Chapter 6: The Friend Behind the Mask

The sound of Adrian Keller's footsteps echoed through the mechanical room.
Slow.
Confident.
Almost casual.
As if he hadn't just walked into a battlefield.
As if he hadn't just revealed himself as the person Julian trusted most.
Julian stared at him.
For fifteen years...
Adrian had been more than a business partner.
He had been the man who stood beside him when Rossi Industries nearly collapsed.
The man who slept in conference rooms during impossible negotiations.
The man who attended Julian's wedding.
The man who held his newborn nephew's photo and joked about becoming the child's favorite uncle.
The man Julian would have trusted with his life.
And now...
He stood among the generators as the architect of everything that destroyed his family.
"No."
The word escaped Julian's mouth quietly.
Adrian tilted his head.
"That's all you have to say?"
Julian stepped in front of Elena.
"You."
A small smile appeared on Adrian's face.
"Me."
Victoria's expression hardened.
"I knew there was someone higher."
Adrian looked amused.
"Of course you did, Victoria."
He glanced at her.
"You were always the smartest person in the room."
"Except this time."
Victoria's voice became cold.
"You miscalculated."
Adrian laughed.
"Did I?"
He looked around the damaged mechanical floor.
"Your hotel is collapsing."
"Your security team is compromised."
"Your wife is exhausted."
"And your company will be destroyed by morning."
He smiled.
"Tell me where I miscalculated."
Julian clenched his fists.
"Why?"
Adrian's smile faded slightly.
"Why?"
"Yes."
"Why did you do this?"
For the first time...
Adrian looked genuinely surprised.
"You still don't understand?"
"Then explain."
Adrian walked closer.
"The Rossi empire was never yours alone."
Julian stared.
"What?"
"You inherited a machine built by people smarter and more ruthless than you."
"People like you?"
"Exactly."
Adrian stopped a few feet away.
"You thought friendship mattered."
His expression changed.
"That's your weakness, Julian."
"You believe people stay loyal because they love you."
"They don't."
"They stay loyal because they benefit from you."
Elena whispered,
"Adrian..."
He looked at her.
"You remember me."
"I remember you helping Julian."
"Helping?"
Adrian smiled bitterly.
"No."
"I was building."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"Building what?"
"My future."
A contraction suddenly hit Elena.
She grabbed Julian's arm.
He immediately turned toward her.
"Elena?"
Her face tightened in pain.
Adrian watched silently.
Then he sighed.
"This is unfortunate."
Julian looked back at him.
"You threatened a pregnant woman."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
"I threatened a problem."
His words were so cold that Julian felt something inside him break.
"You were never like this."
Adrian laughed quietly.
"Actually..."
He stepped closer.
"I was always like this."
The memory came rushing back.
Fifteen years earlier.
A young Julian Rossi sitting in a small office.
The company was failing.
Investors were leaving.
Employees were being laid off.
Everyone expected the Rossi name to disappear.
Except Adrian.
He had walked in carrying a stack of financial reports.
"I can fix this."
Julian had trusted him.
Together they rebuilt everything.
But Julian never noticed something.
Adrian wasn't helping him rebuild.
He was studying the foundation.
Learning where to strike.
"You know what I hated most about you?"
Adrian asked.
Julian said nothing.
"You had everything."
"The name."
"The money."
"The family."
"The respect."
"And somehow..."
His voice became bitter.
"You still acted like you were the victim."
Julian stared.
"You are insane."
"No."
Adrian smiled.
"I'm patient."
Victoria stepped forward.
"You manipulated the board."
"Yes."
"You created the evidence against Elena."
"Yes."
"You threatened her."
"Not personally."
Victoria's eyes sharpened.
"You used other people."
Adrian nodded.
"That's what separates professionals from amateurs."
Julian's expression became disgusted.
"You ruined my life."
"No."
Adrian corrected him.
"I improved it."
"What?"
"You were weak."
"You cared about a woman more than your empire."
"You would have given away everything for her."
He pointed at Elena.
"She was the chain around your ankle."
Julian looked at Elena.
Then back at Adrian.
"No."
His voice became steady.
"She was the reason I survived."
For a brief moment...
Adrian's expression changed.
A tiny crack.
Jealousy.
Anger.
Then it disappeared.
A noise came from above.
A helicopter.
Everyone looked upward.
Adrian smiled.
"My extraction team has arrived."
Julian's heart sank.
Adrian turned toward the exit.
"This is where we say goodbye."
But before he could leave...
Elena spoke.
"Adrian."
Everyone stopped.
Her voice was weak.
But clear.
"You made one mistake."
Adrian looked back.
"And what is that?"
"You thought I was the thing that made Julian weak."
She slowly stood with Julian's help.
"But you never understood..."
She looked at her husband.
"He became stronger because someone finally gave him something worth protecting."
Adrian stared.
Then laughed.
"Beautiful."
A slow clap.
"Really."
He looked at Julian.
"That is exactly why you'll lose."
Suddenly...
The satellite phone on the floor rang.
Everyone froze.
Julian looked at it.
Nobody moved.
It rang again.
Adrian frowned.
"Who is calling?"
Julian slowly picked it up.
A voice came through.
Weak.
Distorted.
But recognizable.
"Julian..."
His eyes widened.
"Marco?"
Adrian's expression changed.
Impossible.
"How..."
Marco's voice continued.
"Sir..."
A cough.
"Don't trust the phone call."
Julian looked at the device.
"What?"
"The man who called you..."
Static.
"...wasn't me."
Everyone looked at Adrian.
The color disappeared from his face.
Marco continued.
"He's been using my voice."
The room went silent.
Adrian had not intercepted the call.
He had created a fake one.
But then...
Where was the real Marco?
The answer came seconds later.
A loud crash echoed from the upper floors.
Then...
Gunfire.
A lot of it.
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
For the first time...
He looked worried.
Julian noticed.
And understood.
Someone else was coming.
Someone Adrian hadn't expected.
The mechanical room doors suddenly exploded open.
A group of armed men entered.
But they weren't Adrian's men.
They wore dark tactical uniforms.
The man leading them removed his helmet.
Julian recognized him immediately.
Marco Moretti.
Alive.
Bloodied.
Angry.
"Mr. Rossi."
His eyes moved to Adrian.
Then narrowed.
"Looks like we finally found the traitor."
Adrian took one step backward.
For the first time that night...
The hunter looked like the hunted.
Marco raised his weapon.
"Adrian Keller."
"You are under arrest."
But Adrian didn't panic.
Instead...
He smiled.
A slow, confident smile.
Because he knew something they didn't.
He looked directly at Elena.
And whispered:
"Ask your wife what happened eight months ago."
Julian turned.
Confused.
"Elena?"
Adrian's smile widened.
"Because she never told you the whole story."
The room went silent.
Elena's face turned pale.
And Julian realized...
The betrayal he had uncovered wasn't finished.
There was still another secret buried beneath everything.
May you like
A secret his wife had been carrying for eight months.
