CHAPTER 12: THE CHILD WITHOUT A NUMBER

The photograph filled the screen.
Three children.
Three pairs of eyes.
Three hands connected.
Daniel stared at the image.
His brain searched desperately for recognition.
A name.
A memory.
A single fragment.
Nothing.
The child in the middle was a stranger.
Yet every person in the room reacted as if they had seen a ghost.
Emily looked terrified.
Mercer looked afraid.
And Daniel...
Daniel felt something worse.
A strange emptiness.
Like his mind was reaching toward a locked door it knew it had opened before.
"Who is she?"
Daniel's voice was low.
Nobody answered.
He turned toward Mercer.
"You know."
The doctor remained silent.
For the first time since Daniel had met him...
Mercer looked uncertain.
Not confident.
Not in control.
Uncertain.
That frightened Daniel more than anything.
"Who is she?"
Mercer finally spoke.
"Her name is Anna."
Daniel waited.
"Anna what?"
Mercer's eyes remained fixed on the screen.
"Anna Carter."
The room went completely silent.
Daniel laughed once.
A hollow sound.
"No."
Nobody moved.
"My parents had two children."
"Me and Emily."
Emily looked at the floor.
Daniel noticed.
"You knew."
Her silence confirmed it.
"You knew."
She whispered:
"Yes."
The anger came instantly.
"You knew I had another sister?"
"No."
"Then what did you know?"
Emily looked at Anna's photograph.
"I knew there was someone before us."
Mercer walked toward the screen.
"Anna was the beginning."
"The first child."
"The first observation."
"The first attempt."
Daniel looked at him.
"Attempt at what?"
Mercer answered quietly:
"Creating a person who could survive anything."
The monitor changed.
An old video appeared.
A woman sat in a laboratory.
Younger.
Daniel recognized her.
His mother.
She held a baby.
A newborn.
Anna.
His mother's voice trembled.
"She's different."
A younger Mercer stood nearby.
"She's perfect."
Daniel's stomach turned.
The video continued.
The baby cried.
The room temperature changed.
Lights flickered.
Scientists watched from behind glass.
Daniel stepped back.
"What is this?"
Emily whispered:
"Anna was born here."
Daniel looked at her.
"Born?"
"Yes."
"She wasn't taken."
Emily shook her head.
"She was created."
The words hung in the air.
Created.
Daniel looked back at the screen.
A baby.
A child.
A person.
Not an experiment.
Not a number.
A human being.
Mercer continued.
"Anna was the first attempt to understand human adaptation."
"She had unusual neurological patterns."
"Exceptional memory."
"Extreme emotional awareness."
"She could read people."
"Predict behavior."
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible."
Mercer smiled sadly.
"That's what everyone said."
The video changed.
Anna at age five.
Sitting in the same chair.
But unlike the others...
She wasn't crying.
She stared at the camera.
Then spoke.
"You're scared."
The scientists froze.
A researcher asked:
"Who?"
Anna looked directly at the observation window.
"You."
The video stopped.
Daniel looked at Mercer.
"She knew."
"Yes."
"She knew everything."
"Yes."
"Then why isn't there a file?"
Mercer's expression darkened.
"Because she escaped the system."
Emily looked confused.
"How?"
Mercer looked at Daniel.
"Because of you."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
A memory hit him.
Not a fragment.
A flood.
A small hand.
His hand.
Holding someone's.
A little girl whispering:
"Don't cry."
A voice.
Anna.
"I know how to get out."
Daniel gasped.
He grabbed the table.
Emily rushed to him.
"Daniel!"
He looked at her.
"I remember."
The room became silent.
"What?"
Daniel's breathing was uneven.
"Anna."
"She helped us escape."
The memory unfolded.
Twenty-six years ago.
Three children.
Daniel.
Emily.
Anna.
Running through dark corridors.
Anna leading.
Not scared.
Not confused.
Knowing exactly where to go.
She opened doors.
Disabled alarms.
Avoided cameras.
She was six years old.
And she had planned an escape.
Then...
They reached the surface.
Freedom.
But something happened.
Daniel couldn't remember.
Only fire.
Only screaming.
Only Anna pushing them away.
"She saved us."
Daniel whispered.
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did everyone say she didn't exist?"
Emily looked toward Mercer.
"Because she disappeared."
The underground lights flickered.
The speakers activated.
A new voice entered.
Anna.
Not from the screen.
From the building itself.
"Hello, Daniel."
Everyone froze.
Mercer looked around.
"No."
Anna's voice continued.
"You spent years looking for answers."
"You were so close."
Daniel looked at the cameras.
"Where are you?"
A soft laugh.
"Everywhere."
The monitors changed.
Security feeds.
Thousands of cameras.
Everywhere.
Anna had access to everything.
Mercer stepped forward.
"Anna."
"Stop this."
The response was immediate.
"You don't get to tell me what to do."
Her voice changed.
Not angry.
Disappointed.
"You took children."
"You broke families."
"You called it research."
Mercer looked at the screens.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Anna replied.
"I understand perfectly."
A pause.
"That's why I ended it."
Daniel frowned.
"Ended what?"
The monitors switched again.
A map appeared.
Red dots spread across the world.
Facilities.
Laboratories.
Safe houses.
Hundreds.
Daniel felt sick.
"The Raven Institute..."
Mercer whispered:
"Was only one branch."
Anna continued.
"Mercer was never the leader."
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"Then who?"
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
At the top:
PROJECT RAVEN: ORIGINAL DIRECTOR
Below it...
A name.
Daniel stared.
Because the name belonged to someone he knew.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had ordered him to stop investigating.
Assistant Director Evelyn Ross.
Daniel stepped back.
"No."
Emily looked at him.
"You know her?"
Daniel couldn't answer.
He remembered the phone call.
The warning.
The order to stop.
The classified transfer.
She wasn't protecting Mercer.
She was protecting the Institute.
The screen displayed one final message.
PROJECT RAVEN IS ACTIVE.
PHASE THREE BEGINS IN 48 HOURS.
Daniel looked at Mercer.
Then Anna.
Then Emily.
A terrifying realization appeared.
The Raven Institute wasn't trying to hide anymore.
They were preparing something.
Something much bigger.
Anna's voice whispered:
"And Daniel..."
A pause.
"You need to know the truth about why you were chosen."
The lights went out.
Her final words echoed through the darkness.
"Because you were never Subject Zero."
Silence.
Then:
May you like
"You were the control group."
