Chapter 13 The Sister Who Never Came Home

The chamber fell into stunned silence.

Every pair of eyes locked onto the tablet in Marcus's hands.

The camera feed showed the woman climbing the grand staircase of Haven House with measured, almost elegant steps.

She was in her early forties.

Her auburn hair framed a face that looked hauntingly familiar.

Not identical to Evelyn's...

But unmistakably related.

Arthur whispered again, barely able to breathe,

"Amelia..."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

"My sister died."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"No..."

"I buried an empty coffin."

Above them, the woman entered the library.

She paused before the torn portrait hanging over the fireplace.

For several seconds, she simply looked at it.

Then she reached out and gently touched the painted face of Emma Sterling.

A faint sadness crossed her expression.

One of the soldiers behind her asked,

"General?"

She answered without looking away.

"Leave us."

The soldiers immediately withdrew.

Ross frowned.

"General?"

Gabriel nodded.

"General Amelia Sterling."

"The highest-ranking commander the Order has ever produced."

Evelyn stared at him.

"The Order?"

"You've called them an organization."

"You've called them Project Heir."

"What are they really?"

Gabriel answered quietly.

"The Order of the Crescent."

"The Archive was never their greatest treasure."

"You were."

Arthur's fists clenched.

"I should have taken both of you."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You couldn't."

"They only allowed one child to disappear."

The meaning hit Evelyn like a freight train.

"They made you choose."

Arthur didn't answer.

His silence said everything.

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

"You chose me."

Arthur's voice broke.

"I thought Amelia was already gone."

Lily tugged gently on Arthur's sleeve.

"Grandpa..."

Arthur looked down.

"Did Aunt Amelia think you abandoned her?"

The old man couldn't speak.

He simply nodded.

Lily wrapped her tiny arms around him.

"It wasn't your fault."

Arthur finally wept openly.

Meanwhile...

Amelia reached the entrance to the Archive.

The steel vault stood open.

She looked inside.

Empty.

The shelves remained.

The files remained.

But the people were gone.

She smiled faintly.

"So..."

"You finally opened it."

She pressed two fingers to her earpiece.

"They're below."

"No one enters without my command."

A soldier's voice replied,

"Yes, General."

Back in the hidden chamber...

Ross examined Emma's letter again.

Something bothered him.

The handwriting suddenly changed halfway through the final page.

He compared the ink.

Different shade.

Different pressure.

Different pen.

He looked at Gabriel.

"This letter was altered."

Gabriel nodded.

"I noticed."

Arthur looked up sharply.

"What?"

Ross held up the page.

"The first part was written decades ago."

"The last paragraph..."

"...was added much later."

Evelyn frowned.

"Who added it?"

Ross quietly answered,

"Someone wanted me here."

Marcus leaned over the table.

"Detective."

"If the last page is fake..."

Ross finished the thought.

"Then I'm probably not Lily's biological father."

Lily looked relieved.

"So Daddy is still Daddy?"

Evelyn hugged her tightly.

"Yes."

"No piece of paper changes that."

Suddenly...

A soft laugh echoed through the chamber.

Not from the staircase.

From behind them.

Everyone spun around.

A hidden stone wall had silently opened.

Amelia stood there alone.

No weapon raised.

No soldiers beside her.

Only quiet eyes filled with years of sorrow.

"Evelyn."

The sisters stared at one another.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Twenty-five years of unanswered questions hung between them.

Finally...

Amelia smiled.

"You've grown taller."

Evelyn burst into tears.

"You..."

"...you're alive."

Amelia nodded once.

"I never stopped being alive."

"I just stopped being free."

Arthur slowly stepped forward.

"Amelia..."

She looked at him.

The warmth vanished from her face.

"You don't get to call me that."

Arthur stopped.

"I searched for you."

"For twenty years."

Amelia laughed.

"A year has three hundred sixty-five days."

"Twenty years is seven thousand three hundred opportunities."

"You found none."

Every word landed like a blade.

Arthur lowered his head.

"I failed you."

"You chose."

"I survived because you chose."

Silence.

No one tried to interrupt.

Gabriel watched quietly.

"So..."

"You finally know."

Amelia turned toward him.

"I've always known."

She walked slowly around the chamber.

"The Order told me my father abandoned me."

"I believed them."

She stopped in front of Arthur.

"Until three months ago."

Arthur looked up.

"What changed?"

Amelia reached into her coat.

She removed an old cassette tape.

Emma's voice echoed softly from its label.

Arthur's eyes widened.

"Emma..."

Amelia nodded.

"My mother recorded everything before she died."

"The Order hid the tapes."

"I found them."

"And I learned the truth."

Ross frowned.

"If you know the truth..."

"Why are you still leading them?"

Amelia looked directly at him.

"Because someone had to."

Everyone stared.

She continued.

"For twenty years..."

"I climbed through their ranks."

"I became exactly what they wanted."

"So one day..."

"...I could destroy them from the inside."

Gabriel smiled.

"I told Arthur you'd surprise him."

Arthur whispered,

"You've been undercover..."

"...for twenty years?"

Amelia nodded.

"Longer than anyone."

Just then...

Every light in the chamber suddenly turned green.

A calm electronic voice echoed through the hidden room.

Security Override Accepted.

Gabriel frowned.

"Who did that?"

Marcus looked at his tablet.

"I'm not touching anything."

The voice continued.

Director Identity Confirmed.

Everyone looked at Gabriel.

He shook his head.

"I didn't authorize this."

The system replied.

Not you.

A hidden projector activated.

Across the stone wall appeared a live security feed.

Not from Haven House.

Not from the bunker.

From Whitmore Holdings Headquarters.

Julian Whitmore stood inside his office.

Surrounded by FBI agents.

Ross stared.

"What..."

One agent placed Julian in handcuffs.

Julian shouted,

"There must be some mistake!"

The lead agent calmly replied,

"We've recovered financial records from an anonymous source."

"Along with evidence connecting Whitmore Holdings to the Order of the Crescent."

Julian's face turned white.

"I've never heard of..."

Before he could finish...

Another agent placed a photograph on the desk.

Julian froze.

It showed him.

At eighteen years old.

Standing beside Arthur.

Beside Gabriel.

And beside a young Amelia.

The room beneath Haven House fell silent.

Evelyn stared at the image in horror.

Arthur whispered,

"No..."

"That photograph..."

"I destroyed it."

Gabriel slowly looked toward the still-open cedar box.

His expression changed for the first time.

Fear.

Because someone else...

Someone none of them had accounted for...

Had just made their move.

And whoever that unseen player was...

May you like

They knew everything.
