Chapter 7 The Man Who Knew Evelyn's Name

Dust drifted through the collapsed tunnel like gray snow.

For several seconds, Evelyn couldn't hear anything except the ringing in her ears.

"Lily!"

"I'm here, Mom!"

The little girl crawled toward her through the haze, coughing but unharmed.

Evelyn pulled her into a fierce embrace.

Behind the wall of rubble, Arthur's muffled voice echoed desperately.

"Evelyn!"

"Lily!"

"Answer me!"

"We're alive!" Evelyn shouted.

She rushed toward the pile of broken concrete, trying to move a chunk nearly the size of a refrigerator.

It didn't budge.

"Arthur!"

"We're trapped!"

The old man's reply came faintly.

"Stay where you are!"

"I'm coming!"

Before Evelyn could answer...

A slow clap echoed through the tunnel.

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

She turned sharply.

The man in the black suit stood perfectly still, his polished shoes somehow untouched by the dust.

He looked to be in his early forties.

Dark hair.

Calm eyes.

A tailored charcoal suit.

No visible weapon.

Yet somehow...

He was more unsettling than the masked gunmen upstairs.

He smiled politely.

"My apologies."

"I didn't intend for the explosion to separate your family."

Evelyn instinctively stepped in front of Lily.

"Who are you?"

The man inclined his head slightly.

"My name is Adrian Cross."

"I represent people who have been searching for you for a very long time."

"I don't know you."

"No."

"But I know you."

His gaze drifted to Lily.

"And I know your daughter."

Lily gripped Evelyn's hand tighter.

"I don't like him."

Adrian smiled.

"Children usually have excellent instincts."

Behind the collapsed tunnel...

Arthur's security team worked frantically to clear the debris.

One guard wiped blood from his forehead.

"It's too unstable."

"If we keep digging, the ceiling could collapse."

Arthur ignored him.

He shoved another slab aside with surprising strength.

"We don't stop."

"Sir..."

"I said we don't stop!"

For the first time in years...

The legendary Arthur Sterling looked frightened.

Not for himself.

For his granddaughter.

Meanwhile...

Detective Daniel Ross sped toward Haven House.

His police SUV bounced along the rain-soaked forest road.

Beside him sat Marcus Hale.

"You really think Arthur Sterling is innocent?"

Marcus asked.

Ross kept his eyes on the road.

"I think everyone has been asking the wrong question."

"What do you mean?"

"They're treating this like a theft."

"It never was."

Marcus frowned.

"Then what is it?"

Ross's grip tightened on the steering wheel.

"A retrieval."

Back in the tunnel...

Adrian slowly removed his gloves.

His hands were empty.

"I'm not here to hurt Lily."

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"That's hard to believe."

"It doesn't matter what you believe."

"It matters what you know."

He reached into his jacket.

Evelyn stiffened.

Instead of a gun...

He produced a small velvet pouch.

Carefully opening it...

He poured its contents into his palm.

A diamond brooch.

Julian's missing heirloom.

Evelyn stared.

"Impossible."

"It was found at the gala."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

"A copy was found."

He held the brooch toward her.

"This..."

"...is the original."

Her heart skipped.

"Why are you showing me this?"

"Because this brooch was never stolen."

"It was returned."

Outside...

The storm intensified.

Lightning illuminated Haven House.

The masked assault team searched every room.

One operative entered the library.

Another swept the dining hall.

A third paused before a massive portrait hanging above the fireplace.

It showed Arthur decades earlier...

Standing beside a woman with emerald-green eyes.

The operative frowned.

"Sir."

The team leader approached.

"What?"

"This painting."

The leader studied it.

Then quietly whispered,

"So that's what she looked like."

Without warning...

He slashed the canvas open with a knife.

Behind it...

A steel compartment.

Empty.

His smile disappeared.

"We're too late."

In the tunnel...

Evelyn refused to take her eyes off Adrian.

"What do you want?"

He answered immediately.

"You."

"I'm not going anywhere with you."

"You misunderstand."

"I'm not asking."

Lily suddenly spoke.

"Mom."

"He smells like the cake man."

Both adults froze.

Adrian's expression changed almost imperceptibly.

Lily pointed at him.

"The man at the party..."

"He smells the same."

Evelyn looked sharply at Adrian.

"You were there."

"I was."

"You spoke to my daughter."

"I did."

"You used her."

Adrian sighed.

"No."

"I protected her."

Evelyn's anger exploded.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"If I hadn't distracted Lily..."

"...the bomb hidden inside Julian's jacket would've exploded."

Silence.

The words echoed through the tunnel.

Bomb?

Evelyn stared.

"What did you just say?"

Adrian looked directly into her eyes.

"There was never a plan to steal the brooch."

"The brooch concealed an explosive device."

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

"No..."

"The explosion was supposed to kill Julian."

"And everyone standing near him."

Her mind raced.

The crowded ballroom.

Hundreds of guests.

Lily beside the jacket.

If Adrian hadn't asked Lily to hold the tray...

She would have remained exactly where Julian had left his coat.

She whispered,

"My daughter..."

"...would have died."

Adrian nodded.

"Along with dozens of others."

Behind the rubble...

Arthur suddenly stopped digging.

His radio crackled.

One surviving guard spoke urgently.

"Sir."

"We've intercepted a transmission."

Arthur grabbed the radio.

"What did you hear?"

The guard swallowed.

"They've recovered the painting."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"And?"

"The compartment is empty."

Arthur exhaled slowly.

"Good."

The guard hesitated.

"But..."

"They know someone already took it."

Arthur looked toward the collapsed tunnel.

His face turned pale.

"Adrian..."

Inside the tunnel...

Adrian slipped the brooch back into the velvet pouch.

"I've answered one question."

"Now you answer mine."

Evelyn remained silent.

He spoke softly.

"Where is the key?"

She frowned.

"What key?"

"The one your mother hid before she died."

"My mother died in a car accident."

Adrian's expression was almost sympathetic.

"No."

"She was murdered."

Everything inside Evelyn stopped.

"What?"

Arthur had told her countless times that her parents died in an accident during a mountain trip.

It was the story she had believed since childhood.

Adrian shook his head.

"That was the first lie."

"The accident never happened."

"They executed her."

Lily looked up at her mother.

"Mom..."

Evelyn could barely breathe.

"You..."

"You're lying."

"I wish I were."

He reached slowly into his inside pocket again.

This time...

He removed a faded newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

LOCAL COUPLE KILLED IN MOUNTAIN CRASH

Across the front page...

A large red stamp had been pressed diagonally.

FABRICATED

Evelyn's hands trembled as she reached for it.

Just before she could touch the paper...

A single gunshot echoed through the tunnel.

BANG!

Adrian staggered backward.

A dark stain spread across his shoulder.

From the shadows behind him...

Arthur Sterling emerged through a cloud of dust, pistol raised with unwavering hands.

His voice thundered through the tunnel.

"Get away from my family."

Adrian looked down at the blood soaking his suit.

Then...

To Evelyn's horror...

He smiled.

"You finally found us."

Before Arthur could fire again...

Dozens of red laser sights suddenly appeared on the tunnel walls.

One.

Five.

Ten.

Twenty.

Every laser converged...

May you like

On Lily.
