CHAPTER 6: SUBJECT ONE

Lily couldn't breathe.
The words echoed inside her head like a bell struck in an empty church.
Subject One.
She looked from the man to the woman in the white coat.
Then back again.
"I don't understand."
The man smiled.
"I know."
"You weren't supposed to."
He pulled out a chair and sat across from her, his movements calm and deliberate.
"My name is Dr. Adrian Mercer."
He extended a gloved hand as though greeting an honored guest.
Lily didn't take it.
She shrank back.
"I want Emma."
"I know."
"I want Investigator Daniel."
"I know."
"I want to go home."
Mercer's expression softened.
"My dear..."
He folded his hands.
"You've never actually been home."
Children's Hospital
Daniel stood before a wall-sized map.
Every confirmed Raven Institute location had been marked in red.
There were only four.
Each one had been abandoned for over a decade.
Officer Ruiz entered carrying a laptop.
"We recovered deleted files from the basement computer."
Daniel looked up.
"Anything useful?"
Ruiz nodded.
"One video survived."
"Only one?"
"The others were remotely erased."
Daniel plugged the drive into a secure workstation.
The video loaded.
Time stamp:
Three Years Earlier.
The picture was grainy.
A small examination room came into view.
Lily sat on an examination table.
She looked healthy.
She laughed as someone off-camera rolled a toy car toward her.
Then the camera shifted.
Dr. Adrian Mercer stepped into frame.
No gloves.
No gray hair.
Three years younger.
Daniel froze.
"That's him."
Ruiz frowned.
"You've seen him?"
"At the hospital sketch."
The technician beside them enlarged the image.
Mercer smiled warmly at four-year-old Lily.
His voice sounded gentle.
"Would you like to play a game?"
Lily giggled.
"What game?"
"I'm going to tell you a story."
"If you remember the story, you get ice cream."
She nodded excitedly.
Mercer held up two dolls.
One standing.
One sitting in a tiny wheelchair.
"This doll is sick."
He pointed to the standing doll.
"And this doll is healthy."
Then...
He switched them while Lily blinked.
"So which one is sick now?"
"The wheelchair one."
"Excellent."
The screen cut.
Another clip began.
Day Seven.
Mercer asked again.
"Can healthy children walk?"
"Yes."
"What about sick children?"
"They stay in wheelchairs."
Day Thirty.
"Can you walk?"
Lily hesitated.
"I... don't know."
Day Ninety.
"Can you walk?"
"No."
"Good girl."
Daniel felt his fists clench.
This wasn't merely psychological abuse.
It was systematic conditioning.
A child had been taught to distrust her own body.
Unknown Location
Mercer placed an old photo album in Lily's lap.
"Open it."
She didn't move.
He waited.
Finally, curiosity overcame fear.
She opened the first page.
There were eight children.
All around the same age.
Each wearing identical blue sweaters.
Each smiling at the camera.
Lily pointed.
"That's me."
Mercer nodded.
"Yes."
"What about them?"
"They lived with you."
"I don't remember."
"You will."
He turned another page.
Birthday parties.
Group lessons.
Outdoor games.
Every picture included the same eight children.
No adults except Mercer.
Lily frowned.
"Where are their parents?"
Mercer's smile disappeared.
"They never came."
The steel door opened.
The woman in the lab coat returned.
"Sir."
"The memory specialist is ready."
Mercer nodded.
"Good."
Lily looked frightened.
"What's a memory specialist?"
Mercer stood.
"Someone who helps people remember."
He walked toward the door.
"Don't be afraid."
"You've already done the hardest part."
FBI Field Office
Daniel's phone rang.
Caller ID:
Washington, D.C.
He answered immediately.
"This is Carter."
"This is Assistant Director Evelyn Ross."
Her tone was sharp.
"I've reviewed your preliminary report."
Daniel waited.
"You need to stop investigating the Raven Institute."
His eyebrows rose.
"Excuse me?"
"The case has been transferred."
"To whom?"
"Classified."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"A child has been abducted."
"I understand."
"No, you don't."
"Investigator Carter."
Her tone became icy.
"That is a direct order."
The line went dead.
Ruiz stared.
"What was that about?"
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
"They're taking us off the case."
Ruiz blinked.
"Why?"
Daniel looked toward the frozen image of Dr. Mercer on the screen.
"Because someone important is protecting him."
One Hour Later
Daniel ignored the order.
Instead, he drove to the abandoned headquarters of the Raven Institute.
The building stood isolated at the edge of a dense forest.
Windows boarded.
Chain-link fences rusted with age.
According to official records, no one had entered in twelve years.
The padlock on the front gate...
Was brand new.
Daniel exchanged a glance with Ruiz.
"Someone's maintaining this place."
They climbed the fence.
The front doors were chained shut.
Ruiz found another entrance around the back.
A service door.
Unlocked.
Inside...
Everything was covered in dust.
Except the footprints.
Fresh footprints.
Leading deeper into the building.
Daniel drew his flashlight.
The beam swept across peeling walls.
Old medical posters.
Broken wheelchairs.
Empty filing cabinets.
Then...
Children's laughter.
Very faint.
Ruiz stopped.
"You hear that?"
Daniel nodded.
The laughter echoed somewhere beneath them.
A basement.
They followed the sound to an old elevator.
Dead.
No power.
Beside it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
The laughter stopped.
Silence.
Daniel descended first.
Each step creaked beneath his boots.
The basement was enormous.
Far larger than the building above suggested.
Rows of abandoned examination rooms stretched into darkness.
Some still contained hospital beds.
Others held strange neurological equipment.
Most had doors hanging open.
At the very end of the corridor...
One room remained brightly lit.
Someone was inside.
Daniel approached carefully.
The door stood slightly ajar.
He pushed it open.
The room was empty.
Except for a single projector.
It suddenly switched on by itself.
Mercer's face filled the screen.
He looked directly into the camera.
As though speaking to Daniel personally.
"Welcome, Investigator Carter."
Daniel's heart skipped.
"You've been remarkably persistent."
The recorded Mercer smiled.
"If you're watching this, then you've already ignored your superiors."
"Good."
"That tells me I judged your character correctly."
Ruiz whispered,
"How does he know you'll come here?"
The recording continued.
"You probably think you're hunting me."
A pause.
"But you've misunderstood."
Mercer leaned closer to the camera.
"I've been studying you."
Daniel felt a chill crawl up his spine.
The doctor continued.
"You remind me of someone."
"Someone who also believed every child deserved saving."
He smiled sadly.
"He failed."
The projector flickered.
Another image appeared.
Not Lily.
Not Mercer.
A photograph.
A younger Daniel Carter.
Approximately twelve years old.
Standing beside a woman and a little girl.
Ruiz stared in disbelief.
"That's..."
Daniel couldn't speak.
He had never seen that photograph before.
Mercer's voice returned.
"Tell me, Daniel..."
"Do you remember what happened to your sister?"
The projector shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Daniel stood frozen.
Because he had never told anyone he once had a younger sister.
Not even his own team.
And according to every official record...
She had died in a house fire twenty-six years earlier.
Yet taped beneath the projector...
Was a second photograph.
One taken only six months ago.
It showed the same little sister.
Alive.
May you like
Standing beside Dr. Adrian Mercer.
Smiling at the camera.
