Chapter 14 The Hand Behind Every Move

No one spoke.

The image of Julian in handcuffs remained frozen on the stone wall.

FBI agents escorted him through the lobby of Whitmore Holdings while reporters surged toward the entrance like a tidal wave.

Flashes from dozens of cameras lit the screen.

Evelyn stared without blinking.

Just forty-eight hours earlier, Julian had stood in a ballroom believing he controlled everything.

Now...

His empire was collapsing in front of the entire country.

Ross narrowed his eyes.

"Who sent the evidence?"

Marcus shook his head.

"The transmission didn't come from our system."

Gabriel stepped toward the projector.

"Someone hijacked the Archive's network."

Arthur frowned.

"That's impossible."

"I built every layer of its security."

Gabriel looked at him.

"No."

"You built the version you were allowed to see."

Thousands of miles away...

Inside a modern glass skyscraper overlooking London's financial district...

A woman sat alone before a wall of monitors.

More than sixty live video feeds surrounded her.

Haven House.

Whitmore Holdings.

Federal Police Headquarters.

Even the underground Archive.

She watched them all.

Without emotion.

Her silver-blonde hair was tied neatly behind her neck.

She lifted a porcelain teacup.

Took a slow sip.

Then quietly typed another command.

Across every monitor...

One word appeared.

CHECKMATE

Back beneath Haven House...

The projector flickered.

Julian's arrest disappeared.

A new video began.

Static.

Then...

Emma Sterling appeared.

Not the prerecorded message from before.

This recording looked different.

Older.

More exhausted.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...then the wrong person opened the Archive."

Arthur whispered,

"I never knew this recording existed."

Emma continued.

"Arthur..."

"If you're alive..."

"I'm sorry."

The old man's eyes filled again.

"You always believed the Order had one leader."

"It never did."

"It has a Board."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"No..."

Emma nodded slowly.

"Seven members."

"Seven votes."

"Seven families."

Ross looked at Gabriel.

"You were never in charge."

Gabriel answered bitterly,

"I was only the face they allowed the world to see."

Emma continued.

"By now..."

"...at least six of the seven will already be dead."

Arthur frowned.

"What?"

"Because I poisoned them."

Silence exploded through the chamber.

Marcus blinked.

"She... what?"

Emma's recording remained perfectly calm.

"Not immediately."

"Slowly."

"Over many years."

"One by one."

Gabriel stared at the screen.

His face drained of color.

"No..."

"I attended every funeral."

Emma smiled sadly.

"Exactly."

Amelia looked toward Arthur.

"So Mother won."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"If she had..."

"...we wouldn't be standing here."

Emma's image answered as though she had heard him.

"If you're still fighting..."

"...then one survived."

The room became ice cold.

Ross slowly counted.

"Seven members."

"Six poisoned."

"One survivor."

Gabriel whispered,

"The Chairman."

At that moment...

Every monitor in the chamber went black.

The emergency lights died.

For five long seconds...

Complete darkness.

Then...

A single spotlight illuminated the center of the room.

A distorted voice echoed from hidden speakers.

"Congratulations."

"You've finally solved half the puzzle."

Arthur froze.

Gabriel's fists clenched.

Amelia instinctively drew her pistol.

The voice chuckled.

"Don't bother looking for me."

"I'm not there."

In London...

The silver-haired woman smiled.

She leaned closer to her microphone.

"Arthur."

"It's been twenty-six years."

Arthur's eyes widened.

"...No."

"It can't be."

"You sound disappointed."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You know her?"

Arthur whispered one name.

"Vivian."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"The Chairman."

The woman laughed softly.

"So..."

"You finally remembered me."

Ross frowned.

"You're running the Order?"

Vivian smiled through the speakers.

"No."

"I own it."

She pressed another key.

The projector lit again.

This time...

Displaying seven old photographs.

Each showed one member of the Board.

Six faces had been crossed out in red.

Only one remained untouched.

Vivian Ashcroft.

Arthur stared.

"You were supposed to be dead."

Vivian tilted her head.

"So were many people in your story."

Lily quietly stepped closer to Evelyn.

"Mom..."

"She scares me."

Vivian heard her.

Her smile softened.

"Hello, Lily."

The little girl hid behind Evelyn.

"I've waited a very long time to meet you."

Evelyn shouted,

"Stay away from my daughter!"

Vivian merely sipped her tea.

"I have."

"For six years."

Everyone froze.

Ross looked sharply at the screen.

"What did you say?"

Vivian answered calmly.

"I've watched Lily since the day she was born."

Arthur whispered,

"No..."

She nodded.

"The pediatrician who delivered her."

"The teacher who taught her kindergarten."

"The neighbor across the street."

"The waitress at your favorite café."

She smiled.

"Mine."

The realization struck like a hammer.

Evelyn's entire life...

Had been surrounded.

Not by coincidence.

By surveillance.

Amelia's expression darkened.

"You used children."

Vivian shrugged.

"I used patience."

Ross stepped toward the projector.

"What do you want?"

Vivian looked directly into the camera.

"Peace."

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"Your version of peace."

"My version works."

She tapped one last key.

A satellite image filled the screen.

An isolated island.

Dense forest.

A private airstrip.

Coordinates blinked in the corner.

"This..."

Vivian said softly,

"...is where your final answers are waiting."

Arthur's face turned pale.

"No."

"The Eden Facility..."

Gabriel whispered,

"It still exists."

Vivian nodded.

"It never stopped existing."

The transmission began to fade.

Before it disappeared completely...

Vivian looked directly at Lily.

For the first time...

Her smile became genuinely warm.

"One day..."

"You'll understand why everything I've done..."

"...was for you."

The screen went black.

Silence.

No one moved.

Finally...

Ross broke it.

"We're going after her."

Gabriel shook his head.

"You don't understand."

Ross looked at him.

"Then explain."

Gabriel answered quietly.

"Eden isn't just an island."

"It's where Project Heir began."

"And where..."

He looked at Lily.

"...the last surviving children still are."

Arthur's breathing slowed.

"How many?"

Gabriel replied with one sentence that made every person in the chamber fall silent.

"According to the last report..."

May you like

"...there are eleven of them waiting."
