Chapter 9 The Name Hidden in the Archive

The explosion rolled through the underground bunker like a wave.
Concrete dust drifted from the ceiling.
Warning lights flashed crimson.
A siren began to howl.
One of Gabriel Voss's guards pressed a hand to his earpiece.
"They've breached the outer security gate."
Gabriel didn't even turn around.
"How many?"
"Approximately twenty officers."
"Lead by Detective Daniel Ross."
Gabriel smiled faintly.
"Earlier than expected."
Arthur frowned.
"You wanted them here."
"I've learned that people reveal their true loyalties only under pressure."
He looked toward Evelyn.
"Today, everyone will choose a side."
Three hundred yards away...
Ross crouched behind a reinforced blast door.
SWAT officers lined both sides of the tunnel.
A bomb technician examined the locking mechanism.
"This isn't residential construction."
"No."
Ross replied.
"This place was designed like a military bunker."
Marcus knelt beside him.
"You really think Lily is inside?"
Ross nodded.
"If we're right..."
"She's been the target from the beginning."
The technician stood.
"I can breach it."
"How long?"
"Thirty seconds."
Ross looked at his team.
"When that door opens..."
"Nobody fires unless I give the order."
Inside the command chamber...
Evelyn still couldn't process what she'd heard.
"My daughter's blood..."
"What does that even mean?"
Gabriel walked calmly toward a steel cabinet.
He entered a twelve-digit code.
The door hissed open.
Inside lay dozens of yellowed files.
He selected one marked:
STERLING FAMILY
Without hesitation, he tossed it to Evelyn.
She caught it instinctively.
"Read page twelve."
Her fingers trembled as she opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
Medical records.
Birth certificates.
Handwritten notes.
Everything looked decades old.
She found page twelve.
At the top...
A heading.
PROJECT HEIR
Below it...
A family tree.
Arthur Sterling.
His daughter...
Evelyn Sterling.
Then...
Lily Whitmore.
But something was wrong.
Where Julian's name should have appeared...
Another name had been typed.
Father: UNKNOWN
Evelyn stared.
"This..."
"This is impossible."
Gabriel folded his hands.
"Julian Whitmore is not Lily's biological father."
Silence.
The words struck like lightning.
Arthur closed his eyes.
He had prayed this moment would never come.
Evelyn slowly looked at him.
"You knew."
Arthur said nothing.
"You knew?"
His silence became the answer.
Tears welled in Evelyn's eyes.
"For six years..."
"You let me believe..."
Arthur whispered,
"I was trying to protect you."
"By lying?"
"By keeping you alive."
Across the room...
Lily frowned.
"Mom?"
"What does biological father mean?"
Evelyn couldn't answer.
Her voice had abandoned her.
Adrian quietly stepped closer.
"It means..."
"The man who raised you..."
"...may not be the man who gave you life."
The little girl looked confused.
"But Daddy taught me to ride a bicycle."
"He read bedtime stories."
"He carried me when I was sick."
She looked at Evelyn.
"He's still my daddy."
Evelyn finally knelt and hugged her tightly.
"Nothing..."
"...will ever change that."
Arthur looked away.
Even Gabriel remained silent for a moment.
Some truths...
Were heavier than bullets.
Suddenly...
A sharp alarm echoed through the bunker.
One of Gabriel's technicians shouted,
"Director!"
"The police breached the first security door!"
Gabriel glanced at the monitor.
Ross's team advanced cautiously through the tunnel.
He nodded once.
"Good."
Then he pressed a button beneath the control console.
Far above...
Inside Haven House...
Hidden steel walls began sliding into place.
Entire corridors shifted.
Staircases rotated.
Doors vanished behind moving panels.
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"The whole building..."
"...is changing."
Ross's expression darkened.
"It's a maze."
Back in the bunker...
Arthur seized the moment.
While everyone's attention shifted to the monitors...
He suddenly lunged toward Gabriel.
A single punch.
Fast.
Precise.
Gabriel staggered backward.
The room erupted.
Guards raised their rifles.
Adrian moved instantly.
He kicked one rifle aside.
Another discharged accidentally.
The bullet shattered a control screen.
Sparks exploded.
Darkness swallowed half the bunker.
Arthur grabbed Evelyn.
"Run!"
She didn't hesitate.
Lifting Lily into her arms, she sprinted toward the emergency corridor.
Adrian covered them, knocking another guard into a steel railing.
Gabriel calmly wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.
Then...
He laughed.
"Exactly as planned."
Ross heard the gunfire echo through the tunnel.
"Move!"
The SWAT team surged forward.
They reached a massive steel intersection.
Three identical hallways stretched ahead.
Marcus looked around.
"Which one?"
Ross noticed fresh footprints in the dust.
Small.
Child-sized.
"This way."
Meanwhile...
Julian Whitmore sat alone inside his office.
The gala disaster had already dominated every news channel.
Stock prices had begun to fall.
Investors refused to answer his calls.
His phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered irritably.
"What?"
A calm voice replied.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"You've been looking for your wife."
Julian froze.
"Who is this?"
"I know where she is."
His grip tightened.
"What do you want?"
The caller chuckled.
"I don't want anything."
"I simply thought..."
"...you deserved to know..."
"...that the little girl you've called your daughter for six years..."
"...was never yours."
Click.
The line went dead.
Julian stared at the phone.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
He whispered.
"That's impossible."
Then...
Slowly...
He opened his desk drawer.
Inside lay an unopened envelope.
A DNA test kit.
Ordered six years ago.
Never used.
Because he had trusted Evelyn completely.
For the first time in his life...
Julian wondered if trust had been his greatest mistake.
Deep beneath Haven House...
Evelyn, Arthur, Adrian, and Lily reached a massive circular chamber.
Ancient stone walls surrounded them.
At the center stood an enormous iron vault door.
Unlike everything else in the bunker...
This door looked centuries old.
Its surface bore two keyholes.
Side by side.
Arthur whispered,
"The Archive."
Gabriel's voice echoed from the darkness behind them.
"You've finally arrived."
He stepped into the chamber, surrounded by armed guards.
In one hand...
He held the first brass key.
He smiled at Evelyn.
"Now..."
"All we need..."
May you like
"...is yours."
