BONUS CHAPTER: THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER COUNTED

Three years later.
The world had almost forgotten the name Raven Institute.
Almost.
The headlines had faded.
The court cases had slowed.
The photographs of rescued children no longer appeared on every news channel.
People moved on.
That was what people did.
They survived.
They healed.
They forgot.
But Daniel Carter had learned one thing during his years investigating the impossible:
The things people forgot were often the things that came back.
The rain tapped softly against the window of Daniel's office.
A small apartment.
Nothing luxurious.
Nothing impressive.
Just a place filled with files, old photographs, and too many cups of coffee.
On the wall were three pictures.
Emily.
Lily.
The children rescued from Raven.
Daniel looked at them every morning.
A reminder.
Not of what happened.
But of why it mattered.
His phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Daniel almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then he answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Only breathing.
Slow.
Careful.
Like someone on the other end was deciding whether to speak.
Daniel sat up.
"Who is this?"
A child's voice answered.
"Are you Daniel Carter?"
His expression changed.
"Yes."
"Do you remember me?"
Daniel looked toward the photographs.
"Who are you?"
The child hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The one who was never counted."
Thirty minutes later.
Daniel stood outside an abandoned train station.
The location had been sent by text.
No explanation.
No name.
Just coordinates.
He hated that.
Every instinct told him it was a trap.
But every instinct also told him something else.
A child was involved.
And Daniel had made a promise long ago.
Never again.
Never let a child face the darkness alone.
The station had been abandoned for fifteen years.
Broken windows.
Rusting signs.
Empty platforms.
Daniel walked slowly through the building.
"Hello?"
No answer.
Then...
A small voice.
"You're late."
Daniel turned.
A boy sat on an old wooden bench.
Maybe eight years old.
Dark hair.
A worn jacket.
Calm eyes.
Too calm.
Daniel immediately recognized that look.
The look of a child who had learned how to survive before learning how to play.
"What's your name?"
The boy looked down.
"I don't have one."
Daniel frowned.
"Everyone has a name."
The boy shook his head.
"Not everyone."
Daniel sat across from him.
"Who told you to contact me?"
The boy looked toward the darkness behind him.
"She did."
Daniel's heart tightened.
"Who?"
The boy answered:
"Anna."
For a moment...
The entire world stopped.
Daniel studied the child.
"Where is she?"
The boy didn't answer.
Instead, he handed Daniel a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel's fingers froze.
Four children.
The same photograph from before.
Daniel.
Emily.
Anna.
And the unknown child.
But this time...
There was writing underneath.
SUBJECT TWO
Daniel looked at the boy.
"You're Subject Two."
The boy nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel's mind raced.
"Why didn't Raven have your file?"
The boy smiled sadly.
"Because I wasn't part of Raven."
"What?"
"I was before Raven."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Before?"
The boy nodded.
"Anna wasn't the first."
"She was the second."
A cold wind passed through the station.
Daniel stared.
"Who was the first?"
The boy looked at him.
"You know."
"No."
"You do."
The boy pointed at Daniel.
"You were there."
Daniel froze.
Again.
That phrase.
The same impossible truth.
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
The boy reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old device.
A recording player.
Daniel recognized it instantly.
The same type used by Raven.
The boy pressed play.
Static.
Then...
A woman's voice.
Daniel knew it immediately.
His mother.
"If you're hearing this..."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"Then the experiment failed."
The recording continued.
"Anna was never supposed to lead."
"She was supposed to observe."
"But she became attached."
"She started caring."
A pause.
Then:
"That was our mistake."
Daniel looked at the boy.
"What does this mean?"
The boy answered:
"Anna wasn't trying to create stronger humans."
"She was trying to find the person who could stop the original creator."
Daniel's face changed.
"Original creator?"
The boy nodded.
"The person who started everything."
A new sound echoed through the station.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Approaching.
Daniel immediately stood.
"Stay behind me."
The boy didn't move.
Because he wasn't afraid.
That scared Daniel.
A figure appeared at the end of the platform.
A woman.
Long coat.
Dark hair.
Older.
But familiar.
Daniel whispered:
"Anna."
She stopped.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she smiled.
"You found him."
Daniel looked furious.
"You knew?"
Anna nodded.
"Of course."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you weren't ready."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"That's your excuse for everything."
Anna looked at the boy.
"No."
"This time..."
She looked back at Daniel.
"...I was protecting you."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who is he?"
Anna's expression changed.
Something between sadness and fear.
"He's the reason Raven existed."
Daniel looked at the boy.
"Why?"
Anna answered:
"Because he was the first proof."
"Proof of what?"
Anna whispered:
"That a child could be created without ever being born."
Silence.
The boy looked down.
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
"Created?"
Anna nodded.
"Before me."
"Before Emily."
"Before Lily."
"There was him."
The boy finally spoke.
"My name is Noah."
Daniel looked at him.
"Why contact me?"
Noah looked directly into his eyes.
"Because the person who created me..."
A pause.
"...is creating another one."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"Another child?"
Noah nodded.
"Yes."
"Where?"
The boy looked toward the dark tunnel beneath the station.
"The original facility."
Daniel frowned.
"I thought Raven was destroyed."
Anna's expression became serious.
"Raven was destroyed."
A pause.
"But the thing that created Raven..."
She looked at Daniel.
"Was never destroyed."
Daniel stared into the darkness.
Three years of peace.
Three years believing the nightmare had ended.
Gone.
Destroyed.
But now he understood.
The Raven Institute was never the monster.
It was only a shadow.
A shadow cast by something much older.
Something still alive.
Noah handed Daniel one final photograph.
A newborn child.
A white raven symbol beside the crib.
And underneath...
A name.
Daniel read it.
Then his face went pale.
Because the name belonged to someone who should not exist.
SUBJECT ZERO-TWO: CARTER.
Anna whispered:
"Daniel..."
"The next experiment isn't about creating a stronger child."
"It's about creating a replacement."
The lights in the abandoned station flickered.
The boy named Noah looked toward the darkness.
And for the first time...
He looked afraid.
Because something in the tunnel answered.
A child's voice.
Soft.
Cold.
Almost identical to Daniel's.
"Father..."
The station went silent.
Daniel froze.
Because he had never had a son.
And yet...
May you like
The voice knew his name.
