Chapter 14: The Choice That Destroyed A Family

The room felt smaller.

The walls of the mansion.

The expensive furniture.

The millions of dollars surrounding them.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because everyone was waiting for one answer.

Not about money.

Not about the empire.

Not about revenge.

About a mother’s choice.

Daniel looked at Veronika.

Isabella looked at Veronika.

Even Alex, the man who had once tried to destroy her, looked at her.

For the first time, Veronika Valenti had nowhere to hide.

No lawyer could protect her.

No company could distract people.

No fortune could silence the truth.

Only her words remained.

“Twenty-eight years ago…”

Veronika whispered.

“My life changed forever.”

She walked toward the window.

Rain covered the glass.

A perfect reflection of the storm inside the room.

“Back then, I was not the woman you see today.”

She looked at her children.

“I was young.”

“Ambitious.”

“And convinced that if I worked hard enough…”

A pause.

“I could control everything.”

Daniel looked away.

Because he had heard those words before.

From Sophia.

From Victor.

From himself.

“At that time, Valenti Global was not an empire.”

Veronika continued.

“It was struggling.”

“We were close to bankruptcy.”

Richard lowered his head.

He remembered.

Everyone did.

“Then an opportunity appeared.”

“A deal that could change everything.”

“But there was a condition.”

Isabella frowned.

“What condition?”

Veronika closed her eyes.

“The investors wanted me to leave my family behind.”

Silence.

“They believed a woman with children could not fully commit.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“They made you choose?”

Veronika nodded.

“Yes.”

The memory returned.

A younger Veronika sitting inside a conference room.

Powerful men around a table.

Men who saw her talent.

But not her humanity.

They offered her everything.

Money.

Influence.

A future.

But they wanted one thing.

Control.

They told her:

“You cannot build a global empire while carrying emotional responsibilities.”

At the same time...

her family was falling apart.

Daniel was sick.

Isabella was only a child.

Marcus was struggling with his own problems.

And Veronika was forced into an impossible decision.

Stay with her family.

Or secure a future that could protect them.

She chose the future.

At least...

that was what she told herself.

Daniel’s voice interrupted.

“So you left.”

Veronika turned.

“Yes.”

His eyes were filled with pain.

“You chose the company.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I chose what I believed would save us.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“But it destroyed us.”

Veronika had no answer.

Because he was right.

Then came the night everything changed.

The night of the accident.

The night Isabella disappeared.

The night Daniel’s life was rewritten.

But the truth was different.

There was no accident.

Not exactly.

Veronika revealed something nobody expected.

“The car crash was meant for me.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Richard looked shocked.

“The attack?”

Veronika nodded.

“Yes.”

Sophia had arranged it.

But the target was not Isabella.

It was Veronika.

Sophia wanted to remove her.

Destroy her.

Make her lose everything.

But something went wrong.

Daniel and Isabella were caught in the middle.

Daniel survived.

Isabella survived.

But their lives were changed forever.

“Then why did you think we were dead?”

Isabella asked.

Veronika looked at her.

“Because someone showed me evidence.”

“Who?”

A pause.

“Sophia.”

Everyone became silent.

Sophia had not only taken her children.

She had made Veronika believe she lost them.

She had created the wound.

Then used the wound as a weapon.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Wait.”

He looked confused.

“If Sophia caused everything…”

He looked at Veronika.

“Why did she say you chose one child?”

Veronika’s face changed.

Because that was the part she feared.

The part she never wanted to reveal.

“I didn’t choose between you and Isabella.”

She whispered.

“I chose between two impossible options.”

She looked at Daniel.

“When the attack happened…”

A pause.

“I could only reach one of you.”

Silence.

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Veronika’s voice broke.

“You and Isabella were trapped in different vehicles.”

“I had seconds.”

“Only seconds.”

She looked down.

“I saved Isabella.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The truth hurt.

Not because she saved Isabella.

Because he understood.

He had always believed she abandoned him.

But the truth was worse.

She had tried.

And failed.

“I was taken afterward.”

Daniel whispered.

Veronika nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Isabella?”

“She was rescued.”

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Isabella.

For the first time, he did not see a rival.

He saw his little sister.

The child who survived.

The child who carried the guilt of being saved.

Then Alex spoke.

“So Sophia lied to everyone.”

Richard shook his head.

“Not completely.”

Everyone looked at him.

Richard continued:

“That is what makes her dangerous.”

“She takes pieces of truth.”

“And builds a bigger lie.”

Veronika nodded.

“Sophia didn’t create my mistakes.”

A pause.

“She only turned them into weapons.”

Suddenly, the mansion doors opened.

Security guards rushed inside.

“Mrs. Valenti!”

Everyone turned.

“What happened?”

The guard looked terrified.

“We found something outside.”

“What?”

He handed Richard an envelope.

No name.

No address.

Only one word written on it:

FINAL.

Richard opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Sophia.

Standing beside someone.

Someone they thought was dead.

Someone who should not exist.

Veronika’s face turned white.

“No…”

Isabella looked at the picture.

“Who is that?”

Veronika could barely speak.

Because beside Sophia stood Marcus.

Her former husband.

But that was impossible.

Marcus was already inside the mansion.

Everyone slowly turned.

Toward Marcus.

Then back to the photograph.

Two Marcus.

Two impossible truths.

One of them was lying.

The mansion lights suddenly turned off.

A voice came from the darkness.

Not Sophia.

Not Victor.

Not Adrian.

A new voice.

A voice filled with hatred.

“You spent years searching for the truth.”

The lights flickered.

A figure appeared on the balcony.

“You were never ready to see it.”

Everyone looked up.

And the person standing there...

was Marcus.

Again.

One Marcus stood beside Veronika.

One Marcus stood above them.

The man on the balcony smiled.

“Hello, Veronika.”

A pause.

“Did you really think you knew your own husband?”
