Chapter 7: The Secret Elena Carried

The mechanical room fell silent.

Not the silence of peace.

The silence before a storm.

Julian looked at Elena.

She looked back at him.

And in her eyes...

He saw something that frightened him more than Adrian's betrayal.

Guilt.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Guilt.

"Elena..."

His voice was quiet.

"What did he mean?"

She didn't answer.

The seconds stretched painfully.

Marco and his team stood frozen.

Even Adrian, surrounded by armed security, watched with a faint smile.

He had wanted this moment.

He hadn't come to win a fight.

He had come to destroy trust.

And Julian realized that was always Adrian's greatest weapon.

Not money.

Not power.

Not violence.

Doubt.

"Elena."

Julian stepped closer.

"Tell me."

She looked down.

Her hands moved protectively over her stomach.

"I wanted to."

Her voice shook.

"Every day."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of Adrian?"

She shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"Of you."

The words hurt more than Julian expected.

"Me?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"I was afraid that when you learned the truth..."

She swallowed.

"...you would never look at me the same way again."

Julian felt his chest tighten.

"After everything?"

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

Adrian leaned against the damaged generator.

Enjoying every second.

"Tell him, Elena."

Julian turned toward him.

"Shut up."

Adrian smiled.

"You deserve to know."

Marco stepped forward.

"Mr. Keller, you should be more concerned about yourself."

Adrian ignored him.

"Eight months ago, Elena didn't simply disappear."

Julian looked back at his wife.

"Then what happened?"

Elena finally whispered:

"I found something."

Eight months earlier.

Before the disappearance.

Before the lies.

Before the fear.

Elena had discovered something inside Julian's private office.

She wasn't searching for secrets.

She wasn't suspicious.

She had simply gone there to surprise him.

Julian had been working seventy-hour weeks.

Their anniversary was approaching.

She wanted to leave a letter on his desk.

A reminder that behind the CEO...

There was still a husband.

But when she entered the office...

She found a folder.

Not one of Julian's company documents.

Not a contract.

Not a financial report.

A folder marked:

ROSSI INTERNAL INVESTIGATION

Curious, she opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank transfers.

Encrypted messages.

Names.

Dates.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Adrian Keller.

At first, she thought Adrian was helping Julian investigate a problem.

Until she saw the final document.

A payment authorization.

Signed by Adrian.

Millions transferred to offshore accounts.

The purpose:

Acquisition sabotage.

Julian listened without blinking.

"You found evidence against Adrian."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because the next day..."

She looked at Victoria.

"...someone came to my apartment."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

She already knew.

"They told me Adrian knew I had seen the files."

Julian's expression hardened.

"What happened?"

"They gave me a choice."

"What choice?"

Elena's voice became smaller.

"Leave quietly..."

A tear fell.

"...or watch Julian lose everything."

Julian looked devastated.

"You thought I would choose the company over you?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"I knew you would choose me."

"And that scared me."

"Because Adrian knew too."

She touched her stomach.

"He knew if I told you, you would destroy everything to protect me."

Julian whispered,

"So you left."

"I thought disappearing would keep you safe."

Victoria stepped forward.

"I told her to run."

Julian looked at his mother.

"You knew about the evidence?"

"Yes."

"And you still let her go?"

Victoria's face showed regret.

"I underestimated Adrian."

For once...

There was no arrogance in her voice.

Only exhaustion.

"I believed I could control the situation."

"You couldn't."

"No."

Victoria looked at Elena.

"I couldn't."

Adrian laughed softly.

"Such a touching reunion."

Marco turned toward him.

"You talk too much."

Adrian smiled.

"Because I know something you don't."

Marco's expression hardened.

"What?"

Adrian looked at Julian.

"The documents Elena found weren't the only thing she discovered."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"What else?"

Adrian smiled.

"Ask her about the night before she left."

Elena froze.

Julian noticed immediately.

His heart sank.

"Elena?"

She looked away.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

"Tell me."

She whispered:

"The night before I disappeared..."

A pause.

"I saw you."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

"I saw you meeting someone."

"Who?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know."

"But I heard you say..."

She struggled.

"You said you would handle the problem."

Julian stared.

"What problem?"

"I thought..."

Her voice cracked.

"I thought you knew about Adrian."

"I thought you were involved."

The room became silent.

Julian stepped back.

"You thought I was part of it?"

"I didn't know what to believe."

"Elena..."

"I was pregnant."

Her voice broke.

"I was terrified."

Julian ran a hand through his hair.

The pain on his face was impossible to hide.

"So all this time..."

"You thought I betrayed you."

"And I thought you abandoned me."

Neither spoke.

Two people.

Eight months.

Both suffering because they believed the worst.

Then Marco interrupted.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

He looked toward Julian.

"Who did you meet that night?"

Julian frowned.

"I don't remember."

"You don't remember?"

"It was a chaotic week."

Marco looked serious.

"Try."

Julian closed his eyes.

The memory returned slowly.

The office.

The rain outside.

The person standing across from him.

A voice.

A warning.

Then...

His eyes opened.

"No."

"What?"

Julian looked at Adrian.

"I wasn't meeting a stranger."

His expression changed.

"I was meeting..."

A terrible realization.

"...Adrian's assistant."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Marco noticed.

"Why?"

Julian looked toward him.

"Because she came to me with information."

"What information?"

Julian's voice became cold.

"She said Adrian was planning something."

Everyone turned toward Adrian.

For the first time...

His confidence cracked.

Only for a second.

But Julian saw it.

"You knew."

Adrian said nothing.

"You knew she warned me."

Still nothing.

Julian stepped closer.

"And you tried to erase my wife because you were afraid she would expose you."

Adrian finally smiled again.

But it was different now.

Forced.

"You're getting closer."

Suddenly...

A phone inside Adrian's jacket began ringing.

Everyone looked at it.

Marco signaled one of his men to take it.

The soldier retrieved the phone.

One message appeared on the screen.

Only five words.

THE BABY IS THE KEY.

Julian's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian looked directly at Elena.

And said:

"Because your child isn't just my problem."

A pause.

May you like

"It's the reason this entire war started."
