Chapter 5 The Safe House That Wasn't Safe

The tunnel smelled of damp concrete and rust.
Lily crawled on trembling hands and knees, her tiny breaths echoing in the darkness. Behind her came Evelyn, and behind Evelyn came Arthur Sterling, who carefully pulled the steel hatch shut before locking it from the inside.
The muffled sounds of boots and shouting faded overhead.
For the moment...
They had escaped.
Or so it seemed.
Arthur switched on a narrow-beam flashlight.
"Keep moving."
"How long is this tunnel?" Evelyn whispered.
"About four hundred feet."
"You built this?"
"No."
"I bought the building after you moved here."
Evelyn stopped crawling.
"You bought the entire building?"
Arthur met her eyes.
"I couldn't risk leaving your safety to strangers."
For several seconds, she simply stared at him.
"So all these years..."
"You knew where we were."
"Yes."
"You watched us."
"Yes."
"You let me believe I was completely alone."
Arthur lowered his head.
"I believed distance was the only thing keeping you alive."
Evelyn's anger flared.
"I buried my past because of you!"
"And I buried my daughter because of my mistakes."
His voice cracked on the last word.
Silence swallowed the tunnel.
Lily looked back and forth between them, confused.
"I don't understand."
Evelyn forced a smile despite the pain in her eyes.
"You don't have to."
"Not yet."
Ten minutes later, the tunnel opened into an abandoned maintenance garage several blocks away.
An ordinary gray SUV waited inside.
Arthur unlocked it remotely.
"No license plates?" Evelyn asked.
"They're magnetic."
He pressed another button.
A fresh set of plates slid into place.
Lily's eyes widened.
"That's so cool."
Arthur chuckled softly.
"I wish we were using it for something happier."
They climbed inside.
The engine purred to life.
Before Arthur shifted into gear, he looked in the rearview mirror.
"We're being watched."
Evelyn turned instinctively.
"I don't see anyone."
"You weren't supposed to."
He drove out of the garage without another word.
Across the city...
Inside Whitmore Manor...
Julian paced furiously across his office.
The news had already reached him.
"Apartment explosion."
"Possible terrorist attack."
He slammed his fist onto the desk.
"Where are they?"
His private investigator stood nearby.
"We lost them after the explosion."
Julian glared.
"You expect me to believe my wife simply vanished?"
"We're still searching."
Julian stopped pacing.
"Find Evelyn."
"Before the police do."
The investigator hesitated.
"Sir..."
"Detective Ross has already requested the gala security footage."
Julian's expression darkened.
"What about the missing three seconds?"
"We couldn't recover them."
Julian slowly turned.
"What do you mean 'couldn't'?"
"They weren't deleted."
"They were overwritten."
"By whom?"
"We don't know."
For the first time since the gala...
Julian felt something unfamiliar.
Not anger.
Fear.
At Police Headquarters...
Detective Daniel Ross stared at the ballroom surveillance on a massive monitor.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Something was wrong.
He paused on the frame Marcus had noticed.
The reflection in the silver vase.
Ross enlarged it.
Still blurry.
He enhanced the contrast.
A shape slowly emerged.
Not a face.
Not even a full body.
Only...
A distinctive signet ring.
Ross leaned closer.
The ring bore an unusual symbol.
A crescent moon wrapped around a raven.
His eyes narrowed.
"I've seen this before."
He rushed toward the evidence archive.
Meanwhile...
Arthur drove without headlights along a deserted country road.
Lily had finally fallen asleep against Evelyn's shoulder.
The little girl's face was still stained with dried tears.
Evelyn brushed a strand of hair from her daughter's forehead.
"She shouldn't have to live like this."
Arthur kept his eyes on the road.
"I know."
"You said people are trying to kill her."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Arthur remained silent.
Evelyn's voice sharpened.
"Enough secrets."
He sighed deeply.
"They're not after Lily because of who she is."
"They're after her..."
"...because of what she saw."
"The waiter?"
Arthur nodded.
"The man with the moon tattoo wasn't stealing the brooch."
Evelyn frowned.
"Then why was he there?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"To deliver it."
She blinked.
"What?"
"The brooch wasn't the target."
"It was the message."
The SUV rolled through iron gates hidden behind towering pine trees.
Ahead stood a sprawling stone estate surrounded by dense forest.
Lily woke just as the car stopped.
"Where are we?"
Arthur looked at the old mansion.
"Haven House."
Evelyn's face lost all color.
"No..."
"You brought us here?"
"It's the safest place left."
"I swore I'd never come back."
Arthur turned to her.
"You don't have a choice anymore."
The mansion looked abandoned.
Vines crawled over cracked stone walls.
The windows were dark.
Years of neglect had transformed it into something haunting.
Yet as Arthur approached the front door...
Tiny red lights flickered beneath the eaves.
Motion sensors.
Hidden cameras.
Steel shutters.
The house wasn't abandoned.
It was fortified.
The heavy oak door opened before Arthur even knocked.
A woman in her sixties greeted them.
Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head.
She smiled warmly at Lily.
"Welcome home."
Lily smiled shyly.
"Do I know you?"
The woman's eyes shimmered with emotion.
"I knew your mother when she was your age."
Evelyn whispered,
"Mrs. Harper..."
The older woman embraced her tightly.
"I prayed I'd never see you here again."
"So did I."
Inside, Haven House was nothing like its weathered exterior.
The halls were spotless.
Security monitors covered one wall.
Backup generators hummed beneath the floor.
It was less a mansion than a hidden command center.
Arthur led them into a study.
On the walls hung dozens of old photographs.
One caught Lily's attention.
"Mom!"
She pointed excitedly.
"That's you!"
A young Evelyn smiled from the photograph.
Standing beside Arthur...
And beside another little girl.
She looked almost identical to Evelyn.
Lily tilted her head.
"Who's that?"
Evelyn froze.
Arthur slowly answered.
"Your aunt."
Lily blinked.
"I have an aunt too?"
Arthur's expression grew heavy.
"You did."
"Her name was Amelia."
"What happened to her?"
No one answered.
Mrs. Harper quietly lowered her eyes.
Just then...
One of the security monitors emitted a sharp alarm.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
Arthur spun around.
"What is it?"
A young technician looked up from the console.
"Sir..."
"We've detected movement."
"Where?"
The technician enlarged the thermal feed.
Several bright figures moved silently through the surrounding forest.
One.
Three.
Five.
Then...
Eight.
All approaching Haven House from different directions.
Arthur's face hardened.
"They found us."
Evelyn whispered,
"How?"
"No one knew we were coming."
The technician zoomed in again.
One of the intruders deliberately stepped into the moonlight.
He looked directly at a hidden camera.
Then...
He smiled.
Slowly raising his gloved hand...
He held up a small GPS tracker.
The technician gasped.
"Impossible..."
Arthur's eyes widened.
He looked toward Lily.
Then toward the SUV outside.
A sinking realization struck him.
"The car..."
"They planted a tracker on the vehicle."
Before anyone could react...
The estate's power flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every monitor went black.
The backup generators had failed simultaneously.
Darkness swallowed Haven House.
Outside...
The sound of dozens of footsteps echoed through the forest.
And from somewhere beyond the trees...
A calm male voice rang out through a loudspeaker.
"Arthur Sterling."
"You've been running for twenty years."
"Tonight..."
May you like
"...the hunt ends."
