Chapter 6 The Night the Past Came Hunting

Darkness swallowed Haven House.

The only light came from the moon, filtering through tall windows and casting long silver bars across the polished floor.

For three seconds...

No one moved.

Then Arthur's voice cut through the silence.

"Emergency protocol."

The mansion instantly came alive.

Not with electricity.

With people.

Hidden doors slid open along the walls.

Four armed security officers emerged from concealed rooms, each carrying compact rifles and wearing discreet body armor beneath plain clothes.

Lily stared in disbelief.

"Were they... living in the walls?"

One of the guards couldn't help smiling.

"We've been here the whole time, princess."

Arthur's expression remained grim.

"Positions."

The warmth vanished from the room.

These were not bodyguards hired by a billionaire.

They moved like former special forces.

Disciplined.

Silent.

Efficient.

Outside...

Rain began to fall.

A black-clad figure stood at the edge of the forest, watching the mansion through night-vision binoculars.

Behind him, nearly twenty operatives waited in complete silence.

No chatter.

No nervousness.

Only patience.

The man lowered the binoculars.

"Status."

A woman beside him checked a tablet.

"Perimeter sealed."

"Thermal drones airborne."

"No police activity within five miles."

He nodded.

"What about Arthur's internal team?"

"We've identified six armed defenders."

The man smiled faintly.

"He still trusts the old system."

He pressed a button on his radio.

"Phase Two."

Inside Haven House...

Mrs. Harper hurried Lily into a hidden panic room.

It looked more like a child's bedroom than a bunker.

Books lined the shelves.

Stuffed animals sat neatly on a bed.

Colorful drawings decorated the walls.

Someone had prepared this room years ago.

As if they had always expected a child would one day need it.

Lily looked around.

"Did someone make this for me?"

Mrs. Harper's smile trembled.

"Long before you were born."

In the study, Evelyn confronted Arthur.

"No more half-truths."

"Who are these people?"

Arthur remained silent.

She stepped closer.

"My daughter is being hunted."

"I deserve the truth."

Arthur looked toward the rain-streaked window.

Finally...

He nodded.

"You remember the Sterling Foundation."

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"The charity organization?"

"That's what the newspapers called it."

Arthur shook his head.

"It was never just a charity."

He opened an old safe hidden behind a painting.

Inside were dozens of classified files.

Ancient passports.

Encrypted hard drives.

Bundles of foreign currency.

And one faded photograph.

Arthur placed it on the desk.

Evelyn stared.

Her breathing stopped.

The photograph showed twelve people standing together.

Arthur.

A younger Eleanor Whitmore.

Several unfamiliar faces.

And...

Julian.

Only eighteen years old.

Standing beside Arthur as if he were family.

Evelyn whispered,

"No..."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Julian has known who I am since the day he met you."

The room fell silent.

Every memory Evelyn had built over the last decade cracked apart.

"He married me..."

"...knowing exactly who I was?"

Arthur nodded.

"Yes."

"He wasn't protecting me."

"No."

"He was watching you."

Outside...

A small drone hovered above the roof.

Almost invisible against the storm clouds.

Its tiny camera rotated slowly.

Inside the command van hidden deep in the forest, a technician smiled.

"I've found the ventilation system."

The team leader leaned over the monitor.

"Excellent."

"Release them."

The technician pressed a button.

Tiny capsules detached from the drone.

They disappeared silently into the mansion's rooftop vents.

Detective Daniel Ross slammed a thick evidence file onto his desk.

He finally remembered where he'd seen the strange ring.

Twenty-three years earlier.

An unsolved federal investigation.

Operation Black Crescent.

The case had ended abruptly after every witness either disappeared...

...or died.

Ross opened the old file.

Inside lay a grainy surveillance photo.

A man shaking hands with a senator.

On his finger...

The exact same crescent moon and raven ring.

Ross's heartbeat quickened.

He turned another page.

The organization's suspected financier...

Arthur Sterling.

Ross froze.

"No..."

He flipped through the remaining pages.

Most had been marked:

CLASSIFIED

SEALED BY FEDERAL ORDER

One page, however, remained visible.

Across the top, someone had handwritten four chilling words.

Never Trust the Family.

Back at Haven House...

One of Arthur's guards suddenly sniffed the air.

"Sir..."

Arthur looked up.

"What?"

"I smell almonds."

Arthur's face turned white.

"Everyone down!"

A fraction of a second later...

A colorless gas hissed from the ventilation grilles.

The guards immediately pulled respirators from their belts.

Arthur threw one toward Evelyn.

"Put it on!"

"What is it?"

"A nerve agent!"

Before she could secure the mask...

One guard collapsed.

Then another.

Their rifles clattered across the floor.

The gas spread with terrifying speed.

Mrs. Harper burst into the study carrying Lily.

"They're inside the ventilation!"

Arthur grabbed Lily into his arms.

"We're leaving."

"The tunnel?"

"No."

"They'll expect that."

He ran toward an ancient grandfather clock.

Twisting its pendulum caused an entire bookshelf to rotate silently.

A hidden staircase descended beneath the mansion.

Evelyn stared.

"How many secret passages does this place have?"

Arthur answered without looking back.

"More than the people hunting us know."

As they disappeared underground...

The mansion's massive front doors exploded inward.

Armed operatives flooded inside.

The team leader removed his gas mask.

He surveyed the empty hall.

"They escaped."

A young operative looked disappointed.

"We were too late."

The leader smiled calmly.

"No."

"They're exactly where I want them."

He walked to the rotating bookshelf.

Touched the hidden mechanism.

Then quietly laughed.

"Arthur..."

"You always choose the same path."

He pressed a transmitter in his pocket.

Deep beneath Haven House...

A small red light suddenly began blinking on the tunnel wall.

Arthur stopped walking.

His expression turned to horror.

"No..."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What is it?"

Arthur whispered,

"This tunnel..."

"...has been mined."

Before anyone could react...

A deafening explosion erupted ahead.

The underground passage collapsed.

Concrete crashed from the ceiling.

Dust consumed the air.

Arthur shoved Lily backward just as tons of rock buried the escape route.

When the dust settled...

A massive wall of rubble separated them.

Arthur.

On one side.

Evelyn and Lily...

On the other.

Then, through the settling dust, a voice echoed from the darkness behind Evelyn.

Soft.

Calm.

Almost friendly.

"Mrs. Whitmore..."

She turned slowly.

A man in a black suit stood only a few yards away, untouched by the collapse.

He smiled politely.

May you like

"I've been looking forward to meeting you."
