CHAPTER 10: THE MEMORY THAT WASN'T HIS

The words echoed through the underground chamber.

"You promised all of us."

Daniel stared at Lily.

His mind rejected the possibility.

Every instinct screamed that it couldn't be true.

He had never seen her.

Never met her.

Never entered this place.

Yet the fear in Lily's eyes wasn't fake.

The pain wasn't manufactured.

She remembered something.

Something involving him.

"Daniel..."

Emily's voice was barely audible.

He looked at her.

"You knew?"

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

His chest tightened.

"You knew."

Emily looked away.

"I suspected."

"Suspected what?"

"That Mercer didn't just erase memories."

The room became silent.

"He replaced them."

Mercer walked slowly around the observation chamber.

Almost like a professor giving a lecture.

"Memory is fascinating."

"People believe memories are recordings."

"They're not."

"They're stories."

Daniel watched him carefully.

"And stories can be rewritten."

Mercer stopped beside Lily.

"Children are especially interesting."

"Their identities are still forming."

"A single repeated message."

"A single carefully planted image."

"A single trusted voice..."

He looked at Daniel.

"Can create an entirely new reality."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"What did you do to me?"

Mercer smiled.

"Now you're asking the right question."

A monitor behind Mercer turned on.

A video appeared.

Daniel saw himself.

Not as an adult.

As a child.

Ten years old.

Walking through the Raven Institute.

His younger self held a clipboard.

Writing notes.

Daniel stopped breathing.

"No..."

Emily whispered:

"I saw it."

"When?"

"Years ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you wouldn't have believed me."

The video continued.

Young Daniel entered a room.

Inside were children.

Eight of them.

Including Emily.

Including Lily.

Except Lily wasn't seven.

She was four.

Young Daniel knelt beside her.

"You have to be brave."

Little Lily cried.

"I want my mommy."

Young Daniel looked terrified.

But he whispered:

"Don't let them make you forget."

Daniel backed away from the screen.

"No."

His voice shook.

"That's not me."

Mercer turned.

"Yes."

"It is."

Daniel grabbed his head.

Suddenly...

Pain.

A sharp, unbearable pain behind his eyes.

Images flooded in.

Not memories.

Fragments.

A hallway.

A locked door.

Emily crying.

A young Lily holding a stuffed rabbit.

A woman screaming.

A fire.

Mercer standing in smoke.

Then...

Darkness.

Daniel fell to his knees.

Emily rushed toward him.

"Daniel!"

He pushed her away.

Not because he wanted to.

Because he was afraid.

Afraid of what he had just seen.

"What did they do to me?"

Emily knelt beside him.

"They made you forget."

"Why?"

"Because you were the only one who escaped mentally."

Daniel looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Emily swallowed.

"Everyone else either broke..."

"Or became dependent on Mercer."

"But you..."

She looked at him.

"You hated him."

Lily approached slowly.

Daniel looked at her.

"Why do you remember me?"

The little girl hugged the blanket around herself.

"Because you gave me this."

She reached into her pocket.

A small object fell into her hand.

A broken metal pin.

A silver raven.

Daniel stared.

His own childhood necklace.

He recognized the scratch on the side.

He had made it himself.

When he was ten.

He gave it to Emily.

Or...

He thought he did.

Mercer watched silently.

"You see?"

"You spent your life believing you were the investigator hunting the monster."

"But you were part of the story from the beginning."

Daniel stood.

Slowly.

"You manipulated me."

"Yes."

"You made me forget."

"Yes."

"You made me spend twenty-six years searching for someone who was alive."

Mercer tilted his head.

"Yes."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Why?"

For the first time...

Mercer's expression changed.

Not anger.

Not amusement.

Something closer to disappointment.

"Because I wanted to know if you would still become a good man."

Silence.

Daniel stared.

"What?"

Mercer walked closer.

"You were exposed to the same trauma as the others."

"Same environment."

"Same fear."

"Same manipulation."

"But you became an investigator."

"You dedicated your life to saving children."

"That was the final result I wanted."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You destroyed people to prove a theory."

Mercer nodded.

"Yes."

"And that is why you failed."

The lights suddenly flickered.

A warning appeared on the screens.

FINAL PHASE: 02:00

Emily looked up.

"What is that?"

Mercer smiled.

"The final evaluation."

Daniel turned.

"Evaluation of what?"

Mercer looked at him.

"Whether you truly changed."

A door opened.

Behind it...

A room full of monitors.

Each showing a different child.

Children from the Raven files.

Some missing.

Some alive.

Some unknown.

Then Daniel saw one screen.

Emma.

At Children's Hospital.

She was unconscious.

Connected to medical equipment.

Another screen.

Ethan.

Locked inside a vehicle.

Another.

A child Daniel had never seen.

Crying alone.

Mercer spoke:

"You can save only one."

Daniel froze.

"No."

"Choose."

"I won't play this game."

Mercer smiled.

"That answer is why I chose you."

Daniel looked at the screens.

"This isn't a choice."

"Of course it is."

"You always believed every life mattered."

"So prove it."

The countdown continued.

01:35

Emily grabbed Daniel's arm.

"Don't choose."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"That's what he wants."

Mercer smiled.

"Excellent."

"Subject One understands."

Daniel looked between them.

Mercer continued.

"Every experiment has a conclusion."

"The children learned fear."

"Lily learned courage."

"Emily learned sacrifice."

"And you..."

He pointed at Daniel.

"...will learn the truth about yourself."

The countdown reached:

01:00

Suddenly, every screen changed.

Not children.

Not victims.

Only Daniel.

Hundreds of images.

Daniel as a child.

Daniel as a teenager.

Daniel as an investigator.

Then one final video appeared.

A recording made only six months earlier.

Daniel walked into the Raven Institute.

Alive.

Conscious.

Voluntarily.

He watched himself sit across from Mercer.

And say words that made his blood freeze.

"I remember everything."

Present-day Daniel stepped back.

Because the person on the screen...

Was him.

And the date was after the fire.

After Emily disappeared.

After he believed the Raven Institute was gone.

The recording continued.

His younger voice said:

"Erase me."

Mercer asked:

"Are you sure?"

Daniel answered:

"Yes."

"Because if I remember..."

A pause.

"I'll become just like him."

The screen went black.

The countdown stopped.

Mercer looked directly at Daniel.

"Now you understand."

Daniel whispered:

"What did I do?"

Mercer smiled.

"You didn't forget because I forced you."

May you like

"You forgot because you begged me to."
