Chapter 11 The Woman in White

For one endless moment...

No one moved.

Gunfire continued to echo through the outer corridors, but inside the Archive itself, an eerie silence settled over the room.

The woman in white stood at the far end of the vault.

She hadn't flinched when bullets ricocheted outside.

She hadn't reacted to the shouting.

She simply watched Lily.

Smiling.

Warmly.

Evelyn's breathing became ragged.

"...Mom?"

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Lily looked between them.

"Mom... you know her?"

Evelyn took one hesitant step forward.

The woman didn't move.

Her face...

Every detail was identical.

The emerald-green eyes.

The gentle smile.

The small scar beneath her left eyebrow.

The same scar Evelyn remembered kissing as a little girl after asking how her mother got hurt.

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

"You died."

The woman tilted her head.

"No."

A calm male voice interrupted.

"She did."

Everyone turned.

Ross frowned.

"What?"

Gabriel quietly walked toward the figure.

Then...

To everyone's astonishment...

He reached through her.

His hand passed straight through the woman's body.

The image flickered.

Lily gasped.

"It's a ghost!"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"No."

"It's a recording."

The woman shimmered briefly before becoming solid again.

Not physically.

Visually.

A life-sized hologram.

Hidden projectors embedded in the ceiling hummed softly.

Technology decades ahead of what anyone expected to find in an underground archive.

Ross stared upward.

"Incredible..."

Gabriel nodded.

"Arthur's daughter planned for this."

Arthur whispered,

"Emma..."

The hologram smiled.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I failed."

Evelyn froze.

Her mother's eyes seemed almost alive.

"I hoped none of you would ever find the Archive."

"But if you did..."

"...it means Gabriel kept his promise."

Gabriel lowered his head.

"I tried."

Arthur glared.

"You call this keeping a promise?"

"I promised to protect the Archive."

"I never promised not to pursue it."

The hologram continued.

"Evelyn..."

"If you're here..."

"Then you've grown into the woman I always hoped you'd become."

Tears streamed down Evelyn's face.

"I've missed you every day."

The recording smiled sadly.

"I know."

"But you must listen carefully."

She looked directly toward the camera that had recorded her decades earlier.

"The Archive is not a weapon."

"It is a confession."

Ross frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Gabriel remained silent.

The hologram answered for him.

"Everything stored here..."

"...is evidence."

"Evidence against everyone."

"The corrupt."

"The innocent."

"And..."

"...ourselves."

Arthur slowly lowered his head.

Ross stepped toward the shelves.

He opened another box.

Inside were videotapes.

Cassette recordings.

Handwritten journals.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Everything needed to expose an international conspiracy stretching back half a century.

Marcus whispered,

"This could bring down governments."

Arthur corrected him quietly.

"No."

"It could bring down history."

The hologram suddenly changed.

Its expression became urgent.

"If Lily is with you..."

Every adult instinctively looked toward the little girl.

The hologram smiled.

"My beautiful granddaughter."

Lily blinked.

"You can see me?"

The recorded image laughed softly.

"No, sweetheart."

"But I hoped one day..."

"...you'd be standing exactly where you are now."

Lily smiled shyly.

"Grandma?"

"I love you."

Even Ross had to look away.

Then the recording took a darker turn.

"There is something I never told Arthur."

Arthur looked up sharply.

Emma continued.

"The Archive has two purposes."

"The first..."

"...is to expose the truth."

"The second..."

"...is to hide one final secret."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

He whispered,

"So there really is another chamber."

Arthur stared.

"What?"

"You never told me."

Emma nodded gently.

"I couldn't."

"Not even you."

She looked directly at Evelyn.

"The entrance..."

"...can only be opened by someone who carries my blood..."

"...and remembers the lullaby."

Silence.

Evelyn frowned.

"What lullaby?"

Lily suddenly began humming.

Softly.

Absentmindedly.

A melody.

Simple.

Gentle.

The room froze.

Arthur's face drained of color.

Emma smiled through the recording.

"I knew she'd remember."

Evelyn looked down in shock.

"Lily..."

"Where did you learn that?"

The child shrugged.

"You used to sing it."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I've never sung that song."

"I don't even know it."

Lily stopped humming.

"But..."

"A lady sings it to me."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Arthur whispered,

"What lady?"

Lily pointed toward the ceiling.

"The one in my dreams."

No one spoke.

Not even Gabriel.

Suddenly...

A low mechanical rumble echoed beneath the floor.

The stone beneath the hologram cracked.

Dust drifted upward.

Ross stepped back.

"What's happening?"

Ancient gears groaned somewhere deep below.

Emma's hologram smiled one final time.

"If the chamber is opening..."

"...then it means..."

"...she truly is the last heir."

The projection faded.

Darkness reclaimed the far end of the Archive.

Then...

With a deafening crash...

The center of the floor split apart.

A spiral staircase slowly rose from beneath the stone.

Cold air drifted upward.

Along with something else.

The unmistakable scent of old paper...

And cedar wood.

Arthur whispered in disbelief.

"I searched for that entrance..."

"...for twenty years."

Gabriel looked at Lily.

"It wasn't waiting..."

"...for any of us."

It had been waiting...

May you like

For her.
