Chapter 13: The Enemy Without A Name

The mansion was no longer a home.

It was a battlefield.

Every screen in every hallway showed the same unfamiliar face.

The man who had spent years hiding behind Project Eclipse.

The man who had manipulated the Moretti family from the shadows.

The man who had been watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

Alejandro stood in the center of his own study, surrounded by people who had betrayed him, protected him, lied to him, and sacrificed everything for the truth.

And now…

All of them were facing the same enemy.

The man on the screen smiled.

“Do you know what I find fascinating about families like yours?”

Nobody answered.

The man continued.

“You spend your entire lives fighting each other.”

His eyes moved across the camera feed.

“Brother against brother.”

“Father against son.”

“Husband against wife.”

A pause.

“And you never notice the person standing outside the circle.”

Alejandro stared at the screen.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“You already know.”

“No.”

Alejandro’s voice became colder.

“I don’t.”

The man leaned closer to the camera.

“My name is Adrian Vale.”

Silence.

Angelo’s face changed.

Victor noticed.

“You know him.”

Angelo said nothing.

That was enough.

Alejandro looked at his father.

“Explain.”

Angelo remained silent.

“Explain!”

The old man finally spoke.

“Adrian was my partner.”

Everyone froze.

Partner.

Not enemy.

Not stranger.

Partner.

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“You built this with him?”

Angelo nodded.

“Years ago.”

“Why?”

Angelo looked at the screen.

“Because I believed power needed control.”

Adrian smiled.

“And I believed control required evolution.”

The words made Emma uncomfortable.

Evolution.

Control.

Those were words adults used when they wanted to do things they knew were wrong.

Adrian continued.

“Angelo wanted to build an empire.”

He laughed softly.

“I wanted to build something better.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“Better?”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s eyes moved toward Emma.

“A world where emotion does not interfere with decisions.”

Bruno immediately understood.

“No.”

Adrian smiled.

“You understand.”

Bruno’s expression darkened.

“You wanted to remove humanity.”

“Incorrect.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I wanted to remove weakness.”

Alejandro looked at Emma.

Then back at the screen.

“And you think a child is weakness?”

Adrian smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I think a child is proof.”

The room became silent.

Adrian continued.

“Project Eclipse was created to answer one question.”

“What question?”

“Can human compassion survive when placed against absolute power?”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

Emma was not an accident.

She was a result.

A test.

A symbol.

Adrian looked at Alejandro.

“Your daughter Kiara proved the answer was yes.”

Alejandro’s expression changed.

“Don’t say her name.”

Adrian ignored him.

“She changed you.”

A pause.

“She turned the most dangerous man in New York into a father.”

Alejandro’s hands tightened.

“So you killed her.”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“I did not kill her.”

Everyone stared.

“What?”

Adrian leaned back.

“Kiara was a complication.”

Angelo stepped forward.

“You ordered the operation.”

“Yes.”

The old man’s eyes became filled with anger.

“You destroyed everything.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

His voice became cold.

“I corrected your mistake.”

Angelo’s hand tightened around his cane.

“My mistake?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked toward Emma.

“You created two miracles.”

A pause.

“And you became attached to them.”

The words hit Angelo.

Because they were true.

The old man who claimed emotions were weakness had failed his own philosophy.

He cared.

He protected.

He loved.

Adrian continued.

“When Kiara showed the ability to change Alejandro, I knew the experiment had succeeded.”

“Then why kill her?”

Adrian’s expression became empty.

“Because one success was enough.”

Everyone froze.

Alejandro felt sick.

“One?”

Adrian looked at Emma.

“Emma was the final stage.”

The room went silent.

Bruno looked at the screen.

“You planned this from the beginning.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted both children.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian smiled.

“Because one would prove compassion.”

A pause.

“And the other would prove inheritance.”

Alejandro looked at Emma.

“No.”

Adrian continued.

“Emma carries the Moretti bloodline.”

“She carries the intelligence.”

“The adaptability.”

“The emotional response.”

He smiled.

“She is the perfect combination.”

Alejandro stepped forward.

“She is a child.”

Adrian’s expression did not change.

“She is a future.”

Alejandro’s voice became terrifying.

“She is not yours.”

The screens flickered.

Then the mansion doors opened.

A group of armed men entered the hallway.

Bruno looked at the security monitors.

“They’re inside.”

Victor immediately moved.

“How?”

Adrian answered through the speakers.

“You still don’t understand.”

A pause.

“I was never outside.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian smiled.

“I have been inside this organization for decades.”

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?”

The screen changed.

A list appeared.

Names.

Hundreds of names.

People connected to the Moretti empire.

Politicians.

Business owners.

Security officers.

Employees.

Then one name appeared highlighted.

BRUNO FERRARO

Everyone looked at Bruno.

Bruno froze.

“What?”

Adrian smiled.

“Your most loyal soldier.”

A pause.

“Your most trusted friend.”

Another pause.

“The man who spent twenty-five years serving two masters.”

Alejandro turned slowly.

“Bruno?”

Bruno looked shocked.

“No.”

Adrian laughed.

“You really don’t remember?”

The screen changed.

An old photograph appeared.

A young Bruno.

Standing beside Adrian.

Before he joined Alejandro.

Before the Moretti empire.

Before everything.

Alejandro stared.

Bruno’s face went pale.

“I was young.”

Nobody spoke.

Bruno looked at Alejandro.

“I didn’t know what he was planning.”

Adrian interrupted.

“But you helped build the foundation.”

The room became silent.

Alejandro looked at Bruno.

The man who had protected him for decades.

The man who had hidden secrets.

The man who had searched for the truth.

Maybe a victim.

Maybe a traitor.

Maybe both.

Then the mansion alarm changed.

A new message appeared.

TARGET ACQUIRED

Everyone looked around.

Adrian smiled.

“Thank you for bringing her to me.”

Alejandro immediately understood.

The target.

Emma.

He turned.

But she was gone.

The room froze.

“Emma?”

No answer.

Alejandro’s heart stopped.

“Emma!”

Bruno looked toward the open hallway.

A tiny pink backpack lay on the floor.

The stuffed rabbit was beside it.

And on the wall…

Written in red:
