Chapter 5: The Man Behind The Mask

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The photograph sat on the table like a weapon.

A single piece of paper.

A single image.

But it had the power to destroy everything they believed.

Veronika stared at it.

Alex stared at it.

Richard stared at it.

And Elena watched all of them.

Because she knew something they didn’t.

The truth was finally beginning to surface.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Like a buried body rising from the ground.

“Who is he?”

Veronika’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

Elena looked at her.

“You really don’t recognize him?”

Veronika picked up the photograph.

The image showed Alex standing beside a man outside a private airport.

Alex looked younger.

More confident.

The man beside him wore a dark suit.

His face was partially hidden.

But there was something familiar about him.

Something that bothered Veronika.

“I’ve seen him before.”

Elena nodded.

“You have.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Who is he?”

Elena looked at Alex.

“Tell them.”

Alex’s expression changed.

“I don’t know.”

Elena smiled.

“That’s the problem with you, Alex.”

She walked around the room.

“You spend your entire life lying to everyone.”

She stopped.

“But eventually, you start believing your own lies.”

Alex clenched his fists.

“Stop playing games.”

Elena opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

“You want to know who created the plan?”

She placed the first document down.

“You want to know who found Veronika?”

Another document.

“You want to know who convinced Damian Cross to use you?”

She placed the final paper down.

Then she said one name.

“Victor Hale.”

The room went silent.

Veronika’s face changed instantly.

“No.”

Richard looked at her.

“You know him?”

Veronika slowly sat down.

Because this name belonged to someone from her past.

Someone she thought was gone forever.

Twenty years earlier.

Before Valenti Global became a worldwide empire.

Before Veronika became one of the most powerful women alive.

She had a partner.

Victor Hale.

He was brilliant.

Charming.

Ambitious.

Together, they built the foundation of what would become her empire.

At first, they were unstoppable.

Everyone believed they would become the most powerful business couple in the world.

But success changed everything.

Victor wanted control.

Not partnership.

Control.

He wanted Veronika to step aside.

He believed she was too emotional.

Too compassionate.

Too willing to forgive.

Veronika refused.

So Victor betrayed her.

He secretly transferred company funds.

Manipulated investors.

Destroyed several business deals.

When the truth was discovered, Veronika removed him from the company.

Victor disappeared.

Everyone thought he had lost everything.

But Veronika knew something.

People like Victor Hale did not disappear.

They waited.

They planned.

They returned when revenge was possible.

Alex looked confused.

“You’re saying Victor Hale planned all this?”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“But why?”

Veronika looked at him.

“Because he doesn’t want my money.”

Alex frowned.

“Then what?”

Her answer was quiet.

“He wants my empire destroyed.”

Richard understood immediately.

“He doesn’t want to own Valenti Global.”

Veronika shook her head.

“No.”

Her eyes hardened.

“He wants nobody to have it.”

Alex walked toward the documents.

“This makes no sense.”

Elena looked at him.

“Really?”

She laughed softly.

“You never wondered why Damian suddenly appeared?”

Alex said nothing.

“You never wondered why your fake inheritance plan was so easy?”

Silence.

“You thought you were a genius.”

Elena pointed at him.

“You thought you created the perfect crime.”

Her voice became colder.

“But Victor created you.”

Those words hit Alex.

Created.

The word stayed in his mind.

“What do you mean?”

Elena looked at Veronika.

“Tell him.”

Veronika’s expression changed.

Because she already knew.

The truth she had avoided.

The truth she had hidden from herself.

“Alex wasn’t chosen randomly.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He was placed.”

Alex froze.

“What?”

Veronika continued.

“Victor knew I would never trust someone who approached me for money.”

She looked at him.

“So he needed someone who looked genuine.”

Alex’s face became pale.

“No.”

“He searched for someone with the right personality.”

“No.”

“Someone charming.”

“Stop.”

“Someone with a history of desperation.”

Alex stepped backward.

“Stop!”

But Veronika continued.

“Someone who could make me believe I was finally loved.”

Alex looked broken.

Because for the first time, he questioned his own memories.

Was every moment with Veronika fake?

Was every decision his own?

Or had someone guided him toward this moment?

Then Elena revealed the final piece.

“There’s something else.”

She pulled out a small USB drive.

“I found this inside Victor Hale’s private archive.”

Richard connected it to the computer.

A video appeared.

The screen showed Victor.

Older.

Cold.

Sitting in a dark office.

His voice filled the room.

“Veronika Valenti.”

Everyone froze.

Victor looked directly at the camera.

“You took everything from me.”

He smiled.

“You destroyed my reputation.”

“You removed me from the empire I created.”

A pause.

“But you made one mistake.”

Victor leaned closer.

“You thought I wanted revenge.”

The video continued.

“I don’t.”

Veronika frowned.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“I want you to understand what it feels like to lose everything.”

The screen showed pictures.

Veronika’s companies.

Her properties.

Her accounts.

Her employees.

Then something appeared.

A list.

A very long list.

Names of people connected to her empire.

Some familiar.

Some unknown.

Richard’s expression changed.

“This is impossible.”

Veronika looked at him.

“What?”

Richard pointed at the screen.

“Those are not just business contacts.”

He swallowed.

“They are people inside your company.”

The room became cold.

Victor’s voice continued.

“Your empire was never protected by money, Veronika.”

A pause.

“It was protected by loyalty.”

The video showed dozens of employees.

Executives.

Managers.

People who had worked beside Veronika for years.

Victor smiled.

“And I spent twenty years destroying that loyalty.”

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was worse than expected.

This was not a murder attempt.

It was a war.

A war that had been prepared for twenty years.

Then suddenly...

The mansion alarm activated.

Red lights flashed.

Richard checked the security system.

His face changed.

“What happened?”

He looked at Veronika.

“Someone entered the building.”

Alex immediately turned toward the entrance.

“Who?”

Richard looked at the monitor.

The security camera showed a person walking through the hallway.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like they owned the place.

The figure stopped in front of the camera.

And looked directly into it.

Then the person removed their mask.

Everyone froze.

Because they knew that face.

A face they never expected to see again.

Veronika whispered:

“No…”

The person smiled.

“Hello, mother.”

The entire room went silent.

Because Veronika Valenti had spent twenty years believing she had lost her only child.

But the dead had just returned.
