Chapter 12: The Betrayal of Richard Cole

“I’m sorry.”

Two words.

Two words that destroyed twenty years of trust.

Richard Cole stood in the center of the room, surrounded by the people whose lives had been changed by his actions.

Veronika.

Isabella.

Daniel.

Alex.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting for an explanation.

Waiting for the truth.

But Richard remained silent.

Because sometimes the hardest confession is not admitting what you did.

It is admitting why you did it.

Veronika looked at Richard.

The pain in her eyes was deeper than anger.

“You.”

Her voice trembled.

“After everything?”

Richard could not look at her.

“I know how it appears.”

“No.”

Veronika stepped closer.

“You don’t understand.”

Her voice became colder.

“I spent my life trusting almost nobody.”

A pause.

“But I trusted you.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“And I destroyed that trust.”

The honesty made it worse.

Daniel watched silently.

Unlike everyone else, he was not surprised.

Because he had spent years searching for the truth.

He had followed every hidden connection.

Every secret payment.

Every unexplained event.

And every road led back to Richard Cole.

“The world thinks Adrian created this war.”

Daniel said.

“They’re wrong.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Adrian only continued what Richard started.”

The room froze.

Veronika turned toward Richard.

“What does he mean?”

Richard remained silent.

Daniel placed another file on the table.

“Read it.”

Veronika opened it.

The first page immediately made her expression change.

A confidential report.

Twenty-five years old.

The title:

PROJECT REBIRTH

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

“What is this?”

Richard finally answered.

“My plan.”

The truth began decades earlier.

Before Victor.

Before Adrian.

Before Alex.

Richard Cole was not always Veronika’s loyal lawyer.

He was something else.

A strategist.

A man who believed the world could be controlled through preparation.

When he first met Veronika, he saw something nobody else saw.

Not just a talented businesswoman.

A person who was constantly surrounded by threats.

Enemies.

Betrayals.

People waiting for weakness.

Richard believed Veronika’s biggest mistake was trusting emotions.

So he created a system.

A way to predict threats before they happened.

A way to manipulate situations before they became dangerous.

Project Rebirth.

The idea was simple.

Create controlled scenarios.

Create controlled enemies.

Create controlled outcomes.

Until Veronika could never be surprised again.

But there was one problem.

People are not machines.

And control always comes with a price.

“You created Alex.”

Veronika whispered.

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

Alex looked shocked.

“Why?”

Richard looked at him.

“I needed someone who could test you.”

Alex laughed bitterly.

“Test her?”

Richard nodded.

“I needed to know if anyone could break through your defenses.”

“And you used me.”

“Yes.”

Alex’s face darkened.

“You ruined my life.”

Richard looked at him.

“I know.”

The answer was simple.

No excuse.

No defense.

Isabella stepped forward.

“So my mother’s entire nightmare…”

She looked at Richard.

“Was just an experiment?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what was it?”

“A warning.”

Everyone stared.

Richard continued.

“I never intended for Alex to hurt Veronika.”

Alex laughed.

“Really?”

Richard looked at him.

“The original plan was for him to expose himself before the wedding.”

Silence.

“What?”

Richard explained.

He had created a situation where Alex would eventually reveal his true intentions.

He had planned to confront him.

Remove him.

Protect Veronika.

But then something happened.

Someone interfered.

Someone changed the game.

“Adrian.”

Daniel said.

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“Adrian discovered Project Rebirth.”

“And instead of destroying it…”

Richard looked at the floor.

“He improved it.”

Suddenly, everything connected.

Alex was not created by Adrian.

But Adrian found him.

Damian used him.

Victor manipulated him.

And Richard started it.

Four different people.

Four different motives.

One disaster.

Veronika looked exhausted.

“So everyone used everyone.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“And I was the center.”

“Yes.”

A painful silence followed.

Then Alex asked the question nobody expected.

“Why?”

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at Richard.

“Why me?”

Richard stared at him.

Because this was the one question he had avoided.

“The truth?”

Alex nodded.

“Yes.”

Richard took a deep breath.

“Because you reminded me of myself.”

That answer surprised everyone.

Richard continued.

“You were ambitious.”

“Angry.”

“Desperate.”

“You wanted to prove you mattered.”

Alex looked away.

Richard’s voice softened.

“I thought I could control someone like you.”

A pause.

“But I forgot something.”

“What?”

Richard looked at him.

“People who feel powerless will do anything to gain power.”

Then the mansion shook.

A loud explosion came from outside.

Everyone reacted immediately.

The windows trembled.

The alarms activated.

Richard rushed to the monitors.

The screen showed flames near the main gate.

Someone had attacked the mansion.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“No.”

Veronika looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel pointed.

“That wasn’t Adrian.”

Richard frowned.

“How do you know?”

Daniel answered:

“Because Adrian wants control.”

A pause.

“This person wants destruction.”

Another explosion sounded.

The power suddenly disappeared.

Darkness.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

A voice nobody expected.

A voice that made Daniel freeze.

“Hello, Daniel.”

The room became silent.

Because Daniel knew that voice.

He had spent years trying to escape it.

The voice continued.

“You thought you buried the past.”

A pause.

“But some things refuse to stay dead.”

The emergency lights returned.

The security monitors turned on.

A video appeared.

A woman.

Older.

Cold.

Smiling.

Daniel stepped backward.

“No…”

Veronika looked at him.

“Who is she?”

Daniel could barely speak.

Because the woman on the screen was someone he believed had died twenty years ago.

Someone connected to his disappearance.

Someone who knew every secret.

His own mother.

The video showed her smiling.

Then she spoke:

“Daniel.”

A pause.

“Did you really think Victor Hale was the person who saved you?”

Daniel’s face turned pale.

The woman continued:

“He was the person who stole you from me.”

Silence.

Then the final sentence appeared on the screen:

THE REAL WAR BEGAN BEFORE VERONIKA EVER BUILT HER EMPIRE.
