man who created the Moretti empire.

The man whose name alone could silence entire rooms.

Angelo Moretti.

A legend.

A monster.

A father.

A ghost.

“No…”

Alejandro whispered.

His fingers pressed against the marble floor.

“That’s impossible.”

Victor watched him carefully.

For the first time that night, he did not look like a man who had won.

He looked like a man who had been waiting years for this moment.

“You really believed he was gone?”

Alejandro slowly looked up.

“What did you know?”

Victor did not answer immediately.

That hesitation said everything.

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.”

Victor remained silent.

“You knew about my father.”

“Yes.”

The answer came quietly.

And somehow, that was worse than a lie.

Alejandro stared at his brother.

“You let me believe he was dead.”

Victor looked away.

“Because you were not ready.”

A bitter laugh escaped Alejandro.

“Not ready?”

His voice grew stronger.

“You poisoned me.”

“You were going to die anyway.”

“That was your excuse?”

“No.”

Victor stepped closer.

“That was your punishment.”

Emma looked between them.

Punishment.

Another word adults used when they wanted to explain cruelty.

She did not like it.

People always said they hurt others because they deserved it.

But hurting someone was still hurting someone.

Clara walked toward the desk.

Her face had lost all color.

“How did this file appear?”

Victor looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

“You didn’t put it there?”

“No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

Victor looked at Emma.

“She found something even I couldn’t find.”

Emma looked down at the camera.

She did not understand why everyone kept looking at her.

She had only opened a hidden box.

She had only tried to help a sick man.

But somehow, every door she opened revealed something darker.

Alejandro noticed something.

“Victor.”

His brother looked at him.

“Why would my father be alive?”

Nobody answered.

Because that was the real question.

Not who poisoned him.

Not who betrayed him.

Not who killed Kiara.

But how a dead man appeared in a video years after his death.

Then the mansion lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The security system made a strange sound.

A message appeared on the hidden camera.

EXTERNAL CONNECTION DETECTED

Victor immediately stepped forward.

“Give me that.”

Emma pulled it closer.

“No.”

Victor stopped.

Again.

The little girl refused him.

A tiny person standing in front of something powerful.

Alejandro watched.

And something strange happened.

For years, people obeyed him because they feared consequences.

But Emma?

She obeyed nobody.

She simply did what she believed was right.

Victor slowly lowered his hand.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“Do you know what that device is?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“It can put you in danger.”

Emma looked at Alejandro.

“He’s already in danger.”

Victor went quiet.

Clara looked at her.

“You care about him?”

Emma frowned.

“He was alone.”

That answer affected Alejandro more than he expected.

Because everyone around him wanted something.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

Respect.

But this child?

She wanted nothing.

She saw a person lying on the floor.

And she helped.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

For years, he had surrounded himself with people who saw him as a king.

But a four-year-old girl saw him as a human.

Then the camera played another sound.

A notification.

MESSAGE RECEIVED

Everyone looked.

A text appeared.

Only six words.

HE KNOWS YOU FOUND THE TRUTH.

Victor’s face changed.

“Who sent that?”

Alejandro looked at him.

“You tell me.”

Victor shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Another message appeared.

HE IS ALREADY INSIDE THE HOUSE.

Everyone froze.

Inside the house.

Not outside.

Not approaching.

Already inside.

Emma looked toward the door.

“Is someone here?”

No one answered.

Then…

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not rushing.

The person walking outside was not afraid.

They knew nobody could stop them.

Victor moved toward the door.

Alejandro tried to warn him.

“Wait.”

Victor stopped.

Because Alejandro heard something.

A familiar sound.

A walking cane.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The footsteps stopped outside the study.

Emma’s eyes widened.

The door handle moved.

Clara stepped backward.

“No…”

Victor whispered something Alejandro had never heard from him before.

Fear.

The door opened.

An old man stood there.

White hair.

Black coat.

A wooden cane in his hand.

A face that belonged to the past.

A face that should have been buried.

Alejandro stared.

His entire world collapsed.

“Father?”

Angelo Moretti looked around the room.

At Victor.

At Clara.

At Emma.

Then finally at Alejandro lying on the floor.

And he smiled.

Not a kind smile.

Not a happy smile.

A smile from someone who had been waiting a very long time.

“Hello, Alejandro.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Angelo looked at the poisoned wineglass.

And laughed softly.

“Still trusting the wrong people, I see.”

Alejandro’s blood ran cold.

“You died.”

Angelo tapped his cane against the floor.

“Did I?”

A silence.

Then he stepped inside.

“The problem with powerful men, my son…”

He closed the door behind him.

“…is that they always believe they know the whole story.”

His eyes moved toward Emma.

“And they never notice the smallest person in the room.”

Emma tightened her grip on the camera.

Because the old man was looking directly at her.

Not Alejandro.

Not Victor.

Her.

“You found my message.”

Emma swallowed.

“What message?”

Angelo smiled.

“The one I left for the person who would save my son.”

Alejandro’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Angelo looked at him.

“Yes, Alejandro.”

He lifted his cane slightly.

“Your entire family has been playing a game.”

A pause.

“And the only person who was never supposed to be part of it…”

His eyes returned to Emma.

May you like

“…was the little girl who just changed everything.”
