Chapter 1 The Slap at the Charity Gala

The grand ballroom shimmered beneath towering crystal chandeliers.

Champagne glasses sparkled.

A live orchestra floated elegant melodies across hundreds of the city's wealthiest guests.

Tonight's charity gala wasn't merely a fundraiser.

It was where fortunes were measured, alliances were forged, and reputations could be destroyed with a single whisper.

At the center of it all stood Julian Whitmore.

Thirty-eight.

CEO of Whitmore Holdings.

Handsome.

Powerful.

Admired by everyone.

Or so it seemed.

Beside him stood his wife, Evelyn Whitmore.

Unlike the women glittering in diamonds worth small fortunes, Evelyn wore a simple navy evening gown.

No expensive jewelry.

No designer handbag.

She looked almost invisible among the elite.

Holding her hand was six-year-old Lily.

The little girl gazed around the ballroom with wide curious eyes.

Everything fascinated her.

The chandeliers.

The flowers.

The musicians.

She had never attended one of her father's corporate galas before.

Julian had insisted children didn't belong in "important business events."

Tonight had been the first exception.

A mistake he would soon regret.

Across the ballroom, Julian laughed with investors while Evelyn quietly helped Lily pick tiny desserts from the buffet.

"Mom," Lily whispered.

"Can I look at the ice sculpture?"

"Not too far."

"I'll stay where you can see me."

The child skipped happily toward the enormous sculpture shaped like a swan.

Several guests smiled warmly.

Others barely noticed her.

Near the sculpture stood Julian's tuxedo jacket, casually draped over a chair after he complained about the heat.

Pinned inside the lapel...

A priceless diamond brooch.

An antique family heirloom.

Insured for nearly five million dollars.

Only a handful of people even knew it was there.

Or so everyone believed.

...

Twenty minutes later...

A scream sliced through the music.

"My brooch!"

Conversation stopped instantly.

Heads turned.

Julian was frantically searching his jacket.

"It's gone!"

Silence spread across the ballroom like wildfire.

Guests exchanged uneasy glances.

Five million dollars didn't simply disappear.

Julian's face darkened.

"Nobody leaves."

Security guards immediately closed every exit.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Phones slowly lowered.

Everyone watched.

Julian demanded every nearby guest be searched.

One by one.

Handbags.

Pockets.

Coats.

Nothing.

Then a security guard hesitated.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"We reviewed the hallway camera."

"And?"

"The only person seen approaching your jacket..."

He pointed toward the dessert table.

"...was your daughter."

Every eye turned.

Tiny Lily froze.

She looked completely confused.

Julian walked toward her.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

"Lily."

The little girl clutched her mother's hand.

"Yes... Daddy?"

"Were you near my jacket?"

"I..."

She swallowed.

"I was looking at the flowers."

"Did you touch it?"

"I don't remember."

Julian's voice hardened.

"Answer me."

"I... I might have."

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

Evelyn immediately stepped between them.

"She's six."

"She's frightened."

"You're interrogating a child."

Julian ignored her.

"Where is the brooch?"

"I don't know."

"Lily."

"I don't know!"

The child burst into tears.

Julian grabbed her tiny wrist.

Hard.

Pain flashed across Lily's face.

"Daddy... you're hurting me..."

Evelyn instantly pulled Lily behind her.

"Let go of her."

Julian stared coldly.

"If she didn't steal it..."

"...she has nothing to fear."

Evelyn's voice trembled with fury.

"She's our daughter."

"My daughter doesn't lie."

Before anyone could react...

SLAP!

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Julian's hand had struck Evelyn across the face.

Her head snapped sideways.

The room fell silent.

Several guests instinctively stepped back.

Even the orchestra members stared in disbelief.

Julian had just hit his wife...

In front of hundreds of witnesses.

Lily screamed.

"Mom!"

She wrapped both arms around Evelyn's waist, sobbing uncontrollably.

Julian pointed toward the child.

"This is exactly what happens when you raise a thief!"

Evelyn slowly lifted her head.

A red handprint spread across her cheek.

Her eyes no longer showed hurt.

Only something far colder.

"She's only six years old."

"How dare you hit me in front of my daughter?"

Lily cried harder.

"Mom..."

"I didn't take it."

"I swear."

Evelyn knelt beside her.

"I know, sweetheart."

"I believe you."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"Stop covering for her."

"The diamond disappeared."

"She was the only one near it."

From across the ballroom, Julian's mother, Eleanor Whitmore, finally stepped forward.

Elegant.

Graceful.

Feared by everyone who knew her.

"Evelyn."

"Enough."

"You're embarrassing this family."

Evelyn stared at her mother-in-law.

"You expect me to stand here while your son assaults me..."

"...and accuses a six-year-old of theft?"

Eleanor's expression never changed.

"Control yourself."

"The guests are watching."

"They should watch."

"They should know exactly what kind of family the Whitmores really are."

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

Several investors quietly exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Julian noticed.

His reputation.

His company.

Everything depended on appearances.

His patience snapped.

"I've had enough."

"You."

He pointed toward Evelyn.

"And the girl."

"Get out."

"Now."

Nobody moved.

Julian stepped closer.

His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

"If I ever find that brooch..."

"...I'll make sure both of you pay for this."

Evelyn slowly stood.

She held Lily behind her.

Then she looked Julian directly in the eyes.

A strange calm settled over her face.

"Lay one more hand on my daughter..."

"...or on me..."

"...and you'll regret it."

Laughter erupted from several guests.

Julian smirked.

"Or what?"

"What can a powerless woman like you possibly do?"

For years...

Everyone believed Evelyn had come from an ordinary family.

No wealth.

No influence.

No powerful relatives.

Just a quiet woman lucky enough to marry into the Whitmore dynasty.

Even Julian believed it.

Especially Julian.

Evelyn whispered one final warning.

"I told you..."

"Never touch my daughter again."

Julian reached toward Lily.

"I'll search her myself."

His fingers barely brushed the little girl's shoulder.

Before anyone understood what happened...

THUD!

Evelyn's heel drove violently into Julian's chest.

The impact knocked him backward several feet.

He crashed into a champagne tower.

Crystal exploded across the marble floor.

Guests screamed.

Julian clutched his chest.

His face turned pale.

"I..."

He struggled for air.

"My chest..."

"Security!"

"Get her away from me!"

Panic erupted.

Several guards rushed forward.

Eleanor stared in horror.

"What have you done?"

"You actually kicked him?"

Evelyn didn't move.

She simply held Lily close.

Then...

For the first time all night...

She smiled.

Not with satisfaction.

With certainty.

As though everything that had just happened...

Was exactly what she had expected.

Across the ballroom...

Hidden behind a marble column...

A man wearing a catering uniform quietly slipped a glittering diamond brooch into another guest's handbag.

He smiled beneath the brim of his cap.

"No one will ever suspect the truth."

Then he disappeared into the crowd.

Outside...

Across the street...

A black limousine rolled silently to the curb.

An elderly man stepped out.

Silver-haired.

Impeccably dressed.

One glance through the ballroom windows was enough to drain the color from his face.

He recognized the woman standing inside.

Impossible.

She was supposed to have disappeared forever.

His hand trembled as he whispered to his bodyguard,

"Prepare the car."

May you like

"We're bringing my daughter home."
