Chapter 3: The Secret Partner Behind Alex

Alex had always believed he was the smartest person in the room.

It was the belief that had carried him through life.

He was not born wealthy.

He was not born powerful.

But he had learned something early.

The world did not reward kindness.

It rewarded people who knew how to take.

And Alex Carter knew how to take.

He knew how to smile when he hated someone.

He knew how to pretend when he wanted something.

He knew how to become whatever another person needed him to be.

That was why Veronika had fallen for him.

She did not fall in love with Alex Carter.

She fell in love with the version of Alex he created.

The gentle man.

The loyal husband.

The person who looked at her and saw more than her fortune.

But now, standing inside the mansion with the woman he tried to kill, Alex realized something terrifying.

For the first time in his life...

he was the one being manipulated.

Veronika sat across from him in the mansion’s private library.

The same room where they had spent countless nights together.

The room where Alex once held her hand and promised:

“I will protect you until my last breath.”

Now those words felt disgusting.

Like poison disguised as a love letter.

Richard Cole stood beside Veronika.

The lawyer who had warned her from the beginning.

Alex looked at him.

“You knew?”

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told Alex everything.

“You knew she was alive.”

Richard adjusted his glasses.

“I knew she was smart enough to survive.”

Alex laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No,” Richard replied calmly.

“I expect you to understand that Veronika Valenti was never as helpless as you thought.”

Veronika looked at Alex.

“Tell me something.”

Her voice was quiet.

And somehow that made it more frightening.

“When did you decide to kill me?”

Alex said nothing.

“Was it before you proposed?”

Silence.

“Before the wedding?”

Still nothing.

“Or was it the first day you met me?”

Alex looked away.

That was enough.

Veronika’s expression changed slightly.

Not surprise.

Not sadness.

Disappointment.

Because deep inside, a small part of her had hoped she was wrong.

That maybe Alex had truly loved her once.

But now she knew.

The entire relationship had been a performance.

“You never loved me.”

Alex finally looked at her.

“Love doesn’t pay bills.”

The words came out cold.

And Veronika understood.

This was the real Alex.

Not the man who brought flowers.

Not the man who kissed her forehead.

Not the man who whispered promises in the dark.

This was the man who had pushed her out of a helicopter.

A stranger wearing the face of someone she trusted.

Then Alex asked the question that had been haunting him.

“Who helped you?”

Veronika smiled.

“Why?”

“Because someone knew about the helicopter.”

“Yes.”

“Someone turned on the emergency system.”

“Yes.”

“Someone sent me the video.”

“Yes.”

Alex leaned forward.

“Who?”

Before Veronika could answer, every light in the mansion suddenly turned off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Richard immediately reached for his phone.

“No signal.”

Alex stood.

“What is happening?”

Then a voice came from the speakers.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Congratulations, Veronika.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“You survived.”

Veronika’s eyes narrowed.

She recognized it.

Not because she knew the man personally.

But because she had heard that voice many times.

In business meetings.

On phone calls.

In negotiations.

The voice belonged to one of the most powerful men in the world.

Damian Cross.

The billionaire investor who had spent years trying to buy Veronika’s company.

The man she had defeated three times.

The man who hated losing.

“Damian,” Veronika whispered.

Alex looked confused.

“You know him?”

Veronika ignored him.

“Show yourself.”

A laugh echoed through the speakers.

“You always were impatient.”

The lights returned.

But Damian was not there.

Instead, a screen behind them turned on.

A video appeared.

Damian Cross sat in a luxurious office overlooking the city.

Older than Alex.

More experienced.

More dangerous.

“Veronika, I have to admit something.”

He smiled.

“You surprised me.”

She stared at the screen.

“What do you want?”

Damian leaned back.

“The same thing I wanted three years ago.”

“Your empire.”

Veronika’s expression hardened.

“You helped him.”

Alex looked shocked.

“You knew?”

Damian smiled.

“Of course I knew.”

Alex turned toward the screen.

“Wait.”

The confidence disappeared from his face.

“What do you mean?”

Damian looked at Alex.

And smiled.

A smile that made Alex uncomfortable.

“You really thought I chose you because you were special?”

Alex froze.

“What?”

“You were just a tool.”

The words hit harder than any physical attack.

Alex stared at the screen.

“No.”

Damian continued.

“I needed someone close to Veronika. Someone she trusted. Someone who could control her emotions.”

His eyes moved toward Veronika.

“And then you appeared.”

Veronika looked at Alex.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Alex wasn’t the mastermind.

He was a pawn.

A very useful pawn.

But still a pawn.

Alex’s face turned red.

“You used me?”

Damian laughed.

“You used yourself.”

The room became silent.

“You wanted her money.”

“You wanted power.”

“You wanted a shortcut.”

Damian’s voice became colder.

“I simply gave you the opportunity.”

Alex clenched his fists.

“You promised me half.”

“No.”

Damian smiled.

“I promised you what you wanted to hear.”

Alex looked terrified.

Because he finally understood.

The same manipulation he used on Veronika...

had been used on him.

Veronika stood.

“So the plan was simple.”

She looked at the screen.

“Alex kills me.”

“Alex inherits my assets.”

“Then you take control through him.”

Damian nodded.

“Exactly.”

Richard frowned.

“But the inheritance cannot be transferred without investigation.”

Damian smiled.

“That was the old plan.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

Veronika’s face changed.

Because she recognized it.

Her own signature.

Her own handwriting.

A document she had never seen before.

Alex looked confused.

“What is that?”

Damian answered.

“Your wife’s final will.”

Veronika stepped closer.

“That’s impossible.”

Damian smiled.

“No, Veronika.”

His voice became a whisper.

“That is the part you don’t understand.”

The screen zoomed in on the document.

At the bottom was Veronika’s signature.

Perfect.

Real.

Impossible.

Because she had never signed it.

Richard looked shocked.

“Someone forged her signature.”

Damian smiled.

“Not forged.”

Everyone stared.

“What do you mean?”

Damian leaned closer to the camera.

“I mean Veronika signed it.”

The room went silent.

Veronika’s face lost color.

Because if that was true...

someone had access to her private life.

Someone close enough to make her sign something without knowing its true purpose.

Someone she trusted.

Someone from inside her own circle.

Damian’s final words echoed through the mansion.

“The person who betrayed you first…”

The screen went black.

“…was never Alex.”

Silence.

Then Alex slowly turned toward Veronika.

For the first time, they shared the same fear.

Because both of them realized the same thing.

There was another player.

Someone hidden.

Someone who had been watching them both.

May you like

And that person was still free.
