Chapter 1: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Die

The ocean had no memory.
That was what Alex believed.
A thousand meters below the helicopter, endless waves crashed against each other, swallowing every secret that fell into their darkness. No witnesses. No evidence. No second chances.
Just silence.
Perfect silence.
Alex sat inside the helicopter, staring through the glass window at the empty blue world beneath him. The wind outside was violent, but inside the cabin everything felt calm.
Too calm.
His white wedding suit was still perfectly clean. Not a single drop of blood stained the expensive fabric. His hair was slightly messy from the wind, but the cameras would make it look romantic.
A grieving husband.
A tragic accident.
A man who had lost the love of his life only moments after saying goodbye forever.
That was the story the world would believe.
Alex looked at the empty seat beside him.
Veronika’s seat.
Only ten minutes ago, she had been sitting there with a smile on her face, holding his hand like he was the only person in the world who mattered.
“You make me feel young again,” she had whispered.
Those words almost made him laugh.
Almost.
Because Veronika had never understood the truth.
People like her did not get second chances at love.
They got hunted.
For decades, Veronika had built an empire from nothing. She had defeated businessmen twice her age, survived betrayals from partners, and created a fortune that made powerful people jealous.
But despite all her intelligence, she had one weakness.
She wanted to be loved.
And Alex knew exactly how to use that weakness.
He remembered the first time he saw her.
The charity event had been filled with billionaires, politicians, celebrities, and people pretending to care about the world while secretly calculating their next business move.
Veronika had stood alone near the balcony.
Everyone knew who she was.
The billionaire widow.
The woman with a fortune large enough to change countries.
But nobody saw the loneliness behind her eyes.
Nobody except Alex.
Or at least, that was what she believed.
He approached her with a simple glass of champagne.
“You look like someone who is surrounded by thousands of people but still feels alone.”
She had looked surprised.
Most people talked about her money.
Her companies.
Her power.
Nobody talked about her heart.
That was the moment Alex entered her life.
The moment he created the perfect illusion.
Flowers every morning.
Romantic dinners.
Surprise vacations.
Messages telling her he missed her.
He became the man she had waited decades to find.
And while everyone warned her, she defended him.
Her lawyer, Richard Cole, had been the first.
“Veronika, I have reviewed his background. Something does not feel right.”
She had looked annoyed.
“Richard, you have known me for twenty years. You should know I can judge people.”
Richard had sighed.
“I know you can judge business partners. I know you can destroy competitors. But love is different. Love makes even the smartest people ignore obvious signs.”
She had walked away.
Alex had been standing outside the office.
Listening.
And smiling.
Because Richard was right.
Love made people blind.
And blindness was exactly what Alex needed.
The helicopter continued flying toward the mainland.
Soon, the rescue call would come.
Soon, the investigation would begin.
Soon, the world would know that Veronika Valenti, one of the richest women alive, had died in a tragic helicopter accident shortly after her wedding.
Alex had already prepared everything.
The pilot had received instructions.
The documents had been signed.
The inheritance papers were waiting.
The only thing left was to play the role.
He reached into his pocket and touched his phone.
One message.
That was all he needed to send.
The message that confirmed everything was finished.
But before he could unlock the screen, something strange happened.
The helicopter radio crackled.
A voice came through.
“Pilot, do you copy?”
The pilot immediately grabbed the radio.
“Yes. This is aircraft V-72.”
A pause.
Then the voice spoke again.
“Change of route. You are not cleared to return to the mainland.”
Alex frowned.
The pilot looked confused.
“What?”
The voice repeated.
“Your flight path has been changed. Continue north. Do not land.”
Alex slowly turned toward the pilot.
“What is happening?”
The pilot looked nervous.
“I don’t know. Someone is interfering with the communication.”
Alex’s heart began beating faster.
Impossible.
Everything was planned.
There should have been no surprises.
He looked out the window again.
The ocean stretched endlessly in every direction.
Then he noticed something.
A small light blinking on the helicopter’s control panel.
Red.
He had never seen it before.
“What is that?” Alex asked.
The pilot looked at it.
His expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?”
The pilot swallowed.
“This helicopter has an emergency tracking system.”
Alex stared at him.
“So?”
“So it was disabled before takeoff.”
A cold feeling moved through Alex’s body.
“What are you saying?”
The pilot looked at him.
“I’m saying someone turned it back on.”
For the first time that day, Alex felt something he had not expected.
Fear.
He immediately grabbed his phone.
No signal.
He checked again.
Nothing.
Then his screen suddenly lit up.
One new message.
From an unknown number.
Alex opened it.
And froze.
The message contained only three words.
SHE IS ALIVE.
His breathing stopped.
No.
That was impossible.
He had seen her fall.
He had watched her disappear.
The ocean had taken her.
There was no way.
His fingers trembled as another message appeared.
This time, there was a picture attached.
Alex opened it.
The image showed a hospital room.
An elderly woman lying on a bed.
Her face was bruised.
Her wedding dress was torn.
But her eyes were open.
Looking directly at the camera.
Looking directly at him.
Veronika.
Alive.
Alex dropped the phone.
For the first time in years, he felt powerless.
Because he had spent months planning how to kill Veronika.
But he had never planned for what would happen if she survived.
The helicopter continued disappearing into the storm clouds.
And somewhere far away, inside a secret hospital, Veronika slowly opened her eyes.
A doctor stood beside her bed.
“Mrs. Valenti, you are awake.”
Her lips moved slightly.
Her voice was weak.
“Where is he?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Who?”
Veronika stared at the ceiling.
The woman who had almost died was no longer the same person.
The loving bride was gone.
The trusting woman was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A question.
“Where is my husband?”
The doctor looked away.
Because he knew the truth.
Alex thought he had buried Veronika beneath the ocean.
But he had made one mistake.
He forgot that powerful people always had secrets.
And Veronika’s biggest secret had just awakened.
