Chapter 7: The Mother’s Hidden Sin

The message stayed in Emily’s mind all night.
"Ask your mother why she really left."
Four words.
But they felt heavier than any accusation Vanessa had ever thrown at her.
Emily had spent years imagining her mother.
Sometimes she imagined her walking through the front door.
Sometimes she imagined hearing her voice again.
Sometimes she imagined that there was a reasonable explanation.
A reason why a mother would leave her seventeen-year-old daughter alone after losing her father.
She had created a thousand possibilities.
But she never imagined the truth could hurt more than the absence.
Now she had to ask the question she had been avoiding.
Why did her mother leave?
And why did she return now?
The next morning, Emily found her mother sitting in the mansion’s small garden.
The sun was rising slowly over the trees.
For a moment, Emily simply watched her.
This woman looked older than the mother in her memories.
There were more lines around her eyes.
More sadness.
More exhaustion.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret too heavy to put down.
“You knew I would find out eventually.”
Her mother did not turn around.
“Yes.”
Emily walked closer.
“Then why did you come back?”
Her mother remained silent.
Emily’s voice became colder.
“Was it because Vanessa was exposed?”
“No.”
“Was it because Daniel found the evidence?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Her mother finally looked at her.
“Because Marcus found you.”
Emily froze.
“You knew?”
Her mother nodded.
“I knew he had been searching for you.”
“Then why didn’t you warn me?”
Her mother looked down.
“Because I was trying to keep you away from this world.”
Emily laughed quietly.
“This world?”
She looked around the mansion.
“The world my father was born into?”
“Yes.”
“The world you knew about?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
Because Emily realized something.
Her mother had known everything.
Not some things.
Everything.
“You knew who Richard Blackwood was.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the inheritance.”
“Yes.”
Each answer felt like another piece of trust breaking.
Emily shook her head.
“You all knew.”
Her mother reached for her hand.
Emily pulled away.
“Don’t.”
The pain in her mother’s eyes was obvious.
But Emily continued.
“I spent fifteen years believing I was alone.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Emily’s voice trembled.
“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up every day wondering why the person who promised to protect you disappeared.”
Her mother looked away.
“I wanted to come back.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Finally, the answer came.
A painful answer.
“Because I was the reason your father died.”
The garden became silent.
Emily stared at her.
“What?”
Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t kill him.”
“I know.”
“But I made a mistake.”
She took a deep breath.
“A mistake that allowed Marcus to find him.”
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“What mistake?”
Her mother looked at the ground.
“Your father had proof against Marcus and Vanessa.”
Emily listened.
“He needed someone he trusted to deliver the evidence to a lawyer.”
“And?”
“I was supposed to do it.”
A cold feeling moved through Emily.
“But you didn’t.”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I trusted the wrong person.”
Emily waited.
Her mother whispered:
“Richard.”
Emily froze.
“Richard?”
“Yes.”
“But Richard was trying to help?”
Her mother gave a painful smile.
“That is what everyone thought.”
The mystery became darker.
“Your father believed Richard was innocent.”
Daniel’s words suddenly came back.
Richard had been afraid.
Richard had secrets.
“But he wasn’t?”
Her mother shook her head.
“Richard knew about Marcus stealing money.”
Emily stared.
“Then why did he let him continue?”
“Because Marcus had something against him.”
“What?”
Her mother looked toward the mansion.
“Richard had built his empire on a secret.”
“What secret?”
Before her mother could answer, a voice interrupted.
“He wasn’t the only one.”
Emily and her mother turned.
Daniel stood near the garden entrance.
Emily frowned.
“How long have you been listening?”
“Long enough.”
Her mother looked at him.
“Your father told you more than I thought.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“My father left another message.”
Emily looked surprised.
“What message?”
Daniel held an old envelope.
“My father knew he was responsible for helping Marcus.”
He looked at Emily’s mother.
“But he also knew Richard was hiding something.”
Her mother’s face changed.
“What did he write?”
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
He read:
"Richard Blackwood did not fear losing his company. He feared losing the truth about the child he abandoned."
Emily looked confused.
“What child?”
Nobody answered.
Then her mother whispered:
“Another child.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know.”
Her mother looked away.
Emily felt overwhelmed.
“How many secrets does this family have?”
No one responded.
Because they all knew the answer.
Too many.
That afternoon, Vanessa returned to the mansion.
But she was no longer the same woman who had walked confidently into the foyer.
Her reputation was damaged.
Her plan had failed.
And she was desperate.
She entered Richard’s old office.
The room was filled with memories of the man who built the Blackwood empire.
Vanessa walked to his desk.
She opened a hidden compartment.
Inside was an old photograph.
A photograph she had kept hidden for years.
She stared at it.
A young Richard.
A young woman.
And a baby.
Her expression hardened.
“You should have destroyed this.”
A voice came from behind her.
Vanessa turned.
Marcus Vale stood in the doorway.
“You’re losing control,” he said.
Vanessa closed the drawer.
“I know what I’m doing.”
“No.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“You are acting out of anger.”
“She ruined everything.”
“Emily didn’t ruin anything.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t understand.”
Marcus smiled slightly.
“I understand perfectly.”
He looked at the photograph.
“You’re afraid.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Be careful.”
“Why?”
Marcus smiled.
“Because Emily is not the weak little girl you remember.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“She survived.”
A long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“She should have disappeared.”
Marcus looked at her.
“That was the mistake.”
“What?”
“You thought destroying her family meant destroying her.”
He stepped closer.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
“Your father’s blood runs through her veins.”
Vanessa’s eyes darkened.
For the first time, she realized something terrifying.
Emily was not fighting for an inheritance.
She was fighting for the truth.
And the truth was the one thing Vanessa could never control.
That night, Emily stood alone in front of the old photograph found in the archive.
Her father.
Richard.
Two men who had built something together.
Two men connected by blood and betrayal.
Then she noticed something.
A small detail she had missed before.
Behind the photograph was writing.
A hidden message.
She turned it over.
Only one sentence appeared.
"Emily, if you discover this, find the child who was taken away."
Her heart raced.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another piece missing from the puzzle.
Then beneath the message was a name.
A name that made Daniel go completely silent when he saw it.
Because it was not Vanessa.
It was not Marcus.
It was someone who had been close to Emily her entire life.
Someone she trusted.
May you like
Someone she never suspected.
Her mother.
