CHAPTER 5: THE EMPTY HOSPITAL BED
Daniel didn't answer.
For one terrible second, his mind simply refused to process the words.
Lily was gone.
Rain drummed against the steel shipping containers around him, each drop sounding impossibly loud.
"Emma."
His voice became unnaturally calm.
"When?"
"Less than five minutes ago."
"Who has eyes on the exits?"
"Security locked the building, but..."
"But what?"
"We found her room empty."
Daniel was already running back toward the SUV.
"Stay where you are."
"No one leaves that floor."
"I'm on my way."
He ended the call.
Officer Ruiz looked at him.
"What happened?"
"They took Lily."
Ruiz's face turned pale.
"What about Ethan?"
Daniel stared at the brown package still lying in the middle of the shipping yard.
The note echoed in his head.
You're protecting the wrong child.
It hadn't been a bluff.
It had been a distraction.
"Call every unit back."
"We've been played."
Twenty Minutes Earlier...
Children's Hospital.
Lily had just finished another physical therapy session.
She was exhausted.
Each step still felt like climbing a mountain.
Emma helped her back into bed.
"You did wonderfully today."
Lily gave a tiny smile.
"My legs hurt."
"They're supposed to."
"They're waking up."
Lily looked down at them.
"They've been asleep a long time."
Emma nodded gently.
"Yes."
Before she could say anything else, someone knocked.
A nurse stepped inside.
"Excuse me."
"We're taking Lily downstairs for another scan."
Emma frowned.
"I wasn't informed."
"It was added ten minutes ago."
"Dr. Brooks signed it."
She handed over a clipboard.
Everything appeared legitimate.
Hospital logo.
Doctor's signature.
Correct patient information.
Emma hesitated only a moment.
"All right."
The nurse smiled warmly.
"I'll only need a few minutes."
She rolled Lily's bed into the hallway.
Lily looked back.
"Will you come too?"
"I'll meet you downstairs."
"I promise."
The elevator doors closed.
Emma watched them disappear.
She had no idea it was the last time she'd see Lily.
Present
Daniel arrived at the hospital at a dead sprint.
Yellow police tape already surrounded the pediatric wing.
Security officers rushed through the corridors.
Doctors argued with investigators.
Emma stood near the nurses' station, her face streaked with tears.
"The nurse..." she whispered.
"I've never seen her before."
Daniel looked toward Security Chief Nolan.
"Cameras."
"We're reviewing them now."
They entered the surveillance room.
A technician froze the footage.
There was Lily.
Smiling weakly.
Being wheeled down the hallway.
The nurse looked completely normal.
Blue scrubs.
Hospital badge.
Disposable mask.
Nothing suspicious.
The elevator doors closed.
The technician switched cameras.
Lobby.
Parking garage.
Emergency entrance.
Nothing.
The bed never appeared again.
Daniel frowned.
"What about the elevator camera?"
The technician swallowed.
"It malfunctioned."
"Only that one?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Exactly three minutes."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Professional.
Very professional.
The technician rewound the hallway footage.
Frame by frame.
Daniel suddenly pointed.
"Stop."
The image froze.
The nurse's ID badge had flipped backward.
Only the clip was visible.
"Zoom."
The picture sharpened.
Attached behind the badge...
A tiny silver pin.
Daniel's expression changed.
He had seen that symbol before.
A black circle.
Inside it...
A white raven.
Not a hospital emblem.
Not a charity logo.
A raven.
He immediately remembered the basement.
Among the hundreds of files...
One notebook had carried the same symbol embossed on its cover.
This wasn't random.
It was a signature.
Meanwhile...
Lily slowly opened her eyes.
Darkness.
The room smelled of fresh paint and antiseptic.
Her wrists weren't tied.
She sat on a small bed.
The walls were gray.
No windows.
Only one metal door.
She climbed down carefully.
Her legs trembled.
But they held.
Someone clapped slowly.
"Excellent."
A man's voice.
Calm.
Educated.
He stepped out from the shadows.
Black gloves.
Gray suit.
No mask.
His face was ordinary.
Forgettable.
The kind of face people never remembered.
He smiled kindly.
"I've been waiting to see you walk."
Lily backed away.
"Who are you?"
He ignored the question.
"Do you know why you're special?"
She shook her head.
"You succeeded."
"I don't understand."
"You broke your conditioning."
The little girl looked confused.
The man crouched until they were eye level.
"Do you know how difficult that is?"
Lily whispered,
"I want Emma."
The man's smile faded.
"I'm afraid that won't be possible."
Back at the hospital...
Dr. Brooks entered carrying Lily's medical chart.
"Daniel."
"I found something."
She handed him several blood test results.
"The sedatives."
"What about them?"
"They weren't ordinary medications."
Daniel looked at the report.
One chemical name had been circled repeatedly.
"I've never heard of it."
"Neither had I."
"I searched every medical database."
"And?"
"It doesn't officially exist."
Silence.
"What do you mean?"
"It was developed for experimental neurological research nearly fifteen years ago."
"Who funded it?"
Dr. Brooks hesitated.
"A private foundation."
"Name?"
She slid over another document.
At the top was a corporate logo.
A white raven inside a black circle.
The same symbol.
Daniel's pulse quickened.
"What foundation is this?"
Dr. Brooks answered quietly.
"The Raven Institute."
"I've never heard of them."
"That's because..."
She looked him straight in the eye.
"...they officially shut down twelve years ago after a research scandal."
Daniel immediately reached for his phone.
"Find every employee."
Dr. Brooks didn't move.
"There aren't any records."
"They disappeared."
Across the city...
Inside the gray room...
The man placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Lily.
Age four.
Standing in a park.
Laughing.
Running.
She stared.
"That's me."
"Yes."
"You remember?"
She nodded slowly.
"I used to play."
"What happened?"
Lily frowned.
"I..."
She couldn't remember.
The man leaned forward.
"No."
"You remember."
"You were taught to forget."
He placed another photograph beside the first.
This one showed four children together.
Lily recognized herself immediately.
But the other three...
She had never seen before.
Or so she thought.
As she looked closer...
Fragments flashed through her mind.
A little boy building blocks.
A girl singing softly.
Someone crying at night.
Someone whispering...
"Pretend to sleep."
Lily's breathing became uneven.
"I know them..."
The man nodded.
"Of course you do."
"They were your family."
She looked up in shock.
"My family?"
"No."
He smiled sadly.
"Your first group."
Before Lily could ask another question...
The steel door opened.
A woman entered wearing a white lab coat.
She looked at the man.
"Sir."
"The investigators have identified the Raven symbol."
He sighed.
"Sooner than expected."
"They've also recovered the hard drives."
Another pause.
"Then Phase Two begins."
"What about Subject Eight?"
The man looked toward Lily.
Then smiled.
"Cancel Subject Eight."
The woman blinked.
"Why?"
"Because..."
He rested a gloved hand gently on Lily's shoulder.
