Chapter 7: The Lawyer's Hidden Sin

The silence after Victor’s call was louder than any scream.
Richard Cole stood in the middle of the security room, surrounded by people who had trusted him for years.
Veronika.
Isabella.
Even Alex.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting for him to deny it.
Waiting for him to say Victor was lying.
But Richard said nothing.
And that was worse.
Veronika stared at the man beside her.
The man who had protected her companies.
Managed her legal battles.
Saved her from countless enemies.
The man who had always told her:
“Trust is your greatest weakness, Veronika.”
Now she wondered.
Was he warning her?
Or was he describing himself?
“Richard.”
Her voice was quiet.
“Tell me Victor is lying.”
Richard closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like an old man carrying a weight too heavy to hold.
Then he opened them.
“I wish he was.”
The words broke something inside the room.
Isabella stepped forward.
“You were there.”
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.”
Her expression changed.
Twenty years of unanswered questions suddenly had a face.
A name.
A person.
“You knew I survived.”
Richard looked down.
“Yes.”
Veronika felt like the ground disappeared beneath her.
“You knew?”
Richard nodded slowly.
“I knew.”
The room went completely silent.
Alex watched carefully.
Because for once, someone else was being exposed.
Someone other than him.
Veronika walked toward Richard.
Every step was slow.
Controlled.
But her hands were shaking.
“Twenty years.”
Her voice cracked slightly.
“Twenty years, Richard.”
“I searched hospitals.”
“I searched countries.”
“I paid investigators.”
“I buried myself in work because I thought I had lost my daughter.”
She looked at him.
“And you knew?”
Richard looked away.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Veronika laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Protecting me?”
She pointed toward Isabella.
“You let me believe my child was dead.”
Richard swallowed.
“I made the hardest decision of my life.”
“No.”
Veronika’s voice became colder.
“You made the decision for me.”
Richard sat down.
For the first time, the powerful lawyer who had defeated corporations and criminals looked weak.
“I need to tell you what happened that night.”
The monitors around them continued showing the mansion.
The storm outside grew stronger.
Lightning flashed through the windows.
Almost as if the world itself was waiting for the truth.
“Twenty years ago, Victor was already planning his revenge.”
Richard began.
“He knew you would never surrender the company.”
“He knew he couldn’t destroy you financially.”
“So he looked for something else.”
Isabella listened silently.
“He found your weakness.”
Richard looked at Veronika.
“Your daughter.”
Veronika’s eyes filled with anger.
“What did he do?”
Richard took a deep breath.
“He arranged the accident.”
Everyone froze.
Alex whispered:
“He tried to kill her?”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“He wanted Veronika to believe she was dead.”
The room became colder.
“Because grief changes people.”
Richard continued.
“A person who loses everything becomes easier to control.”
Isabella clenched her fists.
“So Victor saved me just to use me.”
“Yes.”
Richard nodded.
“He wanted you to grow up believing your mother abandoned you.”
“He wanted you to hate her.”
“Because one day, he planned to bring you back.”
“And use you against her.”
Isabella looked at Veronika.
Pain crossed her face.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Veronika asked.
Richard’s expression changed.
“Because Victor threatened me.”
Alex frowned.
“With what?”
Richard looked at Isabella.
“With her.”
Everyone became silent.
Richard explained.
After the accident, he found evidence that Victor was responsible.
He confronted him.
But Victor already had a plan.
He showed Richard documents.
Photos.
Information.
He knew every secret about Veronika.
Including Isabella’s survival.
Victor gave him a choice.
Expose him and Isabella would disappear forever.
Stay silent and Isabella would be protected.
Richard chose silence.
Not because he trusted Victor.
Because he believed keeping Isabella alive was better than risking losing her completely.
“I thought one day I would find a way.”
Richard whispered.
“But every time I got close, Victor moved her.”
Veronika stared at him.
“So you sacrificed me.”
Richard looked devastated.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
Then Isabella spoke.
“You knew where I was.”
Richard nodded.
“Sometimes.”
“Sometimes?”
“I followed Victor’s movements.”
“Then why didn’t you come for me?”
Richard had no answer.
And Isabella understood.
Because the truth was complicated.
Richard had protected her body.
But he had abandoned her heart.
Alex suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
He shook his head.
“This is unbelievable.”
Veronika looked at him.
“You find this funny?”
“No.”
Alex looked around.
“I’m just realizing something.”
He pointed at everyone.
“All of us are victims.”
Nobody responded.
“Victor used me.”
“He used Isabella.”
“He used Richard.”
“He used Damian.”
His voice became bitter.
“And somehow, he made all of us destroy each other.”
Veronika stared at him.
“You are not innocent, Alex.”
“I know.”
For once, Alex did not argue.
“I tried to kill you.”
Silence.
“But I was never the mastermind.”
That statement was true.
And everyone knew it.
Suddenly, the security alarm activated again.
Richard immediately looked at the monitors.
His face changed.
“What now?”
The screen showed the mansion entrance.
A black vehicle had stopped outside.
One person stepped out.
Then another.
Then another.
Security footage zoomed in.
Veronika recognized the first person.
Damian Cross.
But he was not alone.
Standing beside him was Victor Hale.
Alive.
The man who had controlled everything from the shadows.
The man who had returned after twenty years.
But there was one more person.
Someone none of them expected.
Someone who made Isabella lose color in her face.
Someone who made Richard step backward.
Someone who made Alex whisper:
“No…”
The third person removed their hood.
And the entire room froze.
Because it was impossible.
They had all believed this person was dead.
Victor’s voice came through the mansion speakers.
“Enough secrets.”
The doors opened.
And the final player entered.
Veronika’s past had come back.
Not as a memory.
May you like
As a person.
