Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden In The Letter

Emily read the final line again.

Then again.

As if staring at the words long enough would somehow make them disappear.

But they remained.

The name was still there.

Vanessa Blackwood.

The person her father warned her about.

The person who had tried to frame her.

The person who had spent years pretending they had never met.

Emily slowly lowered the letter.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

Daniel watched her carefully.

“What part?”

“My father knew Vanessa?”

Daniel nodded.

“Apparently.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“My father was careful. He never let strangers near me. He never trusted wealthy people. He would have told me.”

“Unless he was trying to protect you.”

Emily looked at him.

“By hiding everything?”

Daniel had no answer.

Because she was right.

Secrets could protect someone.

But they could also destroy them.

Emily placed the letter back on the table.

Her hands were shaking.

“All these years…”

Her voice cracked.

“I thought my father died because he was unlucky.”

She looked at Daniel.

“I thought our family lost everything because of circumstances.”

Daniel remained silent.

“But now you’re telling me someone caused it?”

“Yes.”

“And that person was Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Emily walked toward the window.

Outside, the mansion gardens were perfectly maintained.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

Almost unreal.

It was strange how a place could look so perfect while hiding so many ugly truths.

“My father trusted Richard Blackwood.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Maybe more than trusted.”

Emily turned around.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel pointed at the picture.

“They were partners.”

Emily looked confused.

“Partners?”

“There are records showing your father helped Richard build his first major company.”

She stared at him.

“My father was involved in that?”

“Yes.”

Daniel opened another file.

“Before Richard became famous, your father was one of the people who helped him secure investors.”

Emily picked up the document.

She had never seen any of this.

Her father had always told her he was just an ordinary businessman.

But he had not been ordinary.

Not at all.

“Why would he hide this from me?”

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Because something happened.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“Your father discovered something.”

“About Richard?”

Daniel nodded.

“And about the Blackwood family.”

Emily felt a cold feeling in her stomach.

“What did he discover?”

Daniel turned another page.

A report.

Old.

Partially damaged.

But one sentence was still visible.

"Financial records indicate unauthorized transfers from Blackwood Holdings."

Emily frowned.

“Someone was stealing?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Daniel pointed to another name.

Emily read it.

Her expression changed.

Marcus Vale.

The man from the night her father died.

“He worked for Richard.”

“Yes.”

“And he was stealing from him?”

“According to these documents.”

Emily slowly sat down.

Everything was becoming clearer.

But at the same time, more confusing.

“So my father discovered Marcus was stealing.”

“Yes.”

“And then he died.”

Daniel nodded.

Emily looked down.

The truth was beginning to form.

But it was still incomplete.

“What about Vanessa?”

Daniel looked serious.

“She may have known.”

Emily closed her eyes.

The memory of Vanessa’s smile returned.

The confidence.

The cruelty.

The way she had looked at Emily like she was nothing.

“She knew.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“You’re certain?”

Emily nodded.

“She didn’t look surprised when the necklace was found.”

Daniel thought about it.

“She expected the accusation to work.”

“Yes.”

“She expected everyone to believe you.”

Emily looked at him.

“Because she knew exactly how people would see me.”

The room fell silent.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Yes?”

His expression changed.

“Where?”

He listened.

Then ended the call.

“We need to leave.”

Emily stood.

“What happened?”

“Someone broke into the archive room.”

Her heart sank.

“The documents?”

Daniel nodded.

“Someone is trying to destroy the evidence.”

They moved quickly through the mansion.

When they reached the archive room, two security guards were already there.

The door had been forced open.

Inside, papers were scattered everywhere.

Old files had been pulled from shelves.

Someone had searched the room.

Daniel walked in slowly.

“This wasn’t random.”

Emily followed.

“How do you know?”

“Because they ignored expensive items.”

He pointed around.

“The only thing they touched was information.”

Emily looked around.

Then she noticed something.

A drawer.

Half open.

She walked toward it.

Inside was a small black notebook.

Daniel immediately stopped her.

“Don’t touch it.”

“Why?”

“Because if someone left it here, there’s a reason.”

They carefully examined it.

The notebook contained handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Payments.

And one name appeared again and again.

Vanessa.

Emily’s face became pale.

“She was involved.”

Daniel flipped through the pages.

“Not just involved.”

He stopped.

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel showed her the final page.

At the bottom was a signature.

A signature that belonged to Richard Blackwood.

And beneath it was a sentence.

"Vanessa knows the truth. If anything happens to me, do not trust her."

Emily felt like the ground disappeared beneath her.

Richard Blackwood had known.

He had known his own daughter was dangerous.

But why?

Why would he leave clues instead of exposing her?

Unless he was afraid.

Unless he knew he would not survive long enough to reveal everything.

Suddenly, a sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Someone was outside.

Daniel immediately turned off the lights.

“Stay quiet.”

Emily held her breath.

The door slowly opened.

A shadow appeared.

Someone entered.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Emily could hear her own heartbeat.

The person moved toward the desk.

Then stopped.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The figure froze.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then the person raised their hands.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

A familiar voice.

Emily’s eyes widened.

She knew that voice.

Impossible.

The figure stepped into the light.

And Emily felt all the air leave her lungs.

Because standing in front of her was someone who should have been dead.

Someone connected to the night her father died.

Someone who held the final piece of the mystery.

Her mother.

“Emily…”

The woman whispered.

“I’m sorry I left you.”

Emily stared at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

Because for fifteen years, she believed her mother was gone forever.

But she was alive.

And she had been hiding.

The woman looked at the notebook in Daniel’s hand.

Then at Emily.

“You found it.”

Emily could barely speak.

“Why?”

Her mother’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because the truth about your father’s death is much worse than you think.”

The mansion fell silent.

And for the first time in years…

May you like

Emily was standing face to face with the person who knew everything.

But the truth she was about to hear would change the way she saw her entire family forever.
