Chapter 8 The Child They Could Not Kill

Twenty crimson laser dots danced across the tunnel walls.

Then they settled.

Every one of them converged on a single target.

Six-year-old Lily.

Time seemed to stop.

Evelyn's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Arthur instinctively stepped in front of his granddaughter, spreading his arms as if his body alone could shield her from twenty rifles.

"Nobody moves," a voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Drop your weapons."

Arthur didn't.

Neither did Adrian.

For the first time since they had met, the two men stood on the same side of an invisible line.

Enemies...

But facing a greater danger.

The distorted voice spoke again.

"Arthur Sterling."

"You've disappointed us."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"I've disappointed many people."

"But not enough to surrender."

A chuckle echoed through the tunnel.

"Still stubborn."

"Just like twenty years ago."

Evelyn looked from Arthur to Adrian.

"What is happening?"

Neither answered.

Instead...

Both men looked toward the ceiling.

They recognized the voice.

Several hundred feet above them...

Deep beneath the ruins of Haven House...

A reinforced command bunker hummed with activity.

Rows of monitors displayed every corridor.

Every hidden passage.

Every thermal signature.

At the center of the room stood a tall man in a perfectly tailored navy suit.

His face remained hidden in shadow.

Only his hands were visible.

On his right hand...

A silver ring bearing a raven wrapped around a crescent moon.

He watched Lily on the screen.

"So..."

"This is the child."

One of his assistants nodded.

"Yes, Director."

The man smiled faintly.

"She looks exactly like her grandmother."

Back in the tunnel...

Arthur slowly lowered his pistol.

Not in surrender.

In calculation.

"There are too many firing angles," he whispered.

Adrian nodded almost imperceptibly.

"I count twenty-four."

"I count twenty-six."

They exchanged a brief glance.

Two masters silently measuring the battlefield.

Evelyn noticed.

"You two know each other."

Arthur answered without looking away from the darkness.

"I trained him."

The words hit Adrian harder than the bullet.

His smile faded.

"For three years."

Arthur continued.

"I taught him everything."

"How to survive."

"How to disappear."

"How to lie."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"You forgot one lesson."

"And what's that?"

"How to forgive."

Lily tugged at Evelyn's sleeve.

"Mom..."

"Why are they fighting?"

Before Evelyn could answer...

The hidden voice interrupted.

"Enough sentiment."

The tunnel lights suddenly flickered on.

For the first time...

Everyone saw the truth.

The walls weren't ordinary concrete.

They were reinforced steel.

Hidden gun ports lined both sides.

Tiny cameras tracked every movement.

This wasn't an escape tunnel.

It was a trap.

Arthur whispered under his breath.

"He rebuilt it."

A heavy steel door at the far end slowly opened.

Footsteps echoed.

Measured.

Confident.

A lone figure emerged.

Mid-sixties.

Silver hair.

Impeccable posture.

Expensive charcoal overcoat.

As he stepped into the light...

Evelyn's breath caught.

She had seen this face before.

Years ago.

In newspapers.

Standing beside presidents.

Prime ministers.

Billionaires.

The man smiled warmly.

"Evelyn."

"It's been far too long."

Arthur's face drained of color.

"No..."

"It can't be."

Adrian bowed his head slightly.

"Director."

The newcomer nodded.

"Adrian."

"You've done well."

Evelyn stared.

"Who is he?"

Arthur answered in a voice barely above a whisper.

"Gabriel Voss."

The name hung in the air like poison.

Even Adrian's calm demeanor grew cautious.

Gabriel clasped his hands behind his back.

"I never wanted any of this."

Arthur laughed bitterly.

"You murdered dozens of people."

"You hunted children."

"And you claim you never wanted this?"

Gabriel sighed.

"I wanted peace."

"You wanted control."

"Sometimes they're the same thing."

He turned toward Lily.

The little girl instinctively hid behind Evelyn.

Gabriel smiled kindly.

"Don't be afraid."

"I'm not here to hurt you."

Lily shook her head.

"You said that..."

"...but everyone with you has guns."

For the first time...

Gabriel looked genuinely surprised.

Then he laughed softly.

"She's clever."

"Just like..."

He stopped himself.

Detective Daniel Ross finally reached Haven House.

Smoke still drifted from the shattered windows.

The assault team had vanished.

Ross crouched beside a fresh set of tire tracks.

Marcus approached.

"What do you have?"

Ross pointed to the mud.

"They left in a hurry."

Marcus noticed something else.

"No."

"They arrived in a hurry."

Scattered across the ground were dozens of spent shell casings.

But...

No blood.

Ross frowned.

"There was a battle."

"But nobody died."

His radio suddenly crackled.

"Detective."

"We've located an underground structure beneath the estate."

Ross looked toward the mansion.

"Send everyone."

"No one goes down alone."

Back in the bunker...

Gabriel removed a small velvet box from his coat.

Inside rested...

The second diamond brooch.

Evelyn blinked.

"There are two?"

Gabriel nodded.

"There were always two."

He opened the hidden clasp beneath one brooch.

Inside...

Instead of gemstones...

A tiny brass key rested in a secret compartment.

Arthur whispered,

"So you found it..."

Gabriel smiled.

"No."

"I found one."

He looked directly at Evelyn.

"Your mother hid the other."

The second key.

"Together..."

He slowly closed the brooch.

"...they open something worth far more than money."

Evelyn's voice trembled.

"What?"

Gabriel answered without hesitation.

"The Archive."

Arthur shouted,

"Don't tell her!"

Gabriel ignored him.

"For fifty years..."

"The Archive has contained the names..."

"...of every politician..."

"...every judge..."

"...every billionaire..."

"...who ever accepted our organization's money."

Silence.

Even Adrian's expression shifted.

Gabriel continued.

"Whoever controls the Archive..."

"...controls governments."

"...markets."

"...entire nations."

Lily looked up innocently.

"Is that why everyone keeps chasing us?"

No one answered.

Because the truth...

Was worse.

Gabriel knelt until he was at eye level with her.

"No, Lily."

"They're chasing you..."

"...because only your blood can unlock it."

The tunnel fell deathly silent.

Evelyn's eyes widened.

"My blood?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"Not yours."

He looked gently at Lily.

"Hers."

Arthur lunged forward in fury.

"You leave her out of this!"

Twenty rifles instantly clicked into firing position.

Gabriel slowly stood.

"I'm afraid..."

"That choice was taken away..."

"...the day she was born."

Just then, a deafening explosion rocked the bunker.

The lights flickered violently.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

One of Gabriel's guards shouted into his radio.

"Director!"

"The police!"

"They've breached the outer tunnel!"

Gabriel smiled.

"Excellent."

He looked at Arthur.

"It seems..."

May you like

"...we're about to have more guests."
