Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden In The Photograph

Emily stared at the photograph on the library table.
She could not look away.
The image was old.
The edges were damaged.
The colors had faded with time.
But the faces were clear.
Alexander Blackwood.
And beside him…
Daniel.
Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.
“No.”
The word came out quietly.
Then louder.
“No.”
Daniel said nothing.
And that silence was worse than any explanation.
Emily slowly turned toward him.
“Tell me this isn’t real.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Then at Emily.
“I can explain.”
Her expression changed.
Those words.
The same words everyone used when they had hidden something.
Her mother.
Vanessa.
Everyone.
“Explain what?”
Her voice shook.
“Explain why you knew Alexander?”
Daniel took a step forward.
Emily immediately stepped back.
“Don’t.”
The pain in her eyes stopped him.
“I trusted you.”
Daniel looked away.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Emily held up the photograph.
“You knew everything.”
“I knew part of it.”
“Part?”
She laughed bitterly.
“You were investigating my family before you met me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Richard.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“And now I find out you knew Alexander too?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I should have told you.”
Emily stared at him.
“Yes.”
The answer was simple.
Cold.
“You should have.”
Marcus watched the two of them from the corner of the room.
He looked satisfied.
Not because he cared about Emily.
But because he had created exactly the chaos he wanted.
“Interesting, isn’t it?”
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
Marcus smiled.
“How quickly trust disappears when people learn the truth.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You’re enjoying this.”
Marcus shrugged.
“Because I know something you don’t.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Daniel wasn’t just Alexander’s friend.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“What does he mean?”
Daniel remained silent.
Marcus continued.
“Tell her.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Enough.”
Marcus laughed.
“Still protecting your secrets?”
Emily’s heart sank.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
And she saw it.
The hesitation.
That tiny moment.
The moment before someone reveals something they never wanted to say.
“I met Alexander when I was younger.”
Daniel finally admitted.
“How young?”
“Seventeen.”
Emily froze.
The same age she was when she lost her father.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“My father was assigned to protect him.”
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
Emily remembered.
Daniel’s father.
The security officer.
The man who betrayed her family.
“My father was not only protecting the Blackwood family.”
Daniel continued.
“He was protecting Alexander.”
“Why?”
“Because Alexander was the real threat to Vanessa’s inheritance.”
Emily looked confused.
“But why were you there?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because my father brought me with him.”
Marcus smiled.
“Tell her the rest.”
Daniel looked angry.
“Stop.”
“No.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“She deserves to know.”
Emily looked between them.
“Know what?”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“My father made a deal.”
“With who?”
“Vanessa.”
The room went silent.
Emily felt like she had been hit.
“What kind of deal?”
Daniel looked down.
“He agreed to hide Alexander’s existence.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Another betrayal.
Another person who chose power over people.
“My father helped erase him.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you knew.”
“I found out later.”
“When?”
“Years after.”
Emily stared at him.
“So when you came into this mansion…”
Her voice became quiet.
“You already knew my family had been destroyed by yours.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another lie.
“Then why?”
Daniel’s expression broke.
“Because I wanted to fix what my father did.”
Emily shook her head.
“You don’t fix something by hiding the truth again.”
Daniel had no answer.
Marcus walked toward the door.
His work was done.
But before leaving, he turned around.
“One more thing.”
Nobody moved.
“Alexander is alive.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Daniel looked shocked.
Marcus smiled.
“You thought the missing heir disappeared?”
He shook his head.
“He has been closer than you think.”
Emily stared.
“Where is he?”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Ask him.”
Then Marcus left.
The library became silent.
Emily turned slowly.
“Daniel.”
He said nothing.
“Where is Alexander?”
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Emily’s heart sank.
“You know.”
A long pause.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Yes.”
The next hour passed like a storm.
Emily sat in the library while Daniel finally told her everything.
Years ago, Alexander had disappeared from the public eye.
But he had not vanished.
He had been living under another identity.
Hidden.
Protected.
Waiting.
“Why didn’t he come back?”
Emily asked.
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because he believed Vanessa would kill him.”
Emily was silent.
“She had already tried once.”
“What?”
Daniel nodded.
“Alexander discovered what Richard had done.”
“About the inheritance?”
“About everything.”
The lies.
The corruption.
The manipulation.
“He had proof.”
Emily looked at him.
“And Vanessa wanted that proof destroyed.”
“Yes.”
“So where is he now?”
Daniel hesitated.
Emily noticed.
“Daniel.”
Finally, he answered.
“He is in this city.”
Her eyes widened.
“Here?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Daniel looked away.
“Six months.”
Emily stood.
“Six months?”
Her anger returned.
“You knew he was here for six months?”
“I was trying to find the right time.”
“The right time?”
Her voice rose.
“How many more secrets are you waiting to reveal?”
Daniel looked hurt.
But Emily continued.
“I don’t need someone protecting me.”
She pointed at the photograph.
“I need someone telling me the truth.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“You’re right.”
For the first time, he did not defend himself.
He simply accepted it.
Later that night, Emily stood outside the mansion.
The air was cold.
The garden lights illuminated the path.
She felt exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Every answer created three more questions.
She heard footsteps behind her.
Her mother.
Sarah stood beside her.
“You hate me.”
Emily looked forward.
“I don’t know what I feel.”
“That’s fair.”
A long silence followed.
Then Sarah said:
“There is something Daniel doesn’t know.”
Emily turned.
“What?”
Sarah looked toward the mansion.
“Alexander was not the only person Richard hid.”
Emily frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Sarah reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small key.
A key Emily had seen before.
The silver key from the wooden box.
“This opens a place your father wanted you to find.”
Emily stared.
“Where?”
Sarah looked at her.
“Your old house.”
Emily’s breathing stopped.
“The house where my father died?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father left something there.”
Emily took the key.
“What?”
Sarah’s voice became barely a whisper.
“The proof that Vanessa was not acting alone.”
A chill moved through Emily.
“Who was helping her?”
Sarah looked at her daughter.
And answered with a name.
A name that made Emily realize the betrayal was much deeper than she imagined.
“Richard Blackwood.”
Emily froze.
Because if Sarah was telling the truth…
May you like
Then the man everyone thought was a victim…
Had been the person who started everything.
