CHAPTER 11: THE MAN WHO ASKED TO FORGET

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The underground chamber was silent except for the low hum of machines.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
The final words remained in his mind.
"You forgot because you begged me to."
Impossible.
That was the only thought he could form.
Impossible.
He had spent his entire life believing someone had stolen his memories.
That someone had taken his childhood away.
That Mercer was the monster who had controlled him.
But now...
A terrifying possibility appeared.
What if Mercer wasn't the one who erased his past?
What if Daniel had chosen it?
"He's lying."
Emily's voice cut through the silence.
Daniel looked at her.
"You don't know that."
"Yes, I do."
"How?"
Her expression became painful.
"Because I was there."
A heavy silence followed.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What do you mean?"
Emily looked at Mercer.
Then back at him.
"Twenty-six years ago..."
"After the fire."
"After our parents were gone."
"You came back here."
Daniel's face changed.
"No."
"You did."
"You were looking for me."
"You found the Institute."
"And you found out what they were doing."
Daniel shook his head.
"I was ten."
"You were ten."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"But you were always different."
"You noticed things adults ignored."
"You remembered faces."
"You remembered voices."
She touched the silver raven pin in Lily's hand.
"You remembered me."
Mercer walked toward the center of the room.
"Daniel was not my first experiment."
"He was my first failure."
Daniel looked at him.
"Failure?"
"Yes."
"Because I thought trauma would create weakness."
"But you created something unexpected."
"Resistance."
Mercer looked toward the screens.
"Most children adapted by accepting the reality given to them."
"But Daniel questioned everything."
"Every rule."
"Every command."
"Every lie."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"So you erased me."
"No."
Mercer shook his head.
"You erased yourself."
The memory came back.
Not as a picture.
As a feeling.
A ten-year-old boy sitting in a cold room.
Hands shaking.
Tears running down his face.
Mercer standing nearby.
And Daniel saying:
"I don't want to remember anymore."
The adult Daniel staggered backward.
"No..."
Emily caught him.
"You were protecting yourself."
"From what?"
Her voice softened.
"From becoming him."
Daniel looked toward Mercer.
The doctor didn't deny it.
"You had two choices," Mercer said.
"Remember everything."
"Or forget."
Daniel stared.
"And you let a child choose?"
"I gave you control."
"You took it away from everyone else."
Mercer smiled faintly.
"That is why you're still angry."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Because I should be."
"Maybe."
Mercer turned toward Lily.
"But anger is interesting."
"It keeps people alive."
A loud alarm suddenly interrupted.
The monitors changed.
SECURITY BREACH DETECTED
Mercer's expression changed for the first time.
A small crack appeared in his confidence.
Daniel noticed.
Someone had surprised him.
"Who is that?"
No answer.
The screens switched.
A security camera appeared.
A woman entered the underground facility.
She wore a dark coat.
Walked calmly.
Confidently.
Mercer's face went pale.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Daniel looked at him.
"You know her."
Mercer didn't respond.
The woman reached the central chamber.
The door opened.
Everyone froze.
Because she looked exactly like...
Emily.
But older.
Much older.
Emily beside Daniel whispered:
"Mother."
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared.
"Your mother?"
Emily nodded slowly.
The woman looked at Mercer.
"You promised me."
Her voice was cold.
"You promised the children would be released."
Mercer stepped back.
"I fulfilled my promise."
"No."
The woman looked around the chamber.
"You continued."
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
Their mother was alive.
Not dead.
Not gone.
Alive.
And she had known.
All these years.
"You lied to us."
Daniel's voice shook with anger.
The woman looked at him.
For a moment...
Something like sadness crossed her face.
"Daniel."
He froze.
She knew his name.
Of course she did.
"You were just a child."
"No."
His voice became colder.
"I was your child."
The words hit harder than any accusation.
The woman looked away.
Mercer spoke quietly.
"She was the one who started it."
Daniel turned.
"What?"
Emily looked at Mercer.
"Don't."
But he continued.
"The Raven Institute wasn't created by me."
"It was created by your mother."
Daniel looked at the woman.
"No."
She didn't deny it.
His entire world shifted again.
"Why?"
The woman took a breath.
"Because I wanted to understand something."
"Understand what?"
"Why some children survive unbearable pain..."
"And others don't."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"So you experimented on your own children?"
"I tried to protect you."
"By destroying us?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I made mistakes."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mistakes?"
He pointed around the room.
"These aren't mistakes."
"These are lives."
Lily suddenly spoke.
"Where are the others?"
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl stood straight.
Not shaking.
Not afraid.
"All the children."
"Where are they?"
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small red light blinking on the far wall.
A hidden camera.
Mercer looked at it.
And smiled.
Too late.
Daniel followed his gaze.
"What?"
Mercer whispered:
"They're watching."
The monitors turned on.
Hundreds of screens.
Every missing child.
Every subject.
Every file.
All connected.
Then one screen appeared.
A girl.
About eight years old.
Standing in a room.
Behind her...
A familiar symbol.
White raven.
Daniel stared.
Because he recognized the girl.
She was in every old photograph.
The one child who was never labeled.
No number.
No file.
No record.
The original.
Emily looked horrified.
"No..."
Daniel turned.
"Who is she?"
Emily whispered:
"The one Mercer was afraid of."
The girl on the screen looked directly into the camera.
Then spoke.
"Hello, Daniel."
Everyone froze.
Because her voice sounded exactly like Lily's.
But she was older.
Much older.
And the message she delivered was only seven words.
"Subject Zero was never the beginning."
The screen changed.
A new file opened.
SUBJECT ZERO: DANIEL CARTER
SUBJECT ONE: EMILY CARTER
SUBJECT UNKNOWN: ORIGINAL
Below it...
A photograph appeared.
A child holding both Daniel and Emily's hands.
A child neither of them remembered.
Mercer's voice became a whisper.
May you like
"She's awake."
