Chapter 5: The Mother Who Disappeared

Emily could not breathe.
The woman standing in front of her was impossible.
For years, she had lived with one painful truth.
Her mother was gone.
Not missing.
Not hiding.
Gone.
That was what everyone told her.
That was what she forced herself to believe.
But now, standing in the dark archive room of the mansion, surrounded by the secrets of the Blackwood family, Emily was looking at the face she had spent half her life trying to remember.
“Mom…”
The word escaped her lips before she even realized she had said it.
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
She took a small step forward.
But Emily stepped back.
The happiness she expected to feel never came.
Only confusion.
Only pain.
Only questions.
“Where were you?”
Her mother froze.
Emily’s voice became louder.
“Where were you all these years?”
Daniel remained silent beside them.
He understood this was not his conversation.
This was a wound that had never healed.
“I searched for you,” Emily whispered.
Her mother lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“You know?”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“You know I spent years thinking I lost both of you?”
Her mother looked like every word hurt.
“I wanted to come back.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Silence.
A painful silence.
Finally, her mother answered.
“Because I was afraid.”
Emily stared at her.
“Afraid of what?”
Her mother looked at the notebook on the table.
“Of the same people who destroyed your father.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?”
The woman looked at him.
“Marcus Vale.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“But Marcus worked for Richard Blackwood.”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa?”
The woman’s face became serious.
“She was part of it.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Hearing it from someone else made it real.
Not a suspicion.
Not a theory.
The truth.
“My father trusted them.”
Her mother nodded.
“He trusted Richard.”
“Then why did Richard’s daughter betray him?”
Her mother walked slowly toward the table.
“Because Vanessa believed she deserved everything Richard built.”
She touched the old photograph.
“Richard had two families.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
“Not two wives.”
Her mother shook her head.
“Two legacies.”
She pointed at the photograph of Richard and Emily’s father.
“Your father helped Richard create his empire. They built everything together.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“But later?”
“Later, Richard became afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing control.”
Her mother looked at Emily.
“Your father discovered that Richard had hidden financial problems.”
Emily looked confused.
“But Richard was one of the richest men in the world.”
“Publicly.”
Her mother opened the notebook.
“Privately, things were different.”
She pointed to the records.
“Richard’s company was losing money. Marcus helped cover it up.”
Daniel studied the documents.
“So Marcus was manipulating the finances.”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa knew?”
Her mother nodded.
“She knew everything.”
Emily looked at the notebook.
“Then why didn’t my father expose them?”
Her mother’s expression changed.
“Because he tried.”
A chill moved through Emily.
“What happened?”
Her mother looked at her daughter.
“The night your father died…”
She stopped.
For a moment, she looked like she was back there.
Reliving every second.
“He had planned to meet a lawyer.”
“A lawyer?”
“Yes. He wanted to reveal everything.”
Daniel asked:
“Did he have proof?”
Her mother nodded.
“He had copies of the financial records.”
Emily remembered the letter.
The warnings.
The fear.
“What happened that night?”
Her mother took a deep breath.
“Marcus found out.”
The room became silent.
“He came to our house.”
Emily’s face changed.
She remembered.
The rain.
The shouting.
The fear.
“He demanded the documents.”
Her mother continued.
“Your father refused.”
“And then?”
Her mother’s voice became weak.
“Then everything changed.”
Emily looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Marcus didn’t come alone.”
Emily felt her heart stop.
“Who was with him?”
Her mother looked directly at her.
“Vanessa.”
The answer hurt even though Emily expected it.
She had hoped somehow Vanessa was not involved.
She had hoped there was another explanation.
But there was none.
“She was there?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted the documents.”
Emily shook her head.
“She was willing to hurt my father for money?”
Her mother looked away.
“It wasn’t just money.”
“What else?”
“She was afraid your father would reveal something else.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“What?”
Her mother hesitated.
Then she said:
“The truth about Richard’s first child.”
The room became completely still.
Daniel frowned.
“First child?”
Emily looked confused.
“Vanessa wasn’t Richard’s only daughter?”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Her mother looked at Emily.
And the answer was almost impossible to accept.
“You.”
Emily felt frozen.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My father was not Richard’s son.”
“No.”
“Then how?”
Her mother sat down.
“Your father was Richard’s closest friend. But before Richard became powerful, before Vanessa was born, there was another relationship.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“What relationship?”
Her mother looked at the old photograph.
“Your grandmother.”
Emily felt a strange fear.
“My grandmother?”
“Richard’s mother.”
Daniel looked shocked.
Emily could barely process it.
“She was involved with your grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“And they had a child?”
Her mother nodded.
“Your father.”
The truth hit like a wave.
Emily sat down.
“My father was Richard’s brother?”
“Half-brother.”
Everything suddenly changed.
The inheritance.
The secrets.
Vanessa’s hatred.
Emily was not just a random housekeeper.
She was connected to the Blackwood family.
A hidden branch of a powerful bloodline.
Her father had not just been Richard’s friend.
He had been his family.
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“That explains why Richard changed his will.”
Emily looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“He wasn’t leaving money to a stranger.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“He was leaving it to his brother’s daughter.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
All her life, she thought she had been forgotten.
But the truth was different.
Someone had known.
Someone had remembered.
Someone had tried to protect her.
Her mother reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“There is one more thing.”
Emily looked at it.
“What is that?”
“Your father’s final message.”
Emily took the envelope with trembling hands.
On the front was her name.
But underneath it was another sentence.
"If Vanessa finds Emily before she knows the truth, she will try to destroy her."
Emily looked up.
Her mother whispered:
“Your father knew this day would come.”
Emily slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only a few words were written.
But they changed everything.
"Emily, the person you trust most may be the one who knows how to hurt you."
Her hands trembled.
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?”
Emily looked at the message.
Then at Daniel.
A terrible thought entered her mind.
Because there was only one person besides her mother and father who had been helping her.
One person who knew everything.
One person who had access to every secret.
Daniel.
The room suddenly felt colder.
May you like
And for the first time since the truth began to emerge…
Emily wondered if she was truly safe.
