Chapter 1: The Woman Who Said "Sir"

Julian Rossi had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without his pulse changing.

He had stood before hostile boards, ruthless competitors, and governments demanding impossible concessions. In every room, he had remained calm.

But nothing in his life had prepared him for seeing his pregnant wife pushing a housekeeping cart through the lobby of one of his own luxury hotels.

The silence between them stretched painfully.

Elena kept her hands firmly wrapped around the metal handle.

She knew if she loosened her grip even slightly, they would begin to shake.

"Please excuse me, sir."

She tried to push the cart past him.

Julian stepped directly into her path.

"No."

His voice was low.

"You don't get to call me that."

Camila sighed loudly.

"Oh, come on, Julian."

She looked Elena up and down, her expression filled with barely concealed contempt.

"She's obviously moved on."

Elena never looked at her.

"Please move, sir."

Julian ignored the request.

"What happened?"

No answer.

"I searched for you."

Silence.

"I hired investigators."

Nothing.

"I filed missing person reports in three countries."

Still nothing.

His breathing became uneven.

"I thought you were dead."

For the first time, Elena's composure cracked.

Only for a heartbeat.

Her eyelashes trembled.

Then she whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Those two words shattered something inside Julian.

"Sorry?"

His voice rose despite himself.

"Eight months, Elena."

"Eight months!"

"I came home and you were gone."

"Our bedroom was empty."

"Your phone disappeared."

"Your passport was gone."

"There wasn't even a note."

"You vanished."

Guests had begun gathering openly now.

Employees exchanged frightened glances.

Nobody dared intervene.

Everyone knew who Julian Rossi was.

Everyone also knew that no scandal involving him stayed quiet for long.

The hotel manager hurried across the lobby.

"Mr. Rossi..."

His smile looked painfully forced.

"If there's any issue, perhaps we could continue this discussion privately?"

Julian didn't even acknowledge him.

His entire world consisted of the woman standing before him.

Then...

His eyes dropped again.

To her stomach.

The child moved.

It was unmistakable.

Even beneath the loose uniform.

A tiny kick.

Julian instinctively reached forward.

Elena immediately stepped backward.

The movement was so sudden that she nearly lost her balance.

Julian froze.

She had once loved his touch.

Now she recoiled from it.

His hand slowly fell.

"Is..."

He struggled to finish.

"...is that our baby?"

The lobby became impossibly quiet.

Elena closed her eyes.

When she finally answered, her voice was almost inaudible.

"Yes."

Julian's knees nearly gave out.

For several seconds he simply stared.

"Our child..."

She nodded once.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

"You never even tried."

"I couldn't."

The exact same answer.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Every response was the same impossible wall.

"I couldn't."

Camila had clearly reached the end of her patience.

She stepped between them.

"This is ridiculous."

She looked directly at Elena.

"If you wanted money, you could have just asked."

Julian turned sharply.

"Enough."

Camila blinked.

"What?"

"I said enough."

"I wasn't talking to you."

"I know exactly who you were talking to."

His tone had become ice.

"And you will never speak to my wife like that again."

"My wife."

The words echoed through the lobby.

Camila's face went pale.

"You told me the divorce papers were being prepared."

"They were."

"So?"

"They were never signed."

"You've been dating me while you're still married?"

Julian looked exhausted.

"I believed my wife abandoned me."

Camila laughed bitterly.

"This is unbelievable."

She grabbed her purse.

"I'll be waiting upstairs."

"No."

Julian didn't even look at her.

"I think it's better if you leave."

Her mouth fell open.

"You're choosing her?"

"I never stopped choosing her."

Camila stared at him for several long seconds.

Then she turned and stormed toward the revolving doors.

Dozens of guests pretended not to watch.

Nobody succeeded.

The entire lobby followed her exit with their eyes.

Only after the doors closed did Julian speak again.

"I'm taking you home."

Elena shook her head immediately.

"No."

"You don't belong here."

"I work here."

"You don't."

"I do."

"No."

His voice cracked.

"My wife does not scrub floors."

Something inside Elena finally ignited.

"No?"

She laughed.

It wasn't joyful.

It was the laugh of someone who had cried too much to cry anymore.

"And where exactly should I have gone?"

Julian stared.

"The mansion?"

"The empty nursery?"

"The room where every memory reminded me of what I lost?"

He frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

She stopped.

Too late.

She had said too much.

Julian caught it instantly.

"What did you lose?"

Elena looked away.

The hotel manager suddenly interrupted.

"Elena."

His tone carried unmistakable warning.

"Room 1812 requested additional towels."

Julian turned.

"You knew."

The manager swallowed.

"I'm sorry?"

"You knew who she was."

The man's face lost all color.

"I..."

"You hired my wife."

Silence.

"You watched a pregnant woman scrub my hotel floors."

"I..."

"And you never informed me."

Sweat appeared across the manager's forehead.

"I signed a confidentiality agreement."

Julian narrowed his eyes.

"What agreement?"

"I..."

The manager stopped himself.

Too late again.

Julian stepped closer.

"Who made you sign it?"

"I can't say."

"You will."

"I legally cannot."

Julian's voice became terrifyingly calm.

"I own this hotel."

"I know."

"I employ everyone in this building."

"Yes."

"So who exactly convinced you to hide my wife from me?"

The manager's lips trembled.

Then...

A new voice answered.

"I did."

Every head turned.

An elegantly dressed woman descended the grand staircase overlooking the lobby.

She moved with practiced confidence.

Tailored white suit.

Pearl earrings.

Silver hair arranged perfectly.

Every employee immediately lowered their heads.

Julian's face hardened.

"Mother."

Victoria Rossi smiled politely.

"My dear son."

She looked toward Elena.

"What an unfortunate coincidence."

Julian felt his stomach sink.

His mother had never believed Elena belonged in the Rossi family.

From the day they married, Victoria had made her opinion painfully clear.

Elena came from a middle-class schoolteacher's family.

Julian came from generations of billionaires.

Victoria had tolerated the marriage.

She had never accepted it.

Julian slowly connected impossible pieces inside his mind.

The disappearance.

The silence.

The secrecy.

The hotel.

The confidentiality agreement.

His mother.

"No..."

His voice barely escaped.

Victoria folded her hands gracefully.

"I'm afraid this conversation has become rather public."

She smiled pleasantly.

"Perhaps we should continue it somewhere more... private."

Julian looked at Elena.

She had gone completely pale.

Not with surprise.

With fear.

Real fear.

And in that moment, Julian realized something horrifying.

His wife wasn't afraid of him.

May you like

She was terrified of his mother.
