Chapter 5: Between Life and Death

The metallic walls of the ventilation shaft echoed with Elena's cry.
Julian felt every muscle in his body lock.
Blood.
It wasn't much.
But it was enough.
Enough to turn confidence into terror.
Enough to remind him that no amount of wealth could bargain with time.
He dropped to his knees beside her.
"Elena... look at me."
She opened her eyes, forcing herself to stay conscious.
"I'm trying."
Another contraction hit.
She bit her lip hard enough to draw blood rather than scream.
Julian grabbed both her hands.
"No, don't hold it in."
"I don't want them to hear us."
Even now...
Even while bleeding...
She was still thinking about protecting everyone else.
Victoria crawled beside them.
"I need to see."
Elena hesitated.
Victoria spoke with surprising gentleness.
"I'm not your mother-in-law right now."
She reached forward.
"I'm just a woman who's delivered one child."
After a brief pause, Elena nodded.
Victoria carefully examined the bleeding.
The security officer held his flashlight steady.
Several unbearable seconds passed.
Finally Victoria released a slow breath.
"It's not heavy."
Julian immediately asked,
"What does that mean?"
"It could be caused by stress."
"Or?"
She looked him directly in the eyes.
"Or premature labor."
Julian's stomach twisted.
"How far along is she?"
Elena answered softly.
"Thirty-four weeks."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Too early."
Another explosion shook the building.
The ventilation duct vibrated violently.
Dust drifted from every seam.
The security officer checked the map on his tablet.
"The shaft leads to the mechanical level."
"How far?"
"About two hundred meters."
Julian looked at Elena.
"Can you crawl?"
She nodded.
"I have to."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You don't."
Without another word...
He carefully lifted her into his arms.
She immediately protested.
"You'll slow down."
"I don't care."
"The others..."
"I said I don't care."
His voice softened.
"I lost eight months."
"I'm not losing another minute."
Elena looked at him.
Really looked at him.
For the first time since the lobby...
She saw the man she had married.
Not the billionaire.
Not the CEO.
Just Julian.
The man who used to carry her upstairs when she pretended to fall asleep on movie nights.
Tears quietly rolled down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry."
He kissed her forehead.
"We'll apologize later."
The four continued crawling through the narrow shaft.
Every movement echoed with groaning steel.
The officer suddenly raised his fist.
"Stop."
Everyone froze.
Voices.
Directly beneath them.
Julian slowly peered through the vent.
Three armed men stood inside the maintenance corridor.
One of them spoke into an earpiece.
"Target likely entered ventilation."
Another answered,
"Seal every exit."
The third calmly unfolded a blueprint of the hotel.
Julian's eyes narrowed.
They weren't ordinary criminals.
They knew the building.
Every hallway.
Every escape route.
Every blind spot.
Victoria whispered,
"Former military."
The officer nodded.
"I was thinking the same."
The conversation below continued.
"What about Rossi?"
"Leave him alive if possible."
"And the woman?"
A brief silence.
Then the leader answered coldly.
"No witnesses."
Julian felt Elena tremble in his arms.
He leaned close to her ear.
"They won't touch you."
She whispered,
"You can't promise that."
"I can."
"How?"
His answer came without hesitation.
"They'll have to go through me."
Suddenly...
The ventilation grate beneath them shifted.
One of the attackers had noticed.
He looked up.
"There!"
Gunfire erupted instantly.
Bullets tore through the metal duct.
Sparks exploded around them.
"Crawl!"
The security officer fired through the grate while Julian ran on hands and knees carrying Elena.
The ventilation shaft echoed with ricochets.
A bullet pierced the duct inches behind Victoria.
Another punched through the ceiling ahead.
The entire tunnel shook.
Then...
The impossible happened.
The section beneath the officer collapsed.
Metal screamed.
The floor gave way.
"No!"
Julian reached back.
Too late.
The officer fell through the broken vent into the corridor below.
He hit the concrete hard.
His pistol slid away.
The attackers surrounded him immediately.
Julian could only watch through the collapsing duct.
The officer looked up.
Their eyes met.
He smiled.
A tired...
Peaceful...
Almost relieved smile.
Then he shouted at the top of his lungs,
"RUN!"
He grabbed one attacker's leg.
The man stumbled.
The other two opened fire.
The gunshots echoed endlessly.
Then...
Silence.
Julian closed his eyes.
Another person had died protecting his family.
Victoria quietly crossed herself.
"He bought us time."
Julian nodded once.
He couldn't speak.
Twenty minutes later...
The shaft finally ended.
Julian kicked open the maintenance hatch.
Fresh air rushed inside.
They climbed into the mechanical level beneath the hotel.
Massive generators hummed around them.
Pipes stretched endlessly across the ceiling.
The alarms sounded more distant here.
For the first time that night...
They were alone.
Julian gently lowered Elena onto a folded maintenance blanket.
She was breathing harder now.
Another contraction came.
This one stronger.
Victoria checked her pulse.
"Five minutes apart."
Julian's face drained of color.
"What?"
"The contractions."
"No..."
"It's progressing."
Elena looked terrified.
"I can't have the baby here."
"No," Julian whispered.
"You won't."
Julian pulled out his phone.
Still no signal.
The hotel's communication network had been completely jammed.
Victoria reached into her purse.
"I have something."
She removed an old satellite phone.
Julian looked surprised.
"You've had that this whole time?"
"I never travel without it."
She handed it to him.
"It bypasses local networks."
Julian dialed immediately.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Finally...
A familiar voice answered.
"Director Moretti."
Julian nearly collapsed with relief.
Marco Moretti.
Former commander of Italy's elite anti-terror unit.
Now head of Julian's private global security division.
"Marco."
"Sir?"
"I need immediate extraction."
There was a pause.
Then Marco's voice changed completely.
"What happened?"
Julian looked at Elena.
"My wife has been found."
Another pause.
Then Marco quietly said,
"So... she's alive."
"Yes."
"And she's pregnant."
"I know."
"I need medical evacuation now."
Marco answered instantly.
"I'm already in the city."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
"I've been searching for Mrs. Rossi for eight months."
Julian looked stunned.
"You never stopped?"
"No, sir."
"I simply stopped reporting failures."
Julian felt his throat tighten.
"How long?"
Marco's answer was simple.
"Every single day."
Marco continued.
"I have twelve operators nearby."
Julian finally felt hope.
"How long until you reach us?"
"Approximately..."
Static interrupted the call.
Then another voice replaced Marco's.
A calm.
Unknown.
Male voice.
"I'm afraid Mr. Moretti won't be arriving."
Julian's blood froze.
The stranger chuckled softly.
"You really should choose your friends more carefully."
The line went dead.
At that exact moment...
Somewhere deep inside the mechanical level...
A slow clap echoed through the darkness.
One clap.
Then another.
Then another.
A tall man stepped out from behind the generators.
Expensively dressed.
Perfectly composed.
Smiling.
Julian recognized him instantly.
His oldest friend.
His business partner.
The man who had stood beside him for nearly fifteen years.
Adrian Keller.
Adrian smiled warmly.
"Julian..."
He glanced toward Elena.
May you like
"It took us long enough to find her."
