CHAPTER 9: THE FIRST EXPERIMENT

The alarm screamed.
Red lights flashed across the walls.
The countdown continued.
00:04:18
Daniel smelled it before he saw it.
A sharp chemical scent.
Gas.
The same kind of gas used in old laboratory experiments.
The same kind of gas that had filled the rooms where children were trained to obey.
But this time...
The target wasn't a child.
It was him.
"Move!"
Emily grabbed Daniel's arm.
They ran.
Behind them, the room filled with white vapor.
Daniel looked back one last time.
The chair.
The drawings.
The names carved into the wall.
All disappearing behind the fog.
Twenty-six years of secrets.
Vanishing.
They reached the end of the corridor.
The emergency door refused to open.
Emily slammed her palm against the access panel.
"He's sealed the exits."
Daniel pulled out his weapon.
"Move."
"Daniel, no."
He fired at the lock.
Once.
Twice.
The metal sparked.
The door remained closed.
Emily shook her head.
"These doors were designed to survive explosions."
Daniel looked around.
"Then there must be another way."
"You don't understand."
She grabbed his shoulder.
"This place wasn't built to keep people out."
A pause.
"It was built to keep people in."
The gas crept closer.
Daniel searched the walls.
Old laboratories.
Old ventilation systems.
Old emergency markings.
Then he saw it.
A faded symbol.
A white raven.
Beside it...
A small arrow pointing downward.
"Basement?"
Emily's expression changed.
"That's not a basement."
"What is it?"
"The original facility."
Daniel frowned.
"This isn't the original?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"The building above is just a shell."
"The real Raven Institute is underneath."
They opened the hidden entrance.
A staircase descended into darkness.
The deeper they went...
The colder it became.
The walls changed.
No longer abandoned.
No longer damaged.
Everything below was spotless.
New.
Maintained.
Someone had been using this place recently.
Emily whispered:
"He never stopped."
Daniel looked at her.
"Who funded this?"
She didn't answer.
"You know."
Her silence was enough.
Children's Hospital
Emma sat beside Lily's empty bed.
The room felt impossibly quiet.
She had failed.
That thought kept repeating.
She promised Lily.
She promised she would protect her.
A doctor entered.
"Emma."
She looked up.
"Any news?"
The doctor hesitated.
"Security found something."
He handed her a small envelope.
"It was left in Lily's room."
Emma opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A picture of Lily.
Taken moments before she disappeared.
She was standing.
Not in a wheelchair.
Standing.
On the back of the photo were handwritten words:
SHE WAS NEVER THE VICTIM.
Emma frowned.
Then another line appeared beneath it.
Written in different handwriting.
NEITHER WERE YOU.
Emma froze.
Because she recognized the handwriting.
Her own.
Underground Raven Facility
Daniel and Emily entered the main chamber.
The room was enormous.
Thousands of files lined the walls.
Medical equipment filled the center.
At the far end...
A giant glass observation room.
Inside was a chair.
And a small table.
With two nameplates.
SUBJECT ZERO
SUBJECT ONE
Daniel stared.
"Why are our names here?"
Emily looked away.
"Because we were the beginning."
A monitor turned on.
Mercer's face appeared.
"Welcome home."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where is Lily?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
"Closer than you think."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Show yourself."
Mercer smiled.
"You still believe seeing something makes it real."
The screen changed.
A video appeared.
A young Daniel.
Ten years old.
Sitting in the same chair.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"No..."
The video played.
A younger Mercer stood beside him.
"Daniel."
The boy looked terrified.
"What happens if I forget?"
Mercer smiled.
"You won't."
"Your mind is stronger than Emily's."
The young Daniel cried.
"I want my sister."
Mercer leaned closer.
"Then remember."
The video cut.
Another began.
Emily.
Age six.
Same chair.
Same room.
But unlike Daniel...
She wasn't crying.
She was staring directly at Mercer.
"I know what you're doing."
Young Emily said.
Mercer smiled.
"And what am I doing?"
"You're trying to make us afraid."
The recording froze.
Emily beside Daniel whispered:
"I fought him."
Daniel looked at her.
"You were six."
"I know."
"But I knew he was lying."
A sound came from behind them.
A door opening.
Daniel turned.
A figure walked out.
Black gloves.
Gray suit.
Dr. Adrian Mercer.
Alive.
Not a recording.
Not a voice.
Him.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Mercer smiled.
"Finally."
They stared at each other.
Twenty-six years.
Two survivors.
One monster.
"Where is Lily?"
Mercer glanced at Emily.
"Still protecting others."
Then at Daniel.
"Still asking the same question."
Daniel aimed.
"Answer me."
Mercer sighed.
"You really haven't changed."
"Always saving someone else."
He stepped closer.
"Do you know why Lily was successful?"
Daniel said nothing.
"Because of you."
"What?"
Mercer smiled.
"Every experiment needs a control."
"The children needed someone to compare against."
Daniel's face hardened.
"No."
"Yes."
"You weren't just a victim."
"You were the model."
Emily looked horrified.
"Daniel..."
Mercer continued.
"The child who lost everything but kept fighting."
"The child who remembered love despite trauma."
"The child who proved my theory."
Daniel's voice became cold.
"And what theory was that?"
Mercer answered:
"That pain doesn't destroy people."
"It reveals what they truly are."
Suddenly...
A door opened behind Mercer.
Lily walked out.
Alive.
Unharmed.
But different.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't afraid.
She looked directly at Daniel.
"You're Subject Zero."
Daniel froze.
"Lily..."
She walked closer.
"I remember now."
Emily stepped forward.
"Lily, don't listen to him."
But Lily looked at Mercer.
Then back at Daniel.
"I remember the other children."
"I remember Emily."
"I remember..."
Her voice broke.
"...you."
Daniel stared.
"What?"
Lily whispered:
"You were there."
The room went silent.
Mercer smiled.
"Tell him."
Lily looked at Daniel.
"When they took me..."
"I saw you."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"You were older."
"You were wearing a uniform."
"You told me..."
She swallowed.
"...that you would come back."
Daniel felt the blood leave his face.
Impossible.
He had never met Lily.
He had never been near the Raven Institute.
At least...
That was what he believed.
Lily took one more step.
"You promised all of us."
A tear rolled down her face.
"But you never came."
The countdown on the wall restarted.
Not five minutes.
Not ten.
A new timer appeared.
FINAL PHASE: ACTIVATED
Mercer smiled.
"Now..."
"We find out whether the hero was real..."
May you like
"Or just another experiment."
