Chapter 10: The Truth Beneath the Lie

The underground tunnel became silent.

Not peaceful.

Not safe.

Silent in the way a courtroom becomes silent before a verdict is announced.

Everyone looked at Elena.

Julian most of all.

And that was the part that hurt her.

Not Lorenzo's accusation.

Not Adrian's betrayal.

Not the armed men surrounding them.

Julian's eyes.

The man who had crossed an entire city to find her.

The man who had protected her from bullets.

The man who had promised he would never let her face anything alone.

Now...

For a single moment...

He didn't know whether to protect her or question her.

Elena slowly lowered her eyes.

"Julian..."

She couldn't finish.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"You deserve the truth."

Julian turned toward the old man.

"You've said that twice."

His voice was cold.

"Everyone here keeps promising me truth."

A pause.

"Then everyone gives me another secret."

Lorenzo studied him.

"You sound like your father."

Julian's expression changed.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"He also believed trust was stronger than blood."

Lorenzo looked toward Victoria.

"And he was betrayed by the people closest to him."

Victoria's face hardened.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

For the first time that night...

Victoria looked afraid.

Not concerned.

Not controlled.

Afraid.

Julian noticed immediately.

"Mother."

She looked away.

"What is happening?"

No answer.

"Mother."

Her silence became unbearable.

Then she whispered:

"Your father did not die in an accident."

The words stopped everything.

Julian stared.

"What?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I lied to you."

His expression changed from confusion to disbelief.

"My whole life..."

"I know."

"You let me believe he was gone."

"I was protecting you."

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"You were protecting yourself."

Victoria accepted the accusation.

Maybe because it was true.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"Your father discovered the truth about the family trust."

Julian looked at him.

"What truth?"

"The trust was never meant to create a ruler."

"It was meant to prevent one."

Julian frowned.

Lorenzo continued.

"Your grandfather created the structure after watching generations of wealthy families destroy themselves chasing control."

"The Rossi empire was designed so no single person could own everything."

"The company."

"The properties."

"The investments."

"They all required cooperation."

Julian looked toward Adrian.

"And he wanted to break that system."

Lorenzo nodded.

"Yes."

"But why Elena?"

Lorenzo's expression changed.

"Because Elena found something."

Julian looked at his wife.

"Something besides the documents?"

Elena was silent.

Then...

She reached into the pocket of her old housekeeping uniform.

Everyone stared.

She pulled out a small object.

A tiny silver key.

Julian frowned.

"What is that?"

"The reason I disappeared."

Eight months earlier.

After finding Adrian's documents...

Elena had searched deeper.

Not because she wanted power.

Not because she wanted money.

Because she realized something.

The documents Adrian had hidden were not the complete story.

Someone had removed pages.

Someone had taken evidence.

Someone had covered up a much older crime.

Then she found the key.

Hidden inside Julian's father's old study.

A place no one had entered since his death.

The key opened a private safety deposit box.

Inside...

Was a letter.

Written by Julian's father.

Julian stared at the key.

"You had this all along?"

Elena nodded.

"I wanted to give it to you."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because Adrian found out."

"And?"

"He told me if I gave it to you..."

Her voice broke.

"...you would become his next target."

Julian stepped closer.

"Elena."

She looked at him.

"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you."

"I left because I loved you too much."

For a moment...

No one spoke.

Even Lorenzo remained silent.

Then Adrian laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

"You still don't understand."

Julian turned.

"What?"

Adrian smiled.

"You're all chasing the wrong secret."

"What does that mean?"

"The key."

His eyes moved to Elena.

"That key isn't the only thing she found."

Julian's expression darkened.

"Stop playing games."

"I'm not."

Adrian looked at Lorenzo.

"Tell him."

Lorenzo didn't respond.

That was enough.

Julian looked between them.

"What?"

Finally Lorenzo spoke.

"Elena discovered that the Rossi trust was not the only inheritance."

Julian frowned.

"What else?"

"The original founder of the Rossi empire left a private archive."

"An archive containing?"

"The names of everyone who manipulated the company."

Victoria looked stunned.

"That archive was destroyed."

Lorenzo smiled slightly.

"No."

"Your husband hid it."

Julian froze.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Lorenzo looked directly at Elena.

"She knows."

Julian slowly turned.

"Elena."

She closed her eyes.

"I didn't want this."

"Didn't want what?"

"To become part of this."

She looked around.

"All these people."

"The money."

"The power."

"The lies."

"I just wanted us."

Her hand moved over her stomach.

"I wanted our child to grow up somewhere normal."

Julian's expression softened.

But before he could answer...

Lorenzo interrupted.

"That is exactly why Adrian wanted her gone."

Julian looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because Elena was the only person in this entire family who didn't want power."

"She couldn't be controlled by greed."

"That made her dangerous."

Suddenly...

A gunshot echoed.

Everyone reacted instantly.

The tunnel wall exploded with dust.

One of Lorenzo's men collapsed.

"Ambush!"

Chaos erupted.

Marco's team returned fire.

Julian pulled Elena behind a concrete pillar.

Lorenzo's guards engaged the attackers.

But Julian noticed something.

The shooters weren't aiming at Lorenzo.

They weren't aiming at Marco.

They were aiming at Elena.

Again.

Always Elena.

Julian shouted:

"Why her?"

Lorenzo's face turned serious.

"Because they don't want the child."

Julian looked at him.

"Then what do they want?"

Lorenzo answered:

"They want the child to never know the truth."

Another shot fired.

Closer.

Julian held Elena tighter.

Then...

A bullet struck the ground beside them.

Elena suddenly gasped.

Not from fear.

From pain.

Julian looked down.

Her face had changed.

The contraction was different.

Stronger.

She whispered:

"Julian..."

He immediately knew.

The baby was coming.

Not tomorrow.

Not later.

Now.

Marco shouted from across the tunnel:

"We need to move!"

Julian looked around.

Gunfire.

Enemies.

A collapsing tunnel.

His wife in labor.

Their child about to enter a world already fighting over them.

Then Lorenzo said something that changed everything:

"There is a safe room ahead."

Julian looked at him.

"Why should I trust you?"

Lorenzo met his eyes.

"Because unlike everyone else here..."

A pause.

"I never wanted the child."

Julian narrowed his eyes.

"What did you want?"

Lorenzo looked toward Elena.

"To protect the person who found the truth."

Another explosion shook the tunnel.

The ceiling began cracking.

Marco yelled:

"Move now!"

Julian lifted Elena carefully.

They ran deeper underground.

Toward the hidden room.

Toward the birth of their child.

Toward the final secret waiting beneath the Rossi empire.

And behind them...

Adrian Keller watched the chaos unfold.

Smiling.

Because while everyone was looking underground...

He had already activated his final move.

A message appeared on his phone.

PHASE TWO COMPLETE.

THE HEIR WILL BE BORN WITHOUT THE FATHER.

Adrian looked at the screen.

Then whispered:

May you like

"Now we take everything."
