Chapter 2: The Name She Tried to Forget

Emily did not sleep that night.

The mansion was usually a place filled with noise.

The footsteps of servants walking through the halls.

The sound of guests laughing during dinner.

The distant music coming from the ballroom.

But tonight, everything felt different.

Every corner of the mansion seemed to hold a secret.

Emily sat on the edge of her small bed in the employee quarters, staring at the reflection of herself in the dark window.

The woman looking back at her seemed like a stranger.

A woman who had spent years trying to disappear.

A woman who had changed her name.

Changed her life.

Changed everything about herself.

And yet somehow, the past had found her.

She touched her cheek carefully.

The pain from Vanessa’s slap had faded, but the memory remained.

She remembered the way people looked at her.

Not like a person.

Like a criminal.

That was what scared her the most.

Not Vanessa.

Not the necklace.

Not even the humiliation.

It was the fact that everyone had believed the worst about her so quickly.

Because deep down, Emily knew why.

People saw what they expected to see.

A housekeeper.

A poor girl.

Someone without influence.

Someone who could easily be blamed.

She closed her eyes.

For years, she had accepted being invisible.

But now she wondered if being invisible had ever truly protected her.

A knock suddenly interrupted her thoughts.

Emily looked toward the door.

Nobody visited employee rooms this late.

“Emily?”

It was Daniel.

She stood immediately.

When she opened the door, Daniel was standing there holding a folder.

His expression was serious.

More serious than before.

“What happened?” Emily asked.

Daniel looked around the hallway before speaking.

“Can I come in?”

Emily stepped aside.

He entered and placed the folder on the small table.

“What is that?”

“Information about Vanessa.”

Emily frowned.

“I thought we were talking about me.”

“We are.”

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were several documents.

Photographs.

Old newspaper articles.

Records.

Emily stared at the papers.

“What is this?”

Daniel pointed to one photograph.

It showed Vanessa years younger, standing beside an older man at a charity event.

“That man is Richard Blackwood.”

Emily recognized the name.

Everyone did.

Richard Blackwood had been one of the richest businessmen in the country.

A man whose company controlled hotels, luxury properties, and financial investments around the world.

But he had died seven years earlier.

“What does he have to do with Vanessa?”

Daniel looked at her.

“She was his daughter.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“I know that.”

“Do you know he had another daughter?”

The question froze her.

Emily looked confused.

“No.”

Daniel turned another page.

A birth record.

A photograph.

A name.

Emily’s breathing stopped.

Because the name on the paper was not unfamiliar.

It was a name she had not heard in years.

A name she had buried.

A name connected to the life she abandoned.

“Emily Carter.”

Her fingers became cold.

“No.”

Daniel watched her carefully.

“You know that name.”

She stepped backward.

“That’s not possible.”

“Emily…”

“That’s not me.”

Her voice became defensive.

But Daniel noticed something.

She was not confused.

She was afraid.

“You changed your name,” Daniel said softly.

Emily said nothing.

“You left your old life behind.”

The silence was enough.

Daniel placed the document down.

“Your real name isn’t Emily Carter.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Stop.”

“Your real name is…”

“Stop!”

Her voice echoed through the small room.

For a moment, Daniel said nothing.

Emily covered her face with both hands.

She had spent years running from that name.

Years pretending that person no longer existed.

But now it was standing in front of her again.

“My father died,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“I know.”

“My family lost everything.”

“I know.”

“I was alone.”

“I know.”

Emily looked up.

“How?”

Daniel slowly opened another file.

“Because Vanessa knew.”

The room became silent.

“She knew who you were from the beginning.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”

He pulled out another document.

“This was found in Vanessa’s private records.”

Emily read the first line.

Her face changed.

It was a message.

A handwritten note.

And the words were clear.

"Find her. Make sure nobody believes her."

Emily felt a cold wave move through her body.

“She planned everything.”

Daniel nodded.

“But why me?”

Daniel looked at the papers again.

“There is one thing I haven’t told you.”

Emily waited.

“Richard Blackwood left behind an inheritance.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Daniel hesitated.

“His will was changed shortly before his death.”

Emily felt her heartbeat increase.

“Changed to whose name?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Yours.”

The words felt impossible.

Emily laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too unbelievable.

“No.”

“Emily…”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“My father was a normal man. We didn’t have anything.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Why would someone like Richard Blackwood leave money to me?”

“That is what nobody understands.”

Emily looked at the documents.

A lifetime of memories suddenly felt unstable.

The small apartment where she grew up.

The nights her father worked until exhaustion.

The day everything disappeared.

The day she lost her family.

All those memories were real.

But now there was another story hidden underneath.

A story someone had tried to erase.

“Vanessa wants the inheritance,” Daniel said.

Emily looked at him.

“So she framed me.”

“Yes.”

“She wanted everyone to think I was a criminal.”

“Yes.”

“And then what?”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“She was planning to challenge your identity legally.”

Emily felt sick.

“She wanted to prove I wasn’t the rightful heir.”

Daniel nodded.

“But there’s something strange.”

“What?”

“She didn’t just want the money.”

Emily frowned.

“What else could she want?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Your father left behind something else.”

Emily waited.

“A secret.”

The word hung in the air.

“A secret that could destroy the Blackwood family.”

Emily felt a chill.

“What secret?”

Daniel closed the folder.

“I don’t know yet.”

Then his phone buzzed.

He checked the message.

His face immediately changed.

“What?”

Daniel showed her the screen.

A photograph.

Taken just hours earlier.

It showed Emily entering the mansion.

But behind her, standing in the shadows near the gate…

Was a man watching her.

Emily recognized him instantly.

Her blood ran cold.

Because she had seen that face before.

Years ago.

On the worst night of her life.

“That’s impossible,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“You know him?”

Emily slowly nodded.

“He was there the night my father died.”

The room became completely silent.

A man who was supposed to be gone had returned.

A secret buried for years had started to rise.

And Vanessa’s plan to destroy Emily had accidentally opened a door that should have stayed closed.

Because the truth about the Blackwood family was not just about money.

May you like

It was about betrayal.

And someone had been waiting years for Emily to come back.
