CHAPTER 7: THE SISTER WHO NEVER DIED

The photograph slipped from Daniel's hand.
It landed face down on the concrete floor.
For several seconds, he couldn't move.
Couldn't speak.
Couldn't even think.
Because the world he had built his entire life around had just cracked down the middle.
His sister was dead.
That was the one truth he had never questioned.
Not once.
Not after twenty-six years.
Not after every investigation.
Not after every nightmare.
Not after every birthday that passed without her.
Dead.
Gone.
A memory.
A ghost.
But the photograph lying beneath his feet said otherwise.
"Daniel."
Ruiz's voice sounded distant.
"Who is she?"
Daniel didn't answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
The girl in the picture wasn't just someone who looked like his sister.
It was her.
The same dark hair.
The same small scar above her eyebrow.
The same crooked smile she had whenever she was trying not to laugh.
His little sister, Emily.
The girl who disappeared in a fire when she was six years old.
The girl whose body was never found.
The girl everyone told him he needed to stop searching for.
"She survived."
Daniel finally whispered.
Ruiz looked confused.
"What?"
"My sister."
His voice cracked slightly.
"She survived."
Before Ruiz could respond, the projector flickered back on.
Mercer's face appeared again.
"Hello, Daniel."
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
"Where is she?"
No answer.
"Where is my sister?"
The recording continued.
"Twenty-six years ago, you lost Emily Carter."
Daniel froze.
"Officially, she died in a fire."
The image changed.
A newspaper article appeared.
LOCAL FAMILY DESTROYED IN HOUSE FIRE.
YOUNG GIRL PRESUMED DEAD.
Mercer continued.
"But official records are sometimes written by people who need the truth to disappear."
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"You took her."
"No."
Mercer's expression became serious.
"Someone else did."
The screen changed again.
A young girl sat in a room.
Not Emily.
Another child.
Daniel recognized the setting immediately.
The Raven Institute.
"Years ago, we studied how children responded to trauma."
Mercer's voice became colder.
"Fear."
"Isolation."
"Manipulation."
"But one thing fascinated us."
The image showed children playing together.
"Children adapt."
"Even in darkness."
"Some break."
"Some survive."
"Some become something extraordinary."
The video paused.
Then a picture appeared.
Emily.
Six years old.
Wearing the same blue sweater as the other children.
Daniel stepped back.
"No..."
Mercer continued.
"Emily was Subject One."
The words hit harder than any weapon.
Subject One.
Lily wasn't the beginning.
She was the latest.
Emily came first.
Daniel's hands shook.
"What did you do to her?"
The recording showed Mercer looking directly into the camera.
"I saved her."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Saved her?"
"You stole her childhood."
"You destroyed children."
"You call that saving?"
Mercer didn't react.
"You're still thinking emotionally."
"That's your weakness."
Daniel stared.
"My weakness?"
"You always believe love is enough."
A pause.
"But love doesn't protect children."
"Preparation does."
The screen went dark.
Back at the Raven Institute...
Daniel and Ruiz searched every room.
They found hundreds of files.
Most destroyed.
But one cabinet remained untouched.
Inside were folders.
Not labeled by names.
Numbers.
Subject One.
Subject Two.
Subject Three.
...
Subject Eight.
Daniel opened Subject One.
Emily Carter.
Age: 6.
Initial evaluation.
High emotional resilience.
Exceptional memory retention.
Strong protective instincts.
Resistance to conditioning.
Daniel stopped reading.
Resistance.
Emily hadn't been easy to control.
The next page contained handwritten notes.
Subject One refuses to forget.
Subject One continues asking about family.
Subject One continues believing rescue is possible.
Then...
A final note.
Written years later.
Subject One cannot be broken.
Adjustment required.
Daniel stared at those words.
Cannot be broken.
His sister had survived.
A sound echoed from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.
"Who's there?"
Silence.
Then a voice answered.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Older.
"Daniel?"
His entire body froze.
No.
Impossible.
He knew that voice.
Even after twenty-six years.
Even after believing he would never hear it again.
"Emily?"
The footsteps approached.
A woman stepped into the doorway.
She was older now.
Not the little girl from the photograph.
But the eyes were the same.
The same eyes that looked at him from across their childhood kitchen.
The same eyes that cried when he left for school.
The same eyes he saw in every nightmare.
"Daniel..."
His weapon lowered.
He couldn't move.
She smiled sadly.
"You got old."
The words destroyed the last wall inside him.
Because that was exactly what Emily used to say whenever she saw their grandfather.
"You got old."
A joke only she would remember.
Daniel walked forward slowly.
"You're alive."
She nodded.
"I'm alive."
He stopped inches away.
"Why didn't you come home?"
Emily looked down.
The sadness in her face answered before her words did.
"I tried."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"I tried for years."
"Then why?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because every time I escaped..."
She looked toward the dark hallway.
"...they hurt someone else."
Daniel went still.
"Who?"
Emily whispered,
"The children."
A security alarm suddenly exploded through the building.
Red lights flashed.
Emily's expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"He's here."
Daniel looked around.
"Who?"
She grabbed his arm.
"We have to leave."
"Emily, who?"
She looked directly at him.
The answer came out barely above a whisper.
"Mercer."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"He's here?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
Then:
"He never left."
The lights shut off.
Every door in the corridor automatically locked.
A voice echoed through the speakers.
Mercer.
Calm.
Almost amused.
"Daniel."
"Emily."
"I was hoping this moment would happen."
Daniel pulled Emily behind him.
"Show yourself."
A soft laugh came through the speakers.
"You still think this is about catching me."
"It isn't."
Daniel looked up.
"Then what is it about?"
Silence.
Then Mercer answered.
"It's about showing you the truth."
A monitor beside them turned on.
A live video appeared.
Children's Hospital.
Lily's room.
Emma was there.
But she wasn't alone.
Standing behind her...
Was another person.
Wearing black gloves.
Daniel's blood turned cold.
Because he recognized the gloves.
And the voice that spoke next.
"Hello, Daniel."
It was not Mercer.
It was Emily.
But Emily was standing right beside him.
The woman on the screen smiled.
"Did you really think I was the only one who escaped?"
Daniel looked at the woman beside him.
Then at the screen.
Two Emilys.
Same face.
Same voice.
Same eyes.
One of them whispered:
"Daniel..."
The other said:
"Choose carefully."
May you like
The screen went black.
