Chapter 3: The Man From The Night That Changed Everything

Emily could not move.

The photograph in Daniel’s hand seemed to weigh more than anything she had ever held.

For years, she had forced herself to forget that face.

She had buried the memory so deeply that sometimes she wondered if it had all been a nightmare.

But it was not.

The man in the picture was real.

And he was here.

Watching her.

Waiting for something.

“Emily,” Daniel said carefully. “Who is he?”

Her lips parted, but no words came out.

She looked at the photograph again.

The older face.

The cold eyes.

The same expression she remembered from that terrible night.

A night she had spent years trying to erase.

“He was at my house,” she finally whispered.

“When?”

“The night my father died.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Are you sure?”

Emily nodded slowly.

“I was seventeen.”

Her voice became quieter.

“It was raining that night.”

The memories came back without permission.

The sound of thunder.

The broken glass.

Her father shouting.

A stranger’s voice.

Then silence.

The kind of silence that changed a person forever.

“My father told me to hide,” Emily said.

Daniel listened carefully.

“He locked me inside the closet under the stairs. He told me not to make a sound.”

Her hands began trembling.

“I heard people arguing.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

She closed her eyes.

“But I remember that man.”

Daniel looked at the picture.

“His name is Marcus Vale.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“You know him?”

Daniel nodded.

“I’ve heard of him.”

“Who is he?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“He used to work for Richard Blackwood.”

Emily froze.

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

The pieces began connecting.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“My father knew Richard Blackwood?”

Daniel looked at the documents again.

“That’s what it seems like.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She stepped away.

“My father never told me anything about powerful people. He was just…”

She stopped.

Just a normal man.

Just a loving father.

Just someone who tried to protect her.

But now, everything she believed about her past was changing.

Daniel noticed her struggle.

“Emily, your father may have been protecting you.”

“From what?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because neither of them knew.

The next morning, the mansion was no longer the same.

The story about Vanessa’s deception had spread.

The guests who had accused Emily avoided looking at her.

Some apologized.

Some pretended nothing had happened.

But Emily noticed something.

People were not truly sorry.

They were embarrassed.

There was a difference.

And she understood that now.

While she cleaned the dining room, she heard voices coming from the private office.

Vanessa.

And another person.

Emily stopped.

She recognized Vanessa’s angry voice immediately.

“You said she would never find out.”

A man replied.

“She wasn’t supposed to become a problem.”

Emily slowly moved closer.

The office door was slightly open.

She could hear them clearly.

“She was supposed to be arrested,” Vanessa said.

“Then the inheritance would be questioned.”

The man answered calmly.

“But Daniel ruined everything.”

Emily’s heart raced.

Daniel was right.

The necklace was never the real plan.

It was only the first step.

Vanessa continued.

“We need another way.”

The man sighed.

“You’re getting emotional.”

“I am not emotional.”

“You slapped her in front of everyone.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She deserved it.”

Emily felt a wave of anger.

Not because Vanessa hated her.

But because Vanessa truly believed she deserved to be destroyed.

The man continued.

“If Emily discovers the truth about her father, everything collapses.”

Emily froze.

Her father.

Again.

Why was everyone afraid of what her father knew?

She leaned closer.

Then the floor creaked.

The voices inside stopped.

Emily immediately stepped back.

Too late.

The office door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her eyes widened when she saw Emily.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“How much did you hear?”

Emily said nothing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You really should have stayed invisible.”

Those words hit harder than an insult.

Because they confirmed everything.

Vanessa had never seen Emily as a person.

Only as an obstacle.

“What did my father know?” Emily asked.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Emily saw it.

Fear.

“You don’t know anything about your father.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You think Daniel can protect you?”

Emily looked directly at her.

“I think the truth can.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“The truth?”

She stepped closer.

“Your father died because he believed he could fight people more powerful than him.”

Emily felt her chest tighten.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“It means you should learn from his mistake.”

Before Emily could respond, Daniel appeared behind her.

“Vanessa.”

His voice was sharp.

Vanessa immediately stepped away.

The moment disappeared.

But Emily knew.

She had seen it.

Vanessa was afraid.

And fear only existed when there was something to lose.

That afternoon, Daniel took Emily to a secure room inside the mansion.

On the table was an old wooden box.

“I found this in the mansion’s storage area.”

Emily looked at it.

“Why would it be here?”

Daniel opened the box.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

And a small silver key.

Emily picked up the first photograph.

Her hands froze.

It showed her father.

Standing beside Richard Blackwood.

They were not strangers.

They looked like friends.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

"Two fathers. One promise. Protect the children."

Emily’s breathing became uneven.

“What children?”

Daniel picked up another letter.

The envelope was old.

But the name written on it was clear.

Emily.

Her fingers trembled.

“That was written to me?”

“Yes.”

“But I never received it.”

Daniel looked at the sealed envelope.

“Because someone stopped you from getting it.”

Emily slowly opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her father’s handwriting.

The first sentence made her heart break.

"My dear Emily, if you are reading this, then I am no longer there to protect you."

Tears filled her eyes.

She continued reading.

"My daughter, there are things I hid from you because knowing the truth would put you in danger."

Emily covered her mouth.

The letter continued.

"Never trust the Blackwood family completely. Not even the ones who claim to love you."

Her eyes moved to the next line.

And then she saw the sentence that changed everything.

"The person responsible for destroying our family is someone you know."

Emily stopped breathing.

Someone she knew.

Someone close.

Someone who had been near her all along.

Daniel looked at her.

“What does it say?”

Emily slowly lowered the letter.

Her voice shook.

“My father knew who betrayed us.”

The room became silent.

“Who?”

Emily looked at the final line.

A single name.

A name that she never expected.

A name that made her entire world collapse again.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel stared at her.

But Emily shook her head.

“No…”

She looked at the letter.

“This can’t be right.”

Because if her father was telling the truth…

Then Vanessa had not started trying to destroy Emily yesterday.

She had been trying for years.

May you like

And the worst part was…

Emily had been unknowingly living beside the person who ruined her life.
