Chapter 4 The Men in Black

The explosion rolled through the apartment building like thunder trapped inside concrete.
Every window on the third floor shattered at once.
Glass rained across the living room.
The lights died.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Lily screamed.
"Evelyn!"
Without thinking, Evelyn threw herself over her daughter, shielding the little girl from the flying shards.
The elderly visitor reacted with startling speed.
Far faster than any man in his seventies should have been able to move.
He pulled a compact flashlight from inside his jacket with one hand while the other reached beneath his coat.
When it emerged...
He was holding a matte-black pistol.
Evelyn stared.
"You still carry one?"
"I hoped I'd never have to use it again."
A second explosion echoed from below.
Not as powerful.
Deliberate.
The emergency generator had just been destroyed.
The entire building fell into complete darkness.
Only distant screams echoed through the hallways.
Then...
Silence.
Too much silence.
The old man's expression hardened.
"They're here."
Three floors below...
Six figures dressed entirely in black entered through the emergency stairwell.
No shouting.
No panic.
Every movement was rehearsed.
Each wore an earpiece.
Night-vision goggles rested over their eyes.
The leader raised two fingers.
The team split instantly.
One moved toward the electrical room.
Another blocked the front entrance.
Two climbed the stairs.
The last pair unpacked a small electronic device.
A blue screen flickered to life.
One of them smiled.
"Phone signals are jammed."
"No one is calling the police."
The leader checked a photograph on his tablet.
A little girl.
Brown eyes.
Dark hair.
Six years old.
Beneath the image...
One word.
WITNESS.
Back inside the apartment...
Evelyn finally found her voice.
"Who are these people?"
The old man answered without taking his eyes off the door.
"Professionals."
"They don't leave survivors."
Lily looked between them.
"Grandpa..."
The old man blinked.
No one had called him that in years.
The innocent word struck somewhere deep inside him.
He forced a smile.
"Stay behind your mother."
Three loud knocks echoed through the apartment.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
Nobody spoke.
Then came a calm voice from outside.
"Building security."
"We're evacuating everyone."
The old man didn't move.
Instead, he quietly whispered,
"They're lying."
Evelyn frowned.
"How do you know?"
"Because..."
He slowly removed the magazine from his pistol.
"...real security never knocks three times."
The apartment door exploded inward.
The first masked man entered low.
The second entered high.
Perfect formation.
Professional.
But before either could react...
BANG!
The old man's pistol flashed once.
The first intruder collapsed instantly.
A second shot.
The hallway light sparked.
Darkness again.
"Move!"
He grabbed Evelyn's arm.
"There are more!"
Lily covered her ears, crying uncontrollably.
They rushed toward the kitchen.
Behind them, boots thundered through the hallway.
The attackers hadn't expected resistance.
Especially not from an elderly gentleman.
Their leader spoke into his radio.
"Target has protection."
"Repeat."
"Unexpected armed protection."
A calm voice answered.
"Retrieve the child."
"Ignore everyone else."
Meanwhile...
Twenty miles away...
Detective Daniel Ross had just arrived home.
He loosened his tie.
Poured a cup of coffee.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Instead, he answered.
"Ross."
Only static.
Then...
A frightened little voice.
"Help..."
Ross froze.
"Lily?"
Another burst of static.
Then the line went dead.
Ross looked at the caller ID.
Blocked.
His instincts screamed.
Something was terribly wrong.
He grabbed his keys and ran.
Back inside the apartment building...
Smoke drifted through the corridors.
Fire alarms wailed.
Residents stumbled downstairs in confusion.
Perfect cover.
The attackers blended effortlessly among the frightened crowd.
One of them quietly spoke into his sleeve.
"Thermal scan."
A small handheld monitor displayed glowing silhouettes through the walls.
Three adults.
One child.
Apartment 307.
"They're still inside."
The old man pushed a bookshelf against the broken apartment door.
It wouldn't stop professionals.
But it might buy seconds.
Seconds mattered.
He turned toward Evelyn.
"You need to hear the truth."
"Not now!"
"Now."
His voice became unexpectedly firm.
"They came because Lily saw something."
"I know."
"No."
"You don't."
He took a folded photograph from the leather folder he'd carried into the apartment.
It was old.
Edges worn.
The picture showed three people standing beside a lake.
A young Evelyn.
A beautiful woman.
And the same silver-haired man...
Only much younger.
Lily stared.
"Mom..."
"That's you."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"I burned every copy..."
The old man nodded.
"I kept one."
Lily looked confused.
"Who are you?"
He swallowed slowly.
"My name is Arthur Sterling."
"I'm..."
He hesitated.
"...your grandfather."
The room fell silent.
Lily blinked.
"I have a grandpa?"
Tears formed in Arthur's eyes.
"Yes."
"You always did."
Evelyn looked away.
"You weren't supposed to find us."
"I know."
"I failed."
Before anyone could speak again...
CRASH!
The apartment window shattered inward.
A small metal cylinder rolled across the floor.
Arthur's eyes widened.
"Gas!"
He kicked it toward the bathroom just as thick white smoke erupted.
Masks.
The attackers already wore respirators.
Within seconds, the apartment disappeared inside a cloud of choking vapor.
Lily coughed violently.
"I can't see!"
Arthur pulled two emergency respirators from his bag.
He handed one to Evelyn.
The second to Lily.
"You carried those?"
Evelyn asked in disbelief.
"I came prepared."
"For this?"
"For something worse."
Outside the apartment...
The team leader smiled beneath his mask.
"They'll lose consciousness in under thirty seconds."
One of his men checked the thermal scanner.
Then frowned.
"They're moving."
"What?"
"They're heading..."
He stared at the screen.
"...toward the laundry shaft."
The leader's expression changed.
"There isn't supposed to be an exit there."
Inside...
Arthur shoved an old washing machine aside.
Behind it...
A narrow steel hatch appeared.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"I've lived here for seven years."
"I never knew..."
Arthur forced the hatch open.
"A safe route."
"I had it built."
"You what?"
"I've been watching over you longer than you realize."
Evelyn stared at him, unable to process what she'd just heard.
Had he really known where she was all these years?
Had someone been protecting them from the shadows?
There was no time to ask.
Arthur lifted Lily into the narrow passage.
"Go."
"You first."
The child crawled into darkness.
Evelyn followed.
Arthur entered last, pulling the hatch closed behind him.
Just three seconds later...
The apartment door burst open.
Masked gunmen flooded the room.
Empty.
The leader slowly removed his respirator.
His jaw tightened.
"They're gone."
One operative pointed toward the hidden hatch.
"Sir."
The leader knelt.
Touched the steel door.
Still warm.
He smiled.
"So..."
"You finally came out of hiding..."
Arthur Sterling.
On the roof of a nearby parking garage...
A woman watched the burning apartment through binoculars.
Long black coat.
Short auburn hair.
Expression unreadable.
She lowered the binoculars and spoke into a secure phone.
"Phase One failed."
A man's distorted voice answered.
"I expected it would."
"What now?"
The woman smiled faintly.
"Now..."
"We let Arthur lead us."
"Because no matter where he runs..."
"He'll eventually take the girl..."
"...to Haven House."
There was a pause on the line.
Then the man spoke five chilling words.
"Prepare the cemetery operation."
The woman ended the call.
Far below, sirens finally filled the night.
But by the time the police reached Apartment 307...
The people they were trying to save...
And the killers they were trying to catch...
May you like
Had already vanished into the darkness.
