Chapter 4: Code Black

The emergency lights painted the hallway in pulses of crimson.

Every flash transformed the luxurious executive floor into something unrecognizable. Crystal decorations became jagged shadows. Gold-framed paintings looked like silent witnesses. Somewhere in the distance, guests screamed.

Julian instinctively moved Elena behind him.

His entire world narrowed to one objective.

Protect her. Protect their child.

The security officer drew his service pistol.

"Mr. Rossi, we have to move. Now!"

Another voice crackled over the radio.

"Three unidentified males... executive corridor... wearing maintenance uniforms... possibly armed..."

Maintenance uniforms.

Julian immediately understood.

"They're disguised."

The officer nodded.

"They bypassed the lobby."

Victoria remained frozen beside the conference table.

"They came much faster than I expected..."

Julian looked sharply at her.

"You knew they'd come."

"I feared they would."

"You should have warned us."

"I didn't know tonight would expose Elena."

Another burst of static interrupted them.

"Camera feed lost."

"Repeating... all cameras on Floors 27 through 30 are offline."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"This wasn't improvised."

"No," Victoria whispered.

"They planned this."

The hallway outside erupted with footsteps.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

Someone stopped directly outside the conference room.

No one breathed.

The doorknob moved slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Then...

Silence.

The security officer silently counted with his fingers.

Three...

Two...

One...

BOOM!

The door exploded inward.

Wood splintered across the carpet.

A smoke grenade rolled into the room, filling the air with thick gray clouds.

"Down!"

The officer fired twice toward the doorway.

Gunfire answered immediately.

Glass shattered.

The conference table overturned.

Julian threw himself over Elena, shielding her body with his own as fragments of crystal rained across the floor.

Victoria crawled behind a marble pillar.

The smoke became so thick they could barely see.

Through the haze, a calm male voice echoed.

"Mr. Rossi."

Julian recognized immediately that it wasn't a hotel employee.

"We're not here for you."

No response.

"We only want the woman."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"Then you've come to the wrong place."

The stranger chuckled.

"You always were predictable."

The gunfire stopped.

For several tense seconds...

Only the fire alarms continued screaming.

Then another voice came over the attackers' radio.

"Target confirmed."

"Pregnant female."

"Proceed."

Julian's blood ran cold.

They weren't guessing.

They knew exactly who Elena was.

The security officer whispered,

"There's an emergency stairwell behind the bookshelf."

Julian looked over.

A hidden service exit.

Designed for VIP evacuations.

"Take her," the officer said.

"I'll hold them."

Julian shook his head.

"You'll die."

The officer smiled grimly.

"My job is to make sure you don't."

Before Julian could answer, another burst of gunfire tore through the room.

The officer returned fire.

"Go!"

Julian grabbed Elena's hand.

"We're leaving."

She hesitated.

"The others..."

"We can't help them if we're dead."

Victoria suddenly stood.

"Wait."

She hurried to the overturned conference table and picked up the black folder.

Julian frowned.

"Forget the documents."

"I can't."

"Why?"

She looked directly at him.

"Because the originals are inside."

Julian's expression changed.

"The originals?"

"The forged evidence... the surveillance reports... names."

She lowered her voice.

"And the payment records."

Julian understood immediately.

"Proof."

Victoria nodded.

"Enough to destroy everyone involved."

The group reached the hidden door.

The officer pulled the emergency lever.

Nothing happened.

He pulled again.

Still nothing.

His face darkened.

"They locked it electronically."

Victoria whispered,

"They're trapping us."

Another explosion rocked the hallway.

This time much closer.

The attackers were advancing room by room.

Julian scanned the conference room.

Windows.

Thirty floors above the city.

No escape.

One entrance.

Blocked.

One hidden exit.

Disabled.

They were boxed in.

Elena suddenly spoke.

"There."

She pointed toward a ceiling access panel.

The maintenance hatch.

Julian looked up.

"It's too small."

"It leads into the ventilation system."

Victoria stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"I cleaned these rooms."

Of course she did.

For months she'd worked every corner of this hotel.

She knew passages no executive ever noticed.

Julian smiled for the first time all night.

"You just saved our lives."

The officer boosted Julian upward.

He forced open the panel.

Cold air rushed down.

The ventilation shaft stretched into darkness.

Julian climbed inside first.

Then reached back.

"Elena."

She carefully handed him the black folder.

Then, with obvious difficulty because of her pregnancy, began climbing.

Julian pulled her gently into the shaft.

Victoria followed.

Finally the officer climbed after them.

Seconds later...

The conference room door burst open beneath them.

Through the vent grating Julian could see three armed men.

Black tactical clothing beneath maintenance jackets.

Faces hidden.

One of them looked around calmly.

"They escaped."

Another answered,

"They can't leave the floor."

The first man smiled.

"They don't have to."

He reached into his pocket.

Removed a small device.

Pressed a button.

Deep below them...

A deafening explosion shook the building.

The entire ventilation shaft lurched violently.

Elena cried out as the metal beneath them bent.

"What was that?"

The officer looked horrified.

"They've blown the elevator core."

The hotel trembled.

Emergency lights flickered.

Concrete dust filled the vents.

A second explosion followed.

Then a third.

Julian understood.

"They're bringing down the central structure."

Victoria stared in disbelief.

"They're willing to destroy a five-star hotel..."

Julian finished the sentence.

"...to erase one witness."

The ventilation shaft groaned.

Metal supports began snapping one by one.

The officer shouted,

"Move!"

They crawled as fast as possible.

Julian stayed beside Elena, helping her over every junction.

Behind them, the shaft collapsed section by section.

A rain of sparks chased them through the darkness.

Suddenly...

Elena stopped.

She gasped sharply.

Julian turned.

"What is it?"

Her face twisted in pain.

"My stomach..."

Another sharp breath.

Then another.

Victoria immediately understood.

"No..."

Elena grabbed Julian's arm.

"I think..."

She struggled to speak.

"...the baby..."

A warm liquid spread across the metal beneath her knees.

Julian's heart stopped.

Blood.

The security officer looked once and his face turned pale.

Victoria whispered the words Julian prayed he would never hear.

"She's bleeding."

Elena closed her eyes, fighting another wave of pain.

Very quietly...

Almost too quietly to hear...

She whispered,

May you like

"I think... I'm going into labor."
