Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Mask

Emily stared at the letter.
The words were simple.
Only one sentence.
But they carried the weight of a warning written by a dying man.
"If Vanessa finds Emily before she knows the truth, she will try to destroy her."
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
Her father had known.
He had predicted everything.
The necklace.
The accusation.
The humiliation.
Everything.
But there was one thing she could not understand.
Why had he warned her about Vanessa…
And then warned her about someone else?
Someone she trusted.
Someone close.
Someone who had been standing beside her.
Daniel.
The room suddenly felt different.
A few minutes earlier, Daniel had been the person who defended her when everyone turned against her.
He was the person who believed the security footage.
The person who searched for answers.
The person who brought her closer to the truth.
But now…
Emily wondered if he was also part of the mystery.
Daniel noticed the change in her expression.
“What happened?”
Emily folded the letter quickly.
“Nothing.”
He looked at her.
She had never been good at hiding emotions.
Not from him.
“Emily.”
She avoided his eyes.
“Who else knew about my father’s secrets?”
Daniel became quiet.
The question was unexpected.
“Why are you asking?”
“Just answer.”
He studied her for a moment.
Then he said:
“Very few people.”
“Who?”
“Your father. Richard. Marcus. Vanessa.”
He paused.
“And me.”
Emily’s heart tightened.
“You?”
Daniel nodded.
“I told you. I have been investigating the Blackwood family for years.”
“Why?”
The question came out sharper than she intended.
Daniel looked surprised.
“Because my father worked for Richard Blackwood.”
Emily froze.
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
“Doing what?”
Daniel looked away.
“Security.”
The room became silent.
Emily remembered.
The man who watched the mansion.
The cameras.
The evidence.
The information.
Daniel had access to everything.
“You knew about the Blackwood family before you met me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about my inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“You knew who Vanessa was.”
“Yes.”
Each answer felt heavier.
Emily took a step back.
“Then why did you never tell me?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
But no words came.
Because there was no easy answer.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Emily shook her head.
“Everyone says that.”
Her voice cracked.
“My father said that. My mother said that. Everyone keeps saying they hid things because they wanted to protect me.”
She looked at him.
“But nobody asked me if I wanted the truth.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Emily’s anger was not loud.
It was worse.
It was the anger of someone who had been betrayed too many times.
“I’m sorry.”
But this time, those words did not help.
Emily walked away.
She left the archive room without looking back.
Daniel stayed behind.
He knew he had lost her trust.
And he understood why.
Trust was not a door that could simply be unlocked again.
Once broken, it became a room full of sharp pieces.
He looked at the letter Emily had left on the table.
The warning from her father.
"The person you trust most may be the one who knows how to hurt you."
Daniel whispered:
“Who were you warning her about?”
Because deep down, he knew something.
The message might not have been about him.
It might have been about someone else.
Someone much closer.
That night, Emily returned to the room where she had spent two years living as a simple employee.
But she no longer felt like it belonged to her.
The uniform hanging on the chair.
The small bed.
The old suitcase.
Everything represented the life she had built after losing everything.
A life based on running away.
She opened the suitcase.
Hidden underneath her clothes was a small wooden box.
The only thing she had kept from her childhood.
Inside was a necklace.
Not a diamond necklace.
Not something valuable.
Just a simple silver pendant.
Her father gave it to her when she was young.
“Never forget who you are,” he had told her.
At the time, she thought he meant her personality.
Her kindness.
Her courage.
Now she wondered if he meant something else.
Her blood.
Her family.
Her identity.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
Emily quickly closed the box.
“Who is it?”
A voice answered.
“It's me.”
Daniel.
She almost refused to open the door.
But something inside her told her she needed answers.
When she opened it, Daniel stood there alone.
“I owe you the truth.”
Emily crossed her arms.
“You owe me more than that.”
“I know.”
He handed her a folder.
“What is this?”
“Everything my father left behind.”
Emily looked at him.
“Why now?”
“Because I realized something.”
“What?”
“My father was not protecting Richard.”
Daniel paused.
“He was protecting you.”
Emily opened the folder.
Inside were old reports.
Photographs.
And one document.
A security report from the night her father died.
She read the first line.
"Unauthorized vehicle detected near Carter residence."
Her hands froze.
There were photos attached.
A black car.
A license plate.
A person entering the house.
Emily looked closer.
Then she saw it.
A familiar symbol.
A Blackwood family emblem.
“This car belonged to Richard.”
Daniel nodded.
“But there is something else.”
He pointed to the bottom of the report.
A name.
The person who requested the security operation.
Emily read it.
Her face turned pale.
Because it was not Vanessa.
It was not Marcus.
It was someone she never expected.
“Your father?”
Daniel nodded.
“My father believed someone inside the Blackwood family was planning something.”
Emily looked confused.
“My father asked for protection?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he die?”
Daniel’s expression became dark.
“Because the person assigned to protect him betrayed him.”
Emily stared at him.
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“My father.”
The room became silent.
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
“My father was the one who leaked the information.”
Her eyes widened.
“Then why are you helping me?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because before he died, my father left me a message.”
“What message?”
Daniel looked at her.
“He told me he made the biggest mistake of his life.”
Emily waited.
“He said the Blackwood family destroyed your family.”
A tear appeared in Daniel’s eyes.
“And he said I needed to fix what he broke.”
For the first time, Emily saw something in Daniel.
Not confidence.
Not control.
Regret.
A burden he had carried alone.
Before Emily could respond, the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
Darkness covered everything.
Then came a sound.
A crash downstairs.
Daniel immediately turned.
“Stay here.”
Emily grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“Emily, it’s dangerous.”
She looked at him.
“I’m tired of hiding.”
The two moved through the dark hallway.
When they reached the main foyer, they saw the broken glass door.
Someone had entered.
On the floor was a piece of paper.
Daniel picked it up.
Only four words were written.
"Stop searching for answers."
Emily looked around.
Then she noticed something else.
A shadow outside the window.
Someone watching them.
Daniel ran toward the door.
But the person disappeared into the darkness.
Emily picked up the paper.
On the back was another message.
A message that made her blood turn cold.
"Ask your mother why she really left."
Emily looked at her mother’s empty room upstairs.
Because suddenly, the biggest question was no longer about Vanessa.
It was about the woman who had just returned.
The woman who claimed she was protecting her.
The woman who disappeared for fifteen years.
Emily finally understood.
The truth had many layers.

And every time she removed one…
Another darker secret was waiting underneath.
