Chapter 8: The Ghost From Veronika's Past

The doors of the mansion opened slowly.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Almost peacefully.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because everyone inside knew one thing.

Whoever walked through those doors did not need to force their way in.

They were already part of the story.

The footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

One step.

Two steps.

Three.

Then the figure appeared.

Veronika stopped breathing.

Her entire world narrowed down to one face.

A face she had spent twenty years trying to forget.

A face she had seen in old photographs.

A face she had cried over when she thought she had lost everything.

“Marcus…”

The name came out like a whisper.

Isabella turned pale.

Alex looked confused.

Richard closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

The past had finally returned.

Marcus Valenti.

Veronika’s first husband.

Isabella’s father.

The man everyone believed died twenty years ago.

The man whose death had destroyed Veronika’s family.

He looked different now.

Older.

Harder.

A scar crossed the side of his face.

His eyes carried years of anger.

But there was no mistake.

It was him.

Alive.

Standing in front of them.

Veronika stared at him.

“You died.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.”

Her hands trembled.

“Why?”

A simple question.

But it carried twenty years of pain.

“Why did you let me mourn you?”

Marcus looked away.

“Because if you knew I was alive, everything would have failed.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“Failed?”

Her voice was filled with anger.

“You mean our family?”

Marcus looked at her.

For a moment, his expression changed.

Something almost like regret appeared.

“My daughter.”

Isabella immediately stepped back.

“Don’t call me that.”

The words hit him.

But he accepted them.

Because he knew he deserved them.

Damian Cross entered behind Marcus.

Victor Hale followed.

The three men stood together.

The architects of destruction.

Veronika looked between them.

“So this is the truth.”

She spoke slowly.

“You three worked together.”

Victor smiled.

“Not exactly.”

That answer surprised everyone.

Damian looked annoyed.

Victor continued.

“Everyone thinks this was one plan.”

He walked closer.

“But it was actually three plans.”

Richard frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Victor smiled.

“Damian wanted control of Veronika’s empire.”

“Alex wanted money.”

“And I wanted revenge.”

His eyes moved toward Marcus.

“But Marcus wanted something completely different.”

Veronika looked at her former husband.

“What did you want?”

Marcus stared at her.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then he answered.

“I wanted you to feel what I felt.”

Veronika frowned.

“What?”

“When I lost my family.”

The room became quiet.

“You think I abandoned you?”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“No, Veronika.”

He looked at Isabella.

“You abandoned me.”

The accusation shocked everyone.

Veronika stared at him.

“That is a lie.”

“Is it?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Tell them.”

“Tell them about the night you chose your company over us.”

Veronika’s expression changed.

Because she remembered.

Twenty years ago.

The night everything changed.

She had an important business meeting.

One that could save the company.

Marcus wanted her to stay home.

Isabella had been sick.

But Veronika left.

The deal succeeded.

The company survived.

But when she returned...

everything was different.

Marcus was gone.

Isabella was gone.

And soon after, Marcus was declared dead.

For years, Veronika blamed herself.

But now Marcus was standing there.

Alive.

And angry.

“You think money can replace family.”

Marcus said.

“You built an empire and lost the only people who mattered.”

Veronika looked at Isabella.

Pain crossed her face.

“I made mistakes.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But you were never allowed to forget them.”

Alex watched silently.

For the first time, he saw the entire picture.

This was never about money.

Money was just the weapon.

The real war was between people who had been hurt.

People who wanted revenge.

People who wanted someone else to suffer.

And everyone had become a piece.

Then Marcus revealed something that changed everything.

“You want to know why Isabella survived?”

Everyone looked at him.

Veronika’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus smiled.

“Victor did not save her.”

The room froze.

Isabella looked confused.

“What?”

Marcus continued.

“I did.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“Marcus.”

But Marcus ignored him.

“After the accident, I found Isabella.”

He looked at his daughter.

“She was alive.”

Isabella stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you come for me?”

His face showed pain.

“Because Victor convinced me.”

“Convinced you of what?”

“That Veronika would destroy everything again.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with anger.

“You believed him?”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

Silence.

The truth was uglier than anyone expected.

Marcus had not been a victim.

He had been a participant.

Suddenly, Damian laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

“You are all so emotional.”

He walked toward the center of the room.

“That is your weakness.”

Veronika looked at him.

“What?”

“Feelings.”

Damian smiled.

“Victor wanted revenge.”

“Marcus wanted forgiveness.”

“Alex wanted money.”

“But me?”

He looked around.

“I wanted something much simpler.”

He pulled out a document.

“I wanted Valenti Global.”

Richard’s face changed.

“What is that?”

Damian smiled.

“The final acquisition agreement.”

Veronika stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Damian shook his head.

“It was impossible before.”

He looked at Alex.

“But after your death…”

A pause.

“After your disappearance…”

He smiled.

“Your empire became vulnerable.”

Veronika suddenly understood.

All of this.

The helicopter.

The marriage.

The fake death.

The chaos.

It was not just revenge.

It was a corporate takeover.

Then the mansion lights went out.

Again.

But this time...

everyone heard something.

A gunshot.

One single shot.

The sound echoed through the darkness.

Someone screamed.

When the emergency lights turned on...

one person was lying on the floor.

Blood spreading across their shirt.

Everyone froze.

Because the person who had been shot...

was not Veronika.

Not Alex.

Not Richard.

Not Isabella.

It was Victor Hale.

The mastermind.

The man who controlled everything.

Victor looked up weakly.

And smiled.

Because before losing consciousness, he whispered:

“Now you’ll finally know…”

A pause.

“The real person behind all of this.”

Everyone turned toward the doorway.

A shadow stood there.

A person holding the weapon.

A person none of them recognized.

The stranger lowered the gun.

And said:

“Victor was never the mastermind.”

The figure stepped into the light.

May you like

“I was.”
